Early industries, such as the Refinite Mineral Processing Plant at Ardmore, were built to enhance the water; other businesses--bathhouses in Hot Springs and Edgemont, the Michael J. Fitzmaurice Veterans Home (originally named the Soldiers Home), and the VA Black Hills Medical Center (known by longtime residents as the Battle Mountain Sanitarium) in Hot Springs--were established here because naturally warm water and the moderate climate enhanced their missions. Back in the day, small towns had flour mills, creameries, and ice companies, and the towns flourished with each industrial boom. Out in the county, on the government-run experimental farm, crops were tested and people attended agricultural classes and meetings. Oil wells were drilled, sandstone was quarried, and farmers and ranchers worked the land and the cattle. Through the years, county residents have been warm and welcoming, much like the water.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Fall River The history of Fall River presented to the public in this volume is designed to fill a niche that (has long been vacant, inasmuch as no record of the city's growth has been published in nearly thirty years. The aim has been to present a concise and accurate statement of the city's history that will be of value as a work for -reference, as much as for general reading. Isotme matter already familiar to many readers has been incorporated, because of its importance, though in a condensed form, but a considerable proportion is new. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Fall River: With Notices of Freetown and Tiverton Orin Fowler, the eldest son and sixth child of Captain Amos and Rebecca (Dewey) Fowler, was born at Lebanon, Conn., July 29, 1791. His early years were spent in laboring upon his father's farm, though he was engaged for two winters - when he was sixteen and seventeen years old - in teaching a school. He fitted for college under the instruction of his pastor, the Rev. Mr. Ripley, and entered Williams College in the autumn of 1811. At the end of the first term he took his dismission, and after studying again for a while under Mr. Ripley, and also for one term at the Academy at Colchester, he entered the Sophomore class in Yale College in October, 1812. Here he maintained an excellent standing as a scholar, being distinguished in the more solid, rather than in the more graceful branches. A few months previous to his graduation, he accepted the Preceptorship of the Academy at Fairfield, Conn., and held the place - discharging its duties with great fidelity and acceptance - until the autumn of 1816, when he resigned it, that he might devote himself more exclusively to theological studies, - Dr. Humphrey, then minister of Fairfield, afterwards President of Amherst College, taking the direction of them. He was licensed to preach on the 14th of October, 1817, by the Association of the Western District of Fairfield County. Having preached occasionally in different places, chiefly in Fairfield County, but without any reference to settlement, he decided in March, 1818, to go on a mission to the Western country.
