This book was released on 2021-04-19 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith, sure you can define it, but do you really know what it is? Moreover, what has your faith done for you lately? The Bible teaches that, without faith, it is impossible to please God; and rooted in the heart of every Christian is the desire to please God, yet many Christians struggle to put faith to work in their daily lives. The author dissects faith using a secular, legalistic slant and presents a unique perspective on the merits of the Christian version of the doctrine. Using the art of storytelling, some of which are fictional, others true, many of the dimensions of faith are bought to life. Faith is given transactional value and is treated as the cornerstone on which the entire Christian faith is built. Light on theology but heavy on practical, digestible messages, you can't avoid having the "I never thought of it that way" moments. It's funny too, which is not expected in a book that tackles the seriousness of theologically debatable topics. The stories are refreshing and relatable and capture the imagination as you read. The book guides, instructs, and has a conversational dimension that keeps you engaged.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many commentators, regulatory agencies and politicians have blamed the risky behaviour of both financial institutions and their actors for the collapse of the United States sub-prime mortgage market which in turn precipitated the global 'Credit Crunch'. This edited volume explores how financial crime played a significant role in the global economic crisis. The volume features contributions from internationally renowned academic and practitioner experts in the field who pinpoint some of the most important facets of financial crime which have emerged over recent years. Key subjects include: the possibility of criminalising reckless risk-taking on the financial markets; the duty of banks to prevent money-laundering and corruption; the growth of the Shadow Banking System; and the manipulation of LIBOR by banks. The book illustrates the global nature of financial crime, and highlights the complex relationships between regulatory bodies, law enforcement agencies and private actors in the attempt to limit the harmful effect of white collar crime on the stability of the financial sector. This book will be of great use and interest to scholars, practitioners and students within the field of financial crime, banking and finance law, and international political economy.

Some claim direct links to indigenous spiritual practices; others have appropriated externally introduced religions, modifying these with indigenous perspectives and practices. The voices of Black people from around the world are presented in essays ranging from the Indian subcontinent, Japan and Australia to Africa, the UK and the USA. From creation narratives to trickster heroes, from the role of spirituality in HIV positive South Africa to its place in mental health and among the poor, spirituality is shown to be essential to the survival of individuals and communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, the kingdom of God has remained one of the dominant and most important themes in theology and biblical studies. The kingdom of God is no passive, abstract construct, or static movement. God’s rule and reign stretch to the farthest bounds of the earth—reaching and encompassing humankind wherever they may be found and bringing them under the lordship of Christ. It is this aggressive march of the kingdom that inspired the title of this book. While engaging a readership of persons with interests and differing levels of formal academic training, Kingdom Advancing targets theological students, local pastors, and laypersons who wish to broaden and deepen their biblical and theological understanding of God’s rule in the world. To that end the writing and contents are neither pedantic nor elementary but are pitched at an accessible wavelength and frequency. The reader will find the contents to be theologically and biblically balanced.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new understanding of the post World War II era, showing what occurred when the British Empire wouldn’t step aside for the rising American superpower—with global insights for today. An enduring myth of the twentieth century is that the United States rapidly became a superpower in the years after World War II, when the British Empire—the greatest in history—was too wounded to maintain a global presence. In fact, Derek Leebaert argues in Grand Improvisation, the idea that a traditionally insular United States suddenly transformed itself into the leader of the free world is illusory, as is the notion that the British colossus was compelled to retreat. The United States and the U.K. had a dozen abrasive years until Washington issued a “declaration of independence” from British influence. Only then did America explicitly assume leadership of the world order just taking shape. Leebaert’s character-driven narrative shows such figures as Churchill, Truman, Eisenhower, and Kennan in an entirely new light, while unveiling players of at least equal weight on pivotal events. Little unfolded as historians believe: the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan; the Korean War; America’s descent into Vietnam. Instead, we see nonstop U.S. improvisation until America finally lost all caution and embraced obligations worldwide, a burden we bear today. Understanding all of this properly is vital to understanding the rise and fall of superpowers, why we’re now skeptical of commitments overseas, how the Middle East plunged into disorder, why Europe is fracturing, what China intends—and the ongoing perils to the U.S. world role.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old Faith and the Russian Land is a historical ethnography that charts the ebbs and flows of ethical practice in a small Russian town over three centuries. The town of Sepych was settled in the late seventeenth century by religious dissenters who fled to the forests of the Urals to escape a world they believed to be in the clutches of the Antichrist. Factions of Old Believers, as these dissenters later came to be known, have maintained a presence in the town ever since. The townspeople of Sepych have also been serfs, free peasants, collective farmers, and, now, shareholders in a post-Soviet cooperative. Douglas Rogers traces connections between the town and some of the major transformations of Russian history, showing how townspeople have responded to a long series of attempts to change them and their communities: tsarist-era efforts to regulate family life and stamp out Old Belief on the Stroganov estates, Soviet collectivization drives and antireligious campaigns, and the marketization, religious revival, and ongoing political transformations of post-Soviet times. Drawing on long-term ethnographic fieldwork and extensive archival and manuscript sources, Rogers argues that religious, political, and economic practice are overlapping arenas in which the people of Sepych have striven to be ethical-in relation to labor and money, food and drink, prayers and rituals, religious books and manuscripts, and the surrounding material landscape. He tracks the ways in which ethical sensibilities-about work and prayer, hierarchy and inequality, gender and generation-have shifted and recombined over time. Rogers concludes that certain expectations about how to be an ethical person have continued to orient townspeople in Sepych over the course of nearly three centuries for specific, identifiable, and often unexpected reasons. Throughout, he demonstrates what a historical and ethnographic study of ethics might look like and uses this approach to ask new questions of Russian, Soviet, and post-Soviet history.

In The Power of Kingdom Faith, Dr. Myles Munroe strips away the common errors and misconceptions surrounding faith to reveal the nature, character, and power of true faith, or, Kingdom faith. Kingdom faith trusts not in the promises of God but in the God who promises; seeks not the blessings of God, but the God who blesses. Kingdom faith will always be tested, but because it places its trust in the King of the universe, will always prevail under testing. Kingdom faith, therefore is a triumphant faith that will overcome the world.

Book excerpt: The material here was originally intended as a third section in Smiths previous offering, The Problem of God, but took on a life of its own to become a separate work. The Problem of Faith is thus a sequel to the former work and deals with those questions with which all thinking believers wrestle: the nature of religious language, evil and the God of love, the concept of miracles and of prayer, the relationship between faith and reason, life after death, and the problem of hell. The aim is to encourage the reader to engage afresh with these essential issues.

Book excerpt: In this volume André Barbera considers the question of faith, how an individual may act faithfully, and what good (if any) is faithful action. Drawing on the letters of the Apostle Paul and the work of philosophical thinkers such as Søren Kierkegaard, Barbera explores numerous aspects of faithful living, from religion, original sin, and tests of faith, to the power of prayer, and even the concept of atheism. In particular, Barbera formulates a postulate drawn from Augustine's Confessions: God is not bound by time. The person of faith, however, is enslaved by time. Augustine's expression “faith seeking understanding” stakes the claim,” but the mode of faith and the end of faith are inherently contradictory. The faithful person waits in pursuit, choking. Works, the anxiety of faith, ensue. Barbera concludes that the person of faith engages in endless trial, struggle, and contradiction, but in so doing attempts to produce a meaningful life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mankind stands at a most critical time. A deserted bell rings over a deserted field. It is a hollow sound, eerie, almost foreboding. It is the bell that one hears in the wake of death or at that moment of impending doom and danger. It is the toll that brings a chill to one’s bones. For when that forlorn watchman on a fortress wall hears that bell through misty currents, it is like a death grip unto the soul. The bell echoes the alarming truth that mankind has lost its true faith. A faith buried, tortured and left in the dungeon. We need to return to the Lord Jesus, His Ways, His Kingdom, His Life and Light as the world slips deeper into moral depravity and self-destruction. These are days of apostasy and heresy where the Truth of the Lord has been discarded and trampled upon, yet His Truth shall forever stand as a bastion - calling us home and providing refuge and shelter to those who believe, who hope and who trust in the Lord.

We’ve seen a pandemic, systemic racism and violence, resurgent nationalism and tribalism, polarization and mutual suspicion, insurrection, environmental peril due to climate change, and on. We can feel helpless. But these threats give impetus for reflection on what faith has to say in any time of challenge. Where do we turn in real need? What makes a difference? What do we really believe? Can we speak in Christ’s name against dishonesty, cruelty, and neglect of the most needy and vulnerable in times of crisis? The recent pandemic and other horrors provide the catalyst for theology that lives today and in the future, in fearful times and whatever comes next. As Christians, as people of faith, how do we find God alive in us and present in our turmoil? And how do we share that hope with others? How can Christian faith help us bring the best out of the worst? Can we rediscover our faith, our church, our lives in these times of crisis? This volume presents a variety of perspectives and answers for questions of fearful times and living faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there is no shortage of recent books arguing against religion, few offer a positive alternative—how anyone might live a fulfilling life without the support of religious beliefs. This enlightening book fills the gap. Philip Kitcher constructs an original and persuasive secular perspective, one that answers human needs, recognizes the objectivity of values, and provides for the universal desire for meaningfulness. Kitcher thoughtfully and sensitively considers how secularism can respond to the worries and challenges that all people confront, including the issue of mortality. He investigates how secular lives compare with those of people who adopt religious doctrines as literal truth, as well as those who embrace less literalistic versions of religion. Whereas religious belief has been important in past times, Kitcher concludes that evolution away from religion is now essential. He envisions the successors to religious life, when the senses of identity and community traditionally fostered by religion will instead draw on a broader range of cultural items—those provided by poets, filmmakers, musicians, artists, scientists, and others. With clarity and deep insight, Kitcher reveals the power of secular humanism to encourage fulfilling human lives built on ethical truth.
