Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concern of this book is the nature of religious belief and the ways in which philosophical enquiry is related to it. Six chapters present the positive arguments the author wishes to put forward to discusses religion and rationality, scepticism about religion, language-games, belief and the loss of belief. The remaining chapters include criticisms of some contemporary philosophers of religion in the light of the earlier discussions, and the implications for more specific topics, such as religious education, are investigated. The book ends with a general attempt to say something about the character of philosophical enquiry, and to show how important it is to realise this character in the philosophy of religion.

Book Synopsis Mystical Experience of God by : Jerome Gellman
Download or read book Mystical Experience of God written by Jerome Gellman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001: Engaging contemporary discussion concerning the validity of mystical experiences of God, Jerome Gellman presents the best evidential case in favor of validity and its implications for belief in God. Gellman vigorously defends the coherence of the concept of a mystical experience of God against philosophical objections, and evaluates attempts to provide alternative explanations from sociology and neuropsychology. He then carefully examines feminist objections to male philosophers' treatments of mystical experience of God and to the traditional hierarchal concept of God. Gellman finds none of the objections decisive, and concludes that while the initial evidential case is not rationally compelling for some, it can be rationally compelling for others. Offering important new perspectives on the evidential value of experiences of God, and the concept of God more broadly, this book will appeal to a wide range of readers including those with an interest in philosophy of religion, religious studies, mysticism and epistemology.

Book Synopsis Grammars of Faith by : P. F. Bloemendaal
Download or read book Grammars of Faith written by P. F. Bloemendaal and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: D. Z. Phillips is a leading figure in advocating a Wittgensteinian approach to the philosophical study of religion. His writings exert an important influence on contemporary philosophy of religion, giving a new direction to the philosophical discussion of religious belief and practice. Although his work has prompted much - often critical - comment, a thorough investigation has not been forthcoming. Grammars of Faith fills that gap. The book pays close attention to Wittgenstein's own remarks on religious belief, arranging them against the background of his broader philosophical methodology, as well as to the efforts of the early Wittgensteinians at providing a more comprehensive Wittgensteinian philosophy of religion. Central to this study are Phillips's understanding of philosophical enquiry as a form of contemplation, and his descriptive accounts of religious belief. By means of a careful and methodical examination of Phillips's oeuvre, the study seeks to present a fair assessment of Phillips's position, showing not only its weaknesses, but also its strength.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of original essays deals with the meaning and truth of religious language. The background of the discussion is found in the linguistic analysis of Wittgenstein and others, for whom, as a form of life, language is seen as an organic part of the life of a human group. But the language of a people is characterized by an internal heterogeneity of "language-games" of different discourses- scientific, moral, religious- each having its own rules of what can be meaningfully said.
Book Synopsis The Philosophy of Faith by : Bertram Brewster
Download or read book The Philosophy of Faith written by Bertram Brewster and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-06-22 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the titles of Truth, Virtue, Freedom, Optimism, Beauty and Highest Good, Mr. Brewster discusses in pleasing style and from a spiritualistic standpoint some of the vital problems of religion and ethics. His book is a series of sketches on philosophical themes rather than an attempt to develop a philosophical system. He emphasizes the voluntary element in knowledge, and holds that for some opinions at any rate, such as those with which religion is concerned, "there is a practical and momentous alternative for everyone." While Mr. Brewster's voluntarism and his philosophy of faith would seem more congenial with indeterminism, it is interesting to notice that in his discussion of freedom he defends the deterministic position. The old analogy of the composition of forces is resorted to, and thus "the encumbrance of an incredible and compromising dogma," that of indeterminism, is removed. Some reservations are made at the end of the chapter; in fact, the doctrine that volition is determined by the strongest motive seems to be given up when it is said that "the weaker motive may often in this way, by being taken at the flood, become the stronger one at the critical moment. ... If the wish be present, even though relatively feeble, means may be found to make it prevail." David can still slay the giant with his sling, before the latter closes upon him. If Mr. Brewster is chargeable with inconsistency in his treatment of freedom, he is at least not the only writer on this subject against whom the accusation may be made. Especially interesting is the chapter on Beauty, in which the author contends that no naturalistic explanation of beauty can be adequate. Beauty is "an effluence we know not whence unless it comes from the soul of the universe." Beauty is "the promise of God impressed upon his works," and for the man of faith "the universe exists mainly for beauty and for love." -The Princeton Theological Review, Volume 14 [1916]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existentialism asks some of the most fundamental questions about human existence: What gives our lives meaning and value? What is it to choose freely? How do I live an authentic life? How should I relate to myself and to others? In this book Joel Smith introduces and assesses the arguments and controversies surrounding these questions in an engaging way, providing a superb introduction to this important and perennial philosophical subject. Connecting existentialist themes with contemporary questions in ethics, philosophy of action, and the emotions, he brings existentialism to life. He does so by focusing on a set of distinctively existentialist questions and themes, including race and gender, whilst at the same time engaging with the classic existentialist texts from Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Sartre, de Beauvoir, Fanon and others. The book is organised clearly around the following key topics: Life Subjectivity Meaning Freedom Angst Bad Faith Alienation Gender Race Authenticity Including chapter summaries and annotated further reading, Existentialism: A Philosophical Inquiry is the ideal starting point for anyone interested in this fascinating and important subject, in Philosophy as well as related disciplines such as Literature and Religion.
