Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christ of the Creation Days by Greg Girard I have long been fascinated by the great types of Scripture: not clever connections invented by over ingenious preachers, but the patterns that underlie the way God repeatedly works both in the people and the events of the Bible. Some of them are quite explicit. Others you dont see till they are pointed out to you, and then you wonder how you could have missed them. The more we see one part of Scripture underlining another, in what I think of as the repeat of patterns, the greater its integrity is seen to be, and the clearer its message. Greg Girard opens our eyes to a set of correspondences that could not be more basic to the biblical revelation of God. Should it surprise us that the sequence of his creative action in the making of the world should be the same shape as the sequence of his redemptive action in revealing himself to his people? Yet I for one had never made the connection. The creation of light, the separation of land and sea, the stars of heaven, the man appointed to rule all that lives-of course these images reappear elsewhere; but had you noticed where, and at what crucial points in the Bible story? The author deserves our thanks for this illuminating and inspiring study. Michael Wilcock [author of five titles in the Bible Speaks Today series (InterVarsity Press), and other books of Bible exposition]

Drama-free. Music-free. It’s everything she thought she wanted. So why does it feel so empty? She told herself she’d never go back. Not to music. Not to Los Angeles. Not to him. But when outside forces compel her to fulfill her contractual obligations, Felicity will once again find herself facing the life she thought she’d left behind for good… as well as the man who broke her heart into pieces… They say lightning never strikes twice… But what if your love is a perfect storm? FADED: Part Two is the second installment of an angsty, addictive new contemporary romance duet about two star-crossed musicians. From dark tour bus bunk beds to blinding stadium lights, follow Ryder, Felicity, and the whole Wildwood crew as they set the world on fire… one arena at a time. Due to sex, drugs, and rock & roll, it is recommended for readers ages 16 and up.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one can doubt that the Bible has exerted a tremendous influence on Western civilization since the dawn of Christianity. But few of us have considered the precise nature of that influence in particular historical contexts. In this book, David Kling traces the fascinating story of how specific biblical texts have at different times emerged to be the inspiration of movements that have changed the course of history. By examining eight such pivotal texts, Kling elucidates the ways in which sacred texts continue to shape our lives as well as our history. Among the passages he discusses are: * "Upon this rock I will build my church" (Matthew 16:18), which inspired the formation of the papacy and has served as its foundation for centuries * "The righteous will live by faith" (Romans 1:17), which caught the imagination of Martin Luther and sparked the Protestant Reformation * "Go to Pharaoh and say to him, 'Thus says the Lord: Let my people go, so that they may worship me'" (Exodus 8:1), which has played an important and diverse role in African American history from early slave spirituals through the modern civil rights movement and beyond * "There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus" (Galatians 3:28), which has been adopted by feminists as a rallying cry in the battle for women's ordination Each of the historical episodes he explores--from the beginning of Christian monasticism to the emergence of Pentecostalism--is evidence of the dynamic interplay between Scripture and the social and cultural context in which it is interpreted. Kling's innovative study of this process shows how sacred texts can give life to social movements, and how powerful social forces can give new meaning to Scripture.

Book Synopsis History of Modern Architecture by : Leonardo Benevolo

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A serious and original study of the beginnings and development of modernism in which the pictorial aspects are designed to aid in the communication of the author's closely reasoned formulations. Let it be said at once that the format of this work is richly handsome: it is a two-volume boxed set comprising 844 pages and well over 1,000 high-quality illustrations, and it reflects throughout its publisher's conviction that good design is an essential, not superficial, part of bookmaking. Beyond that, it should be emphasized that this work is not another facile cultural tour of modern architecture. It is a serious and original study of the beginnings and development of modernism in which the pictorial aspects are designed to aid in the communication of the author's closely reasoned formulations, rather than to gloss over a lack of substantive content. The book is a translation of the third Italian edition, published in 1966. Benevolo, who is on the faculty of architecture in Venice, has earned an international reputation as a historian of architecture and town planning, and his publications embrace the span of time from the Renaissance to the foreseeable future. One such publication, The Origins of Modern Town Planning (The MIT Press, 1967), may be read as a prelude to the present work as well as an independent contribution. Perhaps more than any other architectural historian in our time, Benevolo has made a determined effort to place developments in design and planning in their proper social and political settings. Indeed, the author argues that the development of the modern movement in architecture was determined, not by aesthetic formalisms, but largely by the social changes that have occurred since about 1760: "After the middle of the eighteenth century, without the continuity of formal activity being in any way broken, indeed while architectural language seems to be acquiring a particular coherence, the relations between architect and society began to change radically.... New material and spiritual needs, new ideas and modes of procedure arise both within and beyond the traditional limits, and finally they run together to form a new architectural synthesis that is completely different from the old one. In this way it is possible to explain the birth of modern architecture, which otherwise would seem completely incomprehensible...." This second volume is concerned with the modern movement proper, from 1914 to 1966. The author emphasizes the unity of the movement, rejecting the usual treatment that allots to the individual architects separate and unconnected biographical accounts.Benevolo remarks at one point, "When one talks about modern architecture one must bear in mind the fact that it implies not only a new range of forms, but also a new way of thinking, whose consequences have not yet all been calculated." His main concern is to provide a more exact calculation of those consequences.
