Book excerpt: Excerpt from Facts and Opinions: Touching the Real Origin, Character American Influence of the American Colonization Society: Views of Wilberforce, Clarkson and Others, and Opinions of the Free People of Color of the United States Here we have no idle professions of sympathy for the free blacks, subjected by our own prejudices and cruelty to poverty, ignorance, and degradation, - no visionary, but benevolent predictions of their regeneration, on being transferred from a land of Bibles and churches to the darkness and heathenism of Africa, - no sickly, puerile sentimentality about the diffusion Of the arts and sciences and the light of Christianity throughout a benighted con tinent, by sending to it a horde of miserable wretches. Book excerpt: Against Wind and Tide tells the story of African American's battle against the American Colonization Society (ACS), founded in 1816 with the intention to return free blacks to its colony Liberia. Although ACS members considered free black colonization in Africa a benevolent enterprise, most black leaders rejected the ACS, fearing that the organization sought forced removal. As Ousmane K. Power-Greene's story shows, these African American anticolonizationists did not believe Liberia would ever be a true "black American homeland." In this study of anticolonization agitation, Power-Greene draws on newspapers, meeting minutes, and letters to explore the concerted effort on the part of nineteenth century black activists, community leaders, and spokespersons to challenge the American Colonization Society's attempt to make colonization of free blacks federal policy. The ACS insisted the plan embodied empowerment. The United States, they argued, would never accept free blacks as citizens, and the only solution to the status of free blacks was to create an autonomous nation that would fundamentally reject racism at its core. But the activists and reformers on the opposite side believed that the colonization movement was itself deeply racist and in fact one of the greatest obstacles for African Americans to gain citizenship in the United States. Power-Greene synthesizes debates about colonization and emigration, situating this complex and enduring issue into an ever broader conversation about nation building and identity formation in the Atlantic world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume devoted to interrogating the complex relationship -- both historic and contemporary -- between the United States and West Africa. Over the last several decades, historians have conducted extensive research into contact between the United States and West Africa during the era of the transatlantic trade. Yet we still understand relatively little about more recent relations between the two areas. This multidisciplinary volume presents the most comprehensive analysis of the U.S.-West African relationship to date, filling a significant gap in the literature by examining the social, cultural, political, and economic bonds that have, in recent years, drawn these two world regions into increasingly closer contact. Beginning with examinations of factors that linked the nations during European colonial ruleof Africa, and spanning to discussions of U.S. foreign policy with regard to West Africa from the Cold War through the end of the twentieth century and beyond, these essays constitute the first volume devoted to interrogating thecomplex relationship -- both historic and contemporary -- between the United States and West Africa. This book was released on 2014-07-31 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blacks fought with whites in the American War for Independence against England. In fact, without the aid of these black soldiers, one wonders if the Americans would have won the war. These blacks were never considered equal to whites but a great number died for a country that looked upon them as being inferior and unworthy of total freedom. After the American War for Independence, many whites in the North felt guilty about holding slaves. A vast number of blacks were freed as a humane gesture. Blacks were also freed because slavery as an economic institution in the North was dead and industrialization was steadily taking its place. These blacks were semi-free because they did not really enjoy the same rights or privileges as whites did.
