Book excerpt: Talladega, Alabama, best known for its popular speedway, is also a town of enchanting old homes, historic institutions, and fascinating people. In this pictorial review, the reader travels over diverse paths-from winding Indian trails to the fastest racetrack on earth-into the rich and colorful heritage of a landmark Southern community. Talladega: Pathways to the Past invites both longtime residents and newcomers alike to watch a Native American ballgame, experience an Indian battle, peer into Old South plantation life, step into a notorious saloon, behold a feast at a world-famous hotel, and thrill at the speed of race cars. The rambler views quaint nineteenth-century storefronts, sees the state's oldest courthouse still in use, strolls through the historic Silk Stocking District, discovers the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind, greets youngsters at the Presbyterian Home for Children, tours one of the nation's oldest historically black colleges, and relaxes at Shocco Springs. Vintage photographs within these pages bring truly extraordinary people to life, including the "Father of Radio," the only Alabama nurse to give her life during World War I, a noted author of popular plantation tales, a world-renowned sculptor, the founder of one of the nation's largest tourist agencies, and the first Alabamian inducted in Statuary Hall in the National Capitol. Perhaps more importantly, this volume showcases everyday folks doing everyday things, thus preserving numerous slices of daily life in small-town Alabama.

Book excerpt: An early history of Talladega College In 1954 when the U.S. Supreme Court declared separate education inherently unequal, Talladega College was a notable black liberal arts school thriving in rural east Alabama. This is a study of that college, its growth, development, and significance, from its inception by freed slaves in the 1860s through the student protest movement more than a century later. Initially Talladega offered primary, secondary, nursing, and theological as well as college-level work. Under strong leadership of visionaries such as James T. Cater, the school's first black dean, Talladega became a first-rate liberal arts institution. During its first decades the school struggled against poverty, white hostility, Ku Klux Klan threats, and internal dissension to produce a number of teachers and ministers for Alabama schools and churches. This book examines such college issues as finance, enrollment, students, educational policy, and the often stormy relationship with black and white neighbors. It provides a sense of both the obstacles to and the positive consequences of building and nurturing a black college.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally named Alabama International Motor Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway was built on the site of a World War II-era Air Force base in the heart of Alabama. NASCAR founder Bill France and his family envisioned a race track that would be faster, larger, and more exciting than any track built to date. Construction began on May 23, 1968, and was completed on September 13, 1969. The end result is the most modern speedway ever built. Often simply referred to as "Dega," the track is 2.66 miles long, its high-banked turns are nearly three stories tall, and race cars have reached speeds over 200 miles per hour. It is so popular that it is said to become one of the largest "temporary" cities in the state every race weekend.

Book excerpt: For nearly 70 years, NASCAR has been the premier sanctioning body for organized Stock Car Racing in the United States. During that time, the sport has grown from a Southern, regional series to a global brand with its races telecast in more than 100 countries around the world.

Author John Close details the earliest races of the 20th Century that laid the groundwork for the formation of NASCAR through today's modern events at mega-race stadiums across the country. Presented in an easy-to-read decade-by-decade "Fact Format," this books allows you to spend a couple of minutes or hours at a time learning about the Cars (and Trucks), Personalities, Tracks, and Milestones of NASCAR, America's most popular and attended form of motorsports. Close, a longtime NASCAR journalist, author, team member, and race-day Spotter, also includes dozens of rare and informative photos that take you from the famed "Beach Course" at Daytona to the high banks of today's NASCAR tracks. A must read for any NASCAR, Stock Car Racing, and American Motorsports fan, the book will provide hours of interesting entertainment as it uncovers rare information and statistical anomalies. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Arial}
