Book excerpt: The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to investigate the factors that contribute to the retention of urban, Hispanic high school male graduates in East Harlem, New York. Originated through the works by W. E. B. Du Bois (1968), Gloria Ladson-Billings (1998) and Derrick Bell (1992) pioneered Critical Race Theory (CRT), which reported that the United States Education system has historically failed to adequately provide access to all students. Hispanics continue to have the lowest rates of high school and college degree attainment. This study’s purpose was to address the phenomenon of low retention rates of urban, Hispanic males by identifying influences on the participants’ abilities to overcome family and non-family risk factors. For the purpose of this study, 10 participants were bounded by their socioeconomic status (SES), ethnicity, age, gender, residential address (residents of East Harlem, New York), and successful completion of high school. The following research questions guided the study: What factors do Hispanic adult male graduates indicate contributed to their successful completion of high school? How do Hispanic adult male graduates perceive the personal characteristics that helped them overcome their challenges to high school completion? How did relationships with teachers, families, churches and coaches assist Hispanic adult male graduates in achieving their goals? Data collection consisted of informal, semi-structured, audio-recorded individual interviews, a focus group, and document analysis. Through the voices of the participants, relationships, effective support structures and social-emotional support emerged as themes. The results of this study will potentially assist policymakers and educators in identifying the urgency of providing systemic reform to increase achievement of Hispanic males.

Book excerpt: Hispanic high school students have a dropout rate that ranges from 35 percent to 55 percent depending on what type of report you may be referencing. Add rates for all high school students. Hispanic youth endure the challenges of language barriers, single parent households, working to help their family, or fighting off gang involvement in their communities to graduate from high school. The purpose of this case study is to address the urban Hispanic dropout problem through an examination of strategies perceived as successful by Hispanic graduates. In order to narrow the scope, the researcher focused on the strategies suggested by the National Dropout Prevention Center. The researcher posed two questions: 1.) To what extent did students perceive that these fifteen identified strategies influenced their decision to remain in school and graduate? and 2.) What other positive influences beyond the identified strategies were credited by at-risk students and staff as contributing factors to their graduation? The study examined eight former Hispanic high school students who successfully completed high school and four of their teachers. The strategies that this study group perceived as most effective are discussed and policy implications are described. The findings stated students did not find a single path that lead to graduation, although the three highest ranked strategies were community collaboration, alternative schooling, and active learning. The conclusions one can make is that family involvement and school partnerships are very important to the outcome of Hispanic high school students̓ graduation success. Hispanics are projected to account for approximately 20% of the U.S. population by 2020 (Sorensen, Brewer, Carroll, and Bryton, 1995). Nearly 40% of this population will be under the age of 19, compared with 29% for the total U.S. population. "Hispanic youth represents the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population, and Hispanics now account for more than a quarter of all new entrants into the labor force" (Sorensen, Brewer, Carroll, and Bryton, 1995, p. 1). This influx of young Hispanic population brings with it many new challenges in education and in the work force. Education is often seen as a catalyst for success in the work place; however, Hispanics' educational success has not kept pace with their increasing population, and they are especially struggling to complete higher education. "Young Hispanic undergraduates are half as likely as their white peers on campus to finish a bachelor's degree, a disparity at least as large as the disparity in finishing high school" (Fry, 2005, p. i). So prevalent is this problem that the Clinton and Bush Administrations both declared the group's improvement of college graduation rates a national priority (Santiago & Brown, 2004). The increasing number of Hispanics only exacerbates their educational problems/difficulties, not to mention the number increasingly impacts the workforce. Cultural and social differences are hypothesized as one reason for the high attrition rate of Hispanic students in secondary and post-secondary education. Hispanics often have strong family ties and work ethic. Their perception of family roles and obligations often propels them into the work force at ages younger than their white counterparts. Ultimately, this role in the work force often prevents them from pursuing education. Many others struggle with high school and have limited adult role models to encourage their educational efforts; this struggle is only worsened in higher education (Fry, 2004). In summation, students with a lack of education often face a lack of opportunity. A lack of education among a particular racial group can have even greater implications, as it can lead to pre-conceived expectations and stereotyping that can inhibit success. Martinez, DeGarmo, & Eddy (2004) state: School success is among the most important correlates of overall physical, mental, and social well-being. In fact, academic functioning is known to be highly related to a host of other important outcomes for youths including substance use, delinquency, and associations with deviant peers...Students who drop out from school experience lower income, greater unemployment, are significantly overrepresented in the adult corrections population, and more likely to require social services during their lifetimes compared to high school graduates. (pp. 128- 129) The purpose of this study is to determine whether social and family factors influence Hispanic students' successful completion of a higher education business program and entry into the workforce. The study examined a longitudinal data set provided by a nationally recognized research institute. Results demonstrated that several social factors are significant in predicting which students persisted in the study of business. Freshmen that readily embraced socializing in the college setting were more likely to persist, and the importance they placed on developing relationships throughout their college career was significant to their persistence of education in this area. As such, the study implies that in order to assist Hispanics to persist in business higher education, educators and institutions should recognize the importance that social relationships have to this set of students. More emphasis should be given to help them embrace the college experience and to help them cultivate and maintain relationships among their peers.

Book excerpt: This single-site case study examined the issues associated with the attrition of Mexican and Puerto Rican male students from an urban school district located in Pennsylvania. The study analyzed the responses of 20 student participants, 6 parents, and 7 school personnel. Student participants consisted of students currently enrolled in high school, students who had dropped out of high school but were now enrolled in a GED program, and students who had dropped out of high school and had not enrolled in any type of educational program. Data was gathered through the use of a questionnaire in which participants indicated reasons why students stay in school. Participants also attended individual or group interviews elaborating upon reasons students stay in school and reasons students leave school. Comparison of information obtained from students, parents, and school personnel was analyzed to determine level of congruency. Questionnaire and interview results indicated the research participants agreeing the most important factor in keeping Hispanic male students in school is parental influence. Students also indicated plans for the future and academic success as reasons that keep Hispanic males in school, while employment factors, academic problems, and negative attitudes cause them to leave school. Parents agreed that plans for the future kept students in school, however, they indicated illegal activities and inadequate parental support led to students dropping out of school. School personnel felt the social aspect of school along with academic goals encouraged students to stay in school, while the maturity level of the student, inadequate parental support, cultural differences, and student hopelessness contributed to Hispanic males leaving school.

I examine the academic aspirations, career aspirations, the influence of peers, teachers, and parents of seventh-, eighth-, ninth-, and tenth-grade urban Hispanic adolescents, and gender roles in college and career aspirations through the lens of Bronfenbrenner's ecological subsystems theory. Participants took the Student Career Assessment (SCA) survey consisting of Likert-type multiple choice questions and open-ended questions to assess their college and career aspirations. Quantitatively analyzed data examined the extent urban Hispanic middle school and high school adolescents were influenced by items on scales of encouragement, literacy, and education and whether there were differences by gender and grade level. Student responses as to why they chose a specific career were analyzed qualitatively. Combined results for urban Hispanic middle school and high school adolescents show a) both genders are interested in finishing high school and going to college, b) Hispanic females are encouraged more than males to pursue their college and career aspirations, c) more females than males know their career aspiration, but the majority of students do not know how to prepare for their chosen career, e) females have more confidence in their literacy skills than males. The more confidence Hispanic high school students have in their literacy skills, the more likely they are to graduate from high school. Implications for future research should involve conducting studies in the areas of college and career aspirations of urban Hispanic adolescents using random sampling. More gender studies involving the college and career aspirations of urban Hispanic adolescents would significantly add to the current body of knowledge.

This qualitative research was also aimed at establishing and understanding how a selected number of Mexican American males have achieved academic success. The researcher chose 10 men with either an associate of arts or an associate of science degrees for an in-depth interview and used a semi-structured interview guide in an effort to prompt oral discourse. The interviewer posed questions concerning academic conditions, family impact, college environment, and financial issues. The responses to the questions led to similar themes involved in these students' course completion and graduation. The researcher used a theoretical framework using Bandura's Social Learning Theory (1977) in which he suggests that not only environmental factors, but motivational factors along with self-regulatory mechanisms affect an individual's behavior. This research illustrated the conditions that facilitated reaching the participant's educational goal and mission, which was to complete a two-year degree at the community college. The inquiry examined the behavioral patterns that have been an influence on the educational decisions of these Mexican American males, and what social conditions have motivated them to seek and achieve higher education despite adversity.

Predictor variables investigated were: age, home language, retention history, SES, program of studies, suspensions, and GPA. Data were from a large urban school district in the state of Florida. A sample of 865 Hispanic/Latino male Latino students in the 8th grade in 1995-96 was followed longitudinally every year to the year 2000-01. Survival analysis and logistic regression were used to examine the data. The research questions were: 1) What is the relation between age, home language, retention history, SES, program of studies, suspensions, and GPA and dropping out of middle and secondary school by Hispanic/Latino males? 2) At what grade levels do the predictor variables begin to affect the male Hispanic/ Latino students' propensity for early school leaving? When are they at greatest risk? Of the predictor variables included in this research, age, retention history, program of studies, suspension, and GPA, were found to be statistically significant in the students' decision to drop out of school. This research also found that approximately 31% of this Hispanic/Latino male sample dropped out prior to completing their high school education during the 5-year span. Investigating the most hazardous time for dropping out of school, results suggested that for these students it is well into their secondary education, very close to when they would actually graduate, during their junior to senior years. It may be the time close to their eighteenth birthday that lets them legally choose to leave school that triggers this hazardous time period.

Book excerpt: Census data and research studies have shown that the Hispanic population in the United States and in the state of Texas is the subpopulation whose workforce is the least educated, has the highest high school dropout rates, has the highest number of individuals and households living in poverty, and is projected to be the largest subpopulation (in the U.S. and TX) by 2050 (Finn & Sousa, 2014; Kelly, 2005; Murdock, 2014; National Center for Education Statistics, 2012b; National Center for Education Statistics, 2014; Noguera, 2008). By closing the achievement gap between White and Hispanic high school students and improving the high school graduation rate of the Hispanic population, Hispanics will be placed in a position of acquiring better employment, improving their income, and possibly moving out of poverty status. The purpose of this qualitative research study was to analyze data from Hispanic students about their perceptions of classroom instructional strategies and factors outside of the classroom that enabled or prevented them from being successful in each of their core subject courses (chemistry, geometry, English II, world history) during their sophomore year in a Texas urban high school. Two focus groups were formed: one group which proved to be successful in their chemistry course and a second group of students who failed the course. The data gathered were analyzed using first and second cycle qualitative coding methods and organized on tables to determine the frequency in which specific instructional strategies were mentioned and identified as being an effective or ineffective strategy in learning for each of the two focus groups. Data concerning any perceived outside factors affecting the participants’ success in the core subject courses were also gathered, analyzed, and organized on tables. The data gathered from each focus group were then compared to each other in order to determine similarities and differences in the frequency of effective and ineffective teaching strategies mentioned. Data concerning possible outside factors that influenced passing or failing the core subjects were also identified and compared, in order to ascertain potential trends within each focus group and between the two focus groups. The data obtained from this study support research stressing the importance of the availability of professional development for teachers in order to improve instructional techniques and manage classroom behavior. The results further revealed concerns about student preference for direct instruction which limits student exposure to instructional strategies that would ultimately develop the 21st century skills needed to compete in today’s job market. This further emphasizes the need for campus leaders to develop, monitor, and support teachers in an effort to successfully implement best instructional strategies in all classes. The study does not support the need for teachers to incorporate information related to the history and culture of Hispanic students into classroom lessons in order for them to better relate to the material being taught and improve their performance in their courses; the findings support a need for teachers and campus leaders to become knowledgeable of Hispanic cultures in order to provide Hispanic students with the motivation, academic guidance, and emotional support needed to ensure their academic success. Finally, analyses of data within and between both focus groups revealed that the instructional strategies used by the teachers in the four core subjects neither helped nor hindered student performance in any of the four core subjects.
