Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Future of Nursing explores how nurses' roles, responsibilities, and education should change significantly to meet the increased demand for care that will be created by health care reform and to advance improvements in America's increasingly complex health system. At more than 3 million in number, nurses make up the single largest segment of the health care work force. They also spend the greatest amount of time in delivering patient care as a profession. Nurses therefore have valuable insights and unique abilities to contribute as partners with other health care professionals in improving the quality and safety of care as envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted this year. Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor's degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates. Furthermore, regulatory and institutional obstacles-including limits on nurses' scope of practice-should be removed so that the health system can reap the full benefit of nurses' training, skills, and knowledge in patient care. In this book, the Institute of Medicine makes recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing.

Book Synopsis Factors that Influence the Advisement of Nursing Students Regarding Baccalaureate Completion by : Rosa, Julia Margaret
Download or read book Factors that Influence the Advisement of Nursing Students Regarding Baccalaureate Completion written by Rosa, Julia Margaret and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine associate degree nursing faculty perceptions of factors that influence their career advisement of nursing students to matriculate in nursing baccalaureate degree completion programs. The study was guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1988) as expanded by Godin and Kok (1996). Associate degree nursing faculty perceptions of factors that influence their advisement were viewed through the lens of attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, personal norm and moral norm. An exploratory mixed method case study was conducted. A case state that had mandated articulation agreements between nursing educational levels was purposely chosen. An online survey, developed by the researcher, was sent to all full time nursing faculty from six of the seven associate degree nursing programs in the case state. Thirty-eight (67%) faculty provided quantitative data by completing the survey. Eight of these respondents provided further qualitative data by participating in telephone interviews. Five conclusions were drawn and recommendations were made for practice and continued research. The study concluded that advisement regarding educational continuation by associate degree nursing faculty is influenced by their belief that, given adequate support, and a period of recuperation, graduates are well prepared to educationally advance. In addition, the degree to which linkages had been established with baccalaureate completion programs, influenced advisement strategies by associate degree nursing faculty. Furthermore, faculty described a moral obligation to advise students based on a perceived relationship that was uniquely collegial. Recommendations for practice include development of intentional advisement strategies within associate degree programs that nurture professional excitement and ensure individualized plans for continuation. Stronger collaborative relationships with upper division programs are needed. Innovative advisement initiatives within the clinical arena merit further exploration. Research that focuses on student and baccalaureate faculty perceptions is needed to add to the discourse. Until a reliable method of tracking educational advancement in the case state can be established, evaluation of advisement effectiveness will remain anecdotal.

This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To address the healthcare needs of vulnerable populations, nursing educators should evaluate educational preparedness and identify which factors influence a successive academic trajectory in nursing school. A prospective design was used to determine the relationships and differences among the anatomy and physiology course grade, self-efficacy, linguistic diversity, language acculturation, and components of the National League for Nursing pre-admission exam for registered nurses and first semester nursing course grades of linguistically diverse and native English speaking associate degree nursing students. A relationship exists between the PAX-RN composite score, anatomy mean grade, language diversity, and general self-efficacy score, the Nursing Pharmacology and Nursing Fundamentals course grades for associate degree nursing students. The PAX-RN composite score and the AP mean grade were related to all first semester courses for associate degree students. Differences existed in the academic success of linguistically diverse students and Native English speaking students on the PAX-RN composite scores and Nursing Fundamentals course grades. Students may approach prerequisite courses and preadmission exams differently if the predictive nature of these factors were addressed. Nurse educators can further explore essential admission criteria which may be necessary for academic success among all students, inclusive of diverse populations.

Book Synopsis Factors that Contribute to Men Nursing Student Persistence in Associate Degree Nursing Programs by : John F. Lagosz (Ed.D. candidate at the University of Hartford)

Lagosz (Ed.D. candidate at the University of Hartford) and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nursing profession is in the midst of an epic shortage that will require an additional 400 thousand new nurses by 2026 due to an aging population (Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 2019) and it’s estimated that 11% of the current workforce will leave the profession entirely due to the COVID-19 pandemic (Raso et. al., 2021). Simultaneously, the National League for Nursing (2016) is calling for greater diversity within the nursing profession that includes gender. Nurses who are men may help alleviate the nursing shortage and contribute to diversity within the profession. However, men in nursing education experience barriers related to entering a predominately female profession (O’Lynn, 2004) that negatively affect their abilities to persist (Christensen & Knight, 2014). The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to examine the factors that contribute to men nursing student persistence in associate degree nursing programs. This study utilized the framework of Swail and colleagues’ (2003) model of geometric persistence and achievement to answer the following research questions: what cognitive, social, and institutional factors contribute to men nursing student persistence in associate degree nursing programs. Findings from this study were derived from qualitative data. The men in the study demonstrated a strength-based approach to overcome gender barriers typically encountered in nursing education that ultimately aided in abilities to persist. They achieved this through demonstrating: (a) goal commitment, (b) time management skills, (c) utilization of academic resources, (d) self-care activities, (e) positive outlooks regarding their gender, and (f) the use of relationships. Results from this study shaped the recommendations that inform administrators, faculty, and future men nursing students on the factors that contribute to men nursing student persistence. This study helps fill the gap in the literature on the phenomena and opens the door for future studies of men nursing students in both 2-and 4-year programs and their persistence.
