Youth violence, specifically youth exposure to community violence and youth perpetration of violent behaviors, occur within various contexts. Ahlin and Antunes situate their discussion of youth violence within an ecological framework, identifying how it is nested within four mesosystem layers: community, family, peers and schools, and youth characteristics. Contextualized using an ecological framework, the Routine Activity Theory and Lifestyles perspective (RAT/LS) are well suited to guide an examination of youth violence risk and protective factors across the four layers. Book excerpt: Guided by ecological resilience perspectives this study examined the association between various risk factors (neighborhood risk, discrimination, peer victimization, fathers' risk behaviors) and African American and Latino adolescent boys' physical and relational aggression. Fathers' parenting behaviors were examined primarily as mediators and moderators of those associations to determine how they might exacerbate or protect against those risks. Both adolescents and their fathers reported on fathers' parenting behaviors. Data were collected from 234 adolescents (mean age of 15.17, 34.2% African American, 65.8% Latino) and their fathers. Structural equation modeling was used to test two aspects of a theoretical model that from which two research questions evolved. The first model posited that (a) risks would be positively associated with boys' aggression, and (b) fathers' parenting behaviors would mediate the associations between risk factors and aggression. The second model posited that (a) victimization would be positively associated with boys' aggression and (b) fathers' parenting behaviors would mediate the associations between risk factors and aggression. In the model examining the relation of neighborhood risk and fathers' risk behaviors with adolescent boys' aggression, adolescents' reports of fathers' support mediated the relation between neighborhood risk and relational aggression for African American boys, but fathers' monitoring mediated the relation between fathers' risk behavior and physical aggression for Latino boys. In the mod̤el examining discrimination and peer victimization, adolescents' perceptions of fathers' monitoring emerged as a protective factor of physical and relational aggression at low levels of peer victimization but not high while fathers' self-reports of support emerged as a protective factor against relational aggression at low levels of peer victimization but not high. Future research can focus on t̤hese two racial/ethnic groups to better understand the role that fathers' parenting behaviors play as either risk or protector. Intervention programs should emphasize and encourage fathers' support as opposed to monitoring in the presence of higher risk factors. Programs should involve fathers and sons together and emphasize open communication between the pair.

This increase is concerning due to the adverse consequences associated with teen pregnancy. This study conducted secondary analysis with the 2007 Youth Risk Behavior Survey data. The Risk and Resilience Perspective guided this study to determine key factors associated with teen fatherhood. The overall purpose of the study was to investigate the key factors associated with teen fatherhood risk. Another purpose of the study was to provide pertinent information for pregnancy prevention programs. The sample consisted of 4588 adolescent males between the ages of 15 and 17. Of the 4588 males, 46% (n = 2120) were White, 32.5% (n = 1446) were Hispanic, and 22% (n = 1022) were Black. ANOVA analysis was used to compare mean scores on the investigator developed Teen Fatherhood Risk Scale among age and racial subgroups. The seven questions from the original survey that inquired about sexual behaviors were used to develop the risk scale. Linear regression was employed to assess whether or not the selected variables were predictors of teen fatherhood. Multiple regression was conducted to determine which variables remained significant in the face of other variables. Of the selected risk factors, race was the best predictor of teen fatherhood, followed by lifetime marijuana use. Being a minority increased risk scores by four points. Lifetime marijuana use increased risk scores by three points. Together these two risk factors accounted for 26% of the variance in risk scores. Of the selected protective factors, HIV/AIDS education was the best protector against teen fatherhood. HIV/AIDS education decreased risk scores by two points. Implications for teen pregnancy prevention specific to adolescent males and future research recommendations are presented.
