Book excerpt: This qualitative study was designed to understand the meaning behind the factors that influenced recruited NCAA Division III female basketball student athletes when choosing which institution to attend. A questionnaire, interview, and focus group were used in this phenomenological study to gather data from ten first year women basketball players at three NCAA Division III institutions located in the Southeast. The students ranked location of college, coaching staff, campus visit, academic reputation and potential playing time as the most popular factors influencing college choice. The crux of this research lies in the relationship between each student athlete and the college coach. Every participant was introduced to their current institution through the women's basketball coach. The influence of the coach, the feeling of the campus, coupled with the financial aid package inspired matriculation to their current institution.

Book excerpt: A very large and important subgroup of student-athletes is ethnic minority in Title I high schools. Understanding the decision-making process of this subgroup is important to the high schools that prepare these students to enter college and to the colleges that recruit them. The college choice factors of 207 student-athletes at three Title I high schools in Miami-Dade County, Florida, were investigated. Independent variables were socioeconomic status (SES), race/ethnicity, graduation year, high school, gender, and grade point average. Dependent variables were eleven choice factors: cost of college, scholarship offer, reputation of college, reputation of coach, distance from home, athletic recruitment, opportunity to play early, influence of coaches, influence of counselors, influence of friends, and influence of family. Results showed that the most important factors in the students' choice of colleges were scholarship offer and cost of college, followed by the reputation of the college. There was a significant effect of SES on college choice factors; lower SES students reported that influence of counselor, reputation of the college, and distance from home were more important than higher SES students reported them to be. These findings have implications for both colleges and high schools. It suggests to colleges how to recruit student-athletes from Title I high schools--offer financial aid and highlight the reputation of the college. It suggests to high schools the need for a more focused effort to expose economically disadvantaged student-athletes to more information about colleges that offer athletics and financial aid in or near Miami-Dade County, Florida.

Book excerpt: Little to no research has been conducted examining the factors contributing to athletic department competitive success in NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletics. Several studies have linked student-athlete institutional choice factors to academic factors, while Division III student-athletes have indicated that both athletic and academic programs are important in their college choice (Goss, Jubenville, & Oregan, 2006; Konnert & Giese, 1987; National Collegiate Athletic Association, 2008; National Collegiate Athletic Association Research, 2011; National Collegiate Athletic Association Research, 2016). The NCAA Division III philosophy states that student-athletes should be integrated into the whole of the institution, not treated differently than non-student-athletes, and that admissions standards should be the same for student-athletes as they are for non-student-athletes (Stubbeman & Cooper, 2015). This research examined the relationship between institutional academic profile and athletic department competitive success. Academic profile was measured through institutional selectivity (acceptance rates), caliber of incoming students (ACT/SAT scores), four-year graduation rates, and retention rates (first to second year of enrollment). Athletic department competitive success was measured by the institution's placement in the Learfield Sports Directors Cup (LSDC). Spearman rank correlation was used to examine each independent variable against the institution's points earned in the LSDC. Positive relationships were found between each independent variable and points earned in the LSDC - ranging from -.306 to .563. These positive relationships present various implications and considerations for institutional administration and coaches to consider in recruiting student-athletes and setting expectations for competitive success.

Book excerpt: This volume is a critical and objective study of the contemporary college student athlete. Framed around the process of recruitment, transition, and support of student athletes in higher education, the volume is a response to societal pressures to reform college athletics. Driven by publicity and the potential for revenue gains, colleges and universities have invested heavily in developing athletic programs, coaches, and facilities. Yet few resources are invested strategically in the personal and intellectual development of student athletes. Written by a team of authors with first-hand experience working with student athletes and transitional programs, the volume argues that institutional attention must be directed at caring for the personal and intellectual growth of student athletes. Highlighting some best-practice curricula and exploring the psychological issues surrounding participating in often highly-competitive athletics, the authors consistently conclude that institutional responsibility is of the utmost and immediate importance. Authors also consider the unique settings of student athletes in community and private liberal arts colleges, demonstrating the broad interest in athletics and institutional competition. The result is an important volume that will be of interest to those who counsel and administer intercollegiate athletic programs, faculty and researchers looking for insightful baseline data on the contemporary student athlete, and those concerned with transitional programs and the future of higher education.
