Book excerpt: Factors influencing teachers` levels of technology self-efficacy were examined through a qualitative multi-site, multi-subject case study research design. An initial survey was administered to all full-time, certified teachers at three school sites in order to gauge teachers` current level of technology self-efficacy. From that population, purposive and systematic samplings were used to draw the participants for the case study. A group of nine teachers with varying levels of technology self-efficacy was interviewed and participated in one of three focus groups to better understand factors influencing their current level of self-efficacy. A document analysis was also performed of local school professional development plans. Results revealed several factors that influenced teachers` technology self-efficacy, including personal, behavioral, and environmental factors. Common themes emerged that indicate more can be done to foster increased technology self-efficacy in teachers, which may in turn enhance students` learning experiences.

From this initial data set, four participants with varying levels of self-efficacy were invited to participate in the second, qualitative, phase of the data collection process to better understand factors they perceived to influence these levels. Results revealed that teachers perceived their self-efficacy of one-to-one technology use during literacy instruction to be influenced by several factors including the overall value they assigned to technology and the level of technical and moral support they received. Common themes emerged that indicate more can be done to improve teachers' self-efficacy with one-to-one technology use, which may in turn increase district's return on their technology investment.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study is to examine the predictive relationship between teachers’ age, gender, teaching experience, and grade level and teachers’ technology self-efficacy. This study is important because of its potential to identify factors that may affect educational technology program efficacy and ultimately, academic achievement. The convenience sample included 118 elementary school, middle school, and high school teachers from one rural Pennsylvania school district that implemented a one-to-one (1:1) iPad initiative in 2016. Teachers’ age, gender, teaching experience, and assigned grade levels were anonymously determined using a demographic survey, and teachers’ technology self-efficacy was measured using the Educator Technology Self-Efficacy Survey (ETS-ES). The researcher used a multiple regression analysis to analyze the predictive strength of each predictor variable on teachers’ technology self-efficacy. The researcher failed to reject the null hypothesis at the 95% confidence level since the researcher was unable to prove a significant, predictive relationship between all four predictor variables and the criterion variable of teachers’ technology self-efficacy. The variables of age and gender did make a significant contribution to teachers’ levels of technology self-efficacy, while the variables of grade level and teaching experience did not make a significant contribution. The results of the study can be used by educational leaders to create more targeted technology-related professional development opportunities for teachers. More research is needed to further investigate factors impacting teachers’ technology self-efficacy.

Over the years, acceptance researchers have become more interested in understanding the factors influencing the adoption of technologies in various settings. From the literature, much research has been done to understand technology acceptance in the business contexts. This is understandable, given the close relationship between the appropriate uses of technology and profit margin. In most of the acceptance studies, researchers have sought to identify and understand the forces that shape users’ acceptance so as to influence the design and implementation process in ways to avoid or minimize resistance or rejection when users interact with technology. Traditionally, it has been observed that developers and procurers of technological resources could rely on authority to ensure that technology was used, which is true in many industrial and organizational contexts. However, with the increasing demands for educational applications of information technology and changing working practices, there is s need to re-examine user acceptance issues as they emerge within and outside of the contexts in which technology was implemented. This is true in the education milieu where teachers exercise the autonomy to decide on what and how technology will be used for teaching and learning purposes. Although they are guided by national and local policies to use technology in the classrooms, teachers spent much of their planning time to consider how technology could be harnessed for effective lesson delivery and assessment to be conducted. These circumstances have provided the impetus for researchers to study technology acceptance in educational settings. Although these studies have typically involved students and teachers as participants, their findings have far-reaching implications for school leaders, policy makers, and other stakeholders. The book is a critical and specialized source that describes recent research on technology acceptance in education represented by educators and researchers from around the world such as Australia, Belgium, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, United Kingdom, and United States of America.

Book excerpt: Few studies have considered the relationship between professional development (PD) and self-efficacy with technology tool use, especially for high school science teachers. There is also a lack of research that considers relationships between teachers' demographic factors and teachers' self-efficacy, use of technology tools in the classroom, or their professional development. The goal of this quantitative study was to attempt to correlate science teacher self-efficacy, the PD science teachers have had for classroom technology, and how often they use that technology in the classroom. We also wanted to identify possible impacts of teachers' demographic factors on efficacy, use, and PD. Participants included a random sample of full-time high school science teachers across 46 states. All data were collected through an online, closed-ended survey via the Qualtrics website. The survey was sent to 2456 science teachers and 104 completed it. Outcomes revealed that there are no significant relationships between science teachers' demographic factors and self-efficacy, tool use, or PD for the variety of technology tools given in this study. We also found that science teachers' efficacy was high with every technology except for social networking/media. Overall, the results of this study suggest that the time science teachers spend at PF does not play a role in how often they use technology or how efficacious they were in using those technologies. An implication is that some other factors (besides PD or demographics) might influence how often science teachers use technology in their classrooms. In addition, because they are already highly efficacious, it might be better to move toward observational studies to see if science teachers are using technology in classrooms as effectively as they think they are.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors influencing pre-service teachers' selfefficacy regarding technology integration during their studies in a teacher education program. The study examined self-efficacy, motivations, attitudes, intentions, as well as the personality traits of pre-service teachers who attended teaching methodologies courses in a Post- Baccalaureate program at a public university in the southeastern part of the United States. These pre-service teachers interned in elementary and secondary public schools around the area of Knoxville, Tennessee while they took coursework to pursue their Master's degree in education. Participants were 151 students enrolled in the Post-Baccalaureate program. Data were collected by means of a user-reported self-assessment approach. The instruments consisted of a survey designed for the present study to measure interns' self-efficacy, motivations, attitudes, and intensions towards technology integration, and personality traits. Bivariate correlation analysis revealed that interns' actual usage of technology integration during their internships was significantly correlated with their intention, motivation, attitudes, three sources of self-efficacy (Enactive Mastery Experiences, Vicarious Experiences, and Persuasion), and one personality trait-- Conscientiousness. Hierarchical regression showed that intention and vicarious experiences had direct relationships with interns' technology integration, and that Conscientiousness had an indirect relationship with the usage of technology integration via intention and vicarious experiences. Implications and ideas for future research were also discussed.
