Book excerpt: This general achievement trends profile includes information that the Center on Education Policy (CEP) and the Human Resources Research Organization (HumRRO) obtained from states from fall 2008 through April 2009. Included herein are: (1) Bullet points summarizing key findings about achievement trends in that state at three performance levels--basic and above, proficient and above, and advanced; (2) Background information about limitations of the state's test data and characteristics of the state's testing system, including major changes in its testing system; (3) Figures and tables with the percentages of students scoring at the proficient level and above for all years with comparable data since 1999 and for all grades tested under the No Child Left Behind Act; (4) Figures and tables with percentages of students performing at three achievement levels--basic, proficient, and advanced--for all years with comparable data and for grades 4, 8, and 10 (or adjacent grades, in the case of states that lack comparable trend data for these default grades); (5) Figures and tables with mean scale scores, standard deviations, and effect sizes for all years with comparable data and for the three grades analyzed in this study; and (6) Figures and tables with mean scale scores, standard deviations, and effect sizes for all years with comparable data and for the three grades analyzed in this study. Wyoming has made some changes to its testing program in the last few years. As a result, only three years of comparable test data (2006-2008) are available, the minimum number needed to discern a trend. In general, Wyoming students made gains across the board at the basic and proficient levels. At the advanced achievement level, gains were evident at most grades but results were more mixed. Specific results include: (1) Between 2006 and 2008, the percentage of students scoring at the basic level and above increased at a moderate-to-large rate in reading at all three grade levels analyzed; in math, there was a slight gain in the percentage of students at the basic level and above at the elementary grade analyzed and a moderate-to-large gain at the middle and high school grades; (2) In both reading and math, there were moderate-to-large increases in the percentage of students performing at the proficient level and above at all three grade levels analyzed; and (3) In reading, the percentage of students reaching the advanced level increased at a moderate-to-large rate at the elementary grade analyzed, decreased at a moderate-to-large rate at the middle school grade, and rose slightly at the high school grade; in math, there was a moderate-to-large increase in the percentage of advanced students at the elementary and middle school grades analyzed but a moderate-to-large decline at the high school level. (Contains 6 figures and 6 tables.) [For "State Test Score Trends through 2007-08, Part I: Is the Emphasis on 'Proficiency' Shortchanging Higher- and Lower-Achieving Students?," see ED506121. Book excerpt: Scores of talented and dedicated people serve the forensic science community, performing vitally important work. However, they are often constrained by lack of adequate resources, sound policies, and national support. It is clear that change and advancements, both systematic and scientific, are needed in a number of forensic science disciplines to ensure the reliability of work, establish enforceable standards, and promote best practices with consistent application. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward provides a detailed plan for addressing these needs and suggests the creation of a new government entity, the National Institute of Forensic Science, to establish and enforce standards within the forensic science community. The benefits of improving and regulating the forensic science disciplines are clear: assisting law enforcement officials, enhancing homeland security, and reducing the risk of wrongful conviction and exoneration. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States gives a full account of what is needed to advance the forensic science disciplines, including upgrading of systems and organizational structures, better training, widespread adoption of uniform and enforceable best practices, and mandatory certification and accreditation programs. While this book provides an essential call-to-action for congress and policy makers, it also serves as a vital tool for law enforcement agencies, criminal prosecutors and attorneys, and forensic science educators.

This book was released on 2020-11-21 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Headlines frequently appear that purport to highlight the differences among workers of different generations and explain how employers can manage the wants and needs of each generation. But is each new generation really that different from previous ones? Are there fundamental differences among generations that impact how they act and interact in the workplace? Or are the perceived differences among generations simply an indicator of age-related differences between older and younger workers or a reflection of all people adapting to a changing workplace? Are Generational Categories Meaningful Distinctions for Workforce Management? reviews the state and rigor of the empirical work related to generations and assesses whether generational categories are meaningful in tackling workforce management problems. This report makes recommendations for directions for future research and improvements to employment practices.
