Book excerpt: Organizational commitment (OC) is typically thought of in mainstream research as a beneficial behaviour, with employers mutually rewarding employees for their labor. However, in recent decades, there have been many signs that the benefits of OC cannot be taken for granted. The world of work is changing, with organizations downsizing, outsourcing labor activities and restructuring into leaner entities.Adding to this is the trend whereby almost everywhere, organizations are systematically striving to avoid long-term commitment to their workforce, by resorting to atypical, non-standard jobs (such as part-time work, temporary or agency employment, and other types of insecure jobs). This new regime of employment is an escape from organizational commitment and a tendency to avoid long-term relations. In this book, the author challenges the mainstream research on OC. Surveying the rise and fall of the idea of OC among corporate managers and employees, in an era of escape from responsibility and commitment, the author redefines OC as unique, unrewarded behavior of a minority of employees in times of trouble for their employing organization. These employees, who have alternatives in the labor market, continue to stay unrewarded with their organizations despite their ability to leave for a more secure and rewarding workplace.Presenting this new definition of OC, the author addresses theoretical and empirical flaws in the current concept, while returning to an idea of commitment that is more widely used in social sciences: Commitment as a guarantee of fulfilment of obligations, which are neither motivating nor pleasant, but necessary.

An organizational culture which is not adaptive to the growth and development within an organization will result in weak commitment to employees. This research aimed to analyze the influence of organizational culture adaptability in regard to the organizational commitment of the staff of Universitas Terbuka. The number of respondents was 90 employees at UT Head office, who were selected by simple random sampling methods. The questionnaire used the Likert scale, and data were analyzed by regression using the SPSS 17.00 for Windows program. The results of the study were (1) organizational culture adaptability has a positive and significant influence on the organizational commitment of the staff of Universitas Terbuka. The result shows that the stronger the organizational culture adaptability, the higher the organizational commitment, (2) the coefficient of determination (Adjusted R Square) was 37.2%. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on employee commitment to organizations has most often been cross-sectional in design. Although we have identified a number of antecedents of commitment, the processes through which employees become committed to organizations are still not well understood. The purpose of this paper is to provide a conceptual framework of the commitment process. Organizational commitment is viewed as resulting from reciprocal relationships between behaviors and attitudes at work. The factors influencing the development of commitment are examined across three time periods relevant to the career of employees in organizations: pre-entry phase; early employment period; and middle and late career stages. Results from two previously unpublished longitudinal studies of the commitment process are presented and suggestions for future research are discussed. (Author).

Book excerpt: One of the major challenges facing Sub-Saharan African organizations today is how to effectively manage their resources. Though the importance of effective management of organizational resources is generally acknowledged, published research on the theme is disappointingly scarce. This book hopes to contribute in filling the lacuna. Contributors to the volume, which is the first in a book series from African Journal of Business and Economic Research (AJBER), a peer-reviewed, triennial publication, discuss various management issues in sub-Saharan Africa such as employee motivation, job satisfaction, compensation, organizational commitment, ethics, social responsibility and export management and the interplay between these and the effective management of an organization's resources. They argue that effective management of organizational resources - whether in the public or private sector - promotes efficiency, which in turn enhances the organization's ability to compete. The contributors also offer valuable insights into why many organizations in sub-Saharan Africa are inefficiently managed and offer desiderata for overcoming such challenges.
