Factionalism, a growing phenomenon in Indian government and politics, has not only of late, assumed new dimensions but also infected almost all organizations including political parties, interest group, pressure groups, trade unions, voluntary association etc. It is quite disheartening and distressing to observe that even village community and its government and politics are largely as well as deeply affected and afflicted by this all-pervading evil that has spread its tentacles to eat away the very vitals of the Indian rural society. It has assumed so much of importance and significance that it has attracted the attention of social scientists, policy-makers and administrators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India s rural sector still remains underdeveloped to a great extent inspite of her impressive achievements in the field of technology, science, human resources development, Industry and Green Revolution. The developmental path chosen by Indian planners has failed to evenly spread the developmental benefits in area of health, literacy and minimum subsistence needs. Various social science studies of development processes have either portrayed macro-synoptic scenario largely based upon official statistics or have remained confined to micro level cognitive phenomonologism. The conflicting interest-norm configurations inbuilt into socio-cultural matrices and those generated by developmental inputs have tended to be grossly neglected in social science investigations of rural development processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study constitutes an analysis of factionalism between rival groups in the dominant Congress Party in Maharashtra. The principal question examined is whether a politician's decision to oppose or 'rebel against' party authority is determined or can be predicted by certain characteristics of the individual concerned and his environment (e.g. the amount of land he owns, or the level of education, urbanization, prosperity, etc., of the area in which he operates politically). About 160 Congress Party members on four district councils were interviewed, and their answers provided the main source of information for the analysis. The legally defined jurisdiction of the district councils is rural Maharashtra, and the political factions examined thus operate in a rural milieu.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on politics and society in India, this book explores new areas enmeshed in the complex social, economic and political processes in the country. Linking the structural characteristics with the broader sociological context, the book emphasizes the strong influence of sociological issues on politics, such as social milieu shaping and the articulation of the political in day-to-day events. Political events are connected with the ever-changing social, economic and political processes in order to provide an analytical framework to explain ‘peculiarities’ of Indian politics. Bidyut Chakrabarty argues that three major ideological influences of colonialism, nationalism and democracy have provided the foundational values of Indian politics. Structured thematically and chronologically, this work is a useful resource for students of political science, sociology and South Asian studies.

This book was released on 2014-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rayalaseema region is one of the backward regions of Andhra Pradesh, India, with poor resources and low socio-economic conditions. Factionalism and human rights are natural enemies with no possibility of their co-existence. No person who supports human rights can support factionalism, which results in a grave violation of human rights of innocent citizens. Political conflicts and factionalism in the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh are common social phenomena. The followers and victims of factionalism and members of families of factional politics are often denied their basic human rights. The present book delineates socio-economic profiles of the victims of the factionalism, violation of their human rights, causes of factionalism, and suggestions to combat and eliminate the social problem of the factionalism. Salient judgments of Indian courts on factionalism and sections read with while disposing the factional cases are highlighted. Strategies to improve the socio-economic conditions of victims of factionalism and to enjoy their rights are proposed. Implications of the study are discussed.
