Book Synopsis Our Continent, Our Future by : P. Thandika Mkandawire
Download or read book Our Continent, Our Future written by P. Thandika Mkandawire and published by IDRC. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Continent, Our Future presents the emerging African perspective on this complex issue. The authors use as background their own extensive experience and a collection of 30 individual studies, 25 of which were from African economists, to summarize this African perspective and articulate a path for the future. They underscore the need to be sensitive to each country's unique history and current condition. They argue for a broader policy agenda and for a much more active role for the state within what is largely a market economy. Finally, they stress that Africa must, and can, compete in an increasingly globalized world and, perhaps most importantly, that Africans must assume the leading role in defining the continent's development agenda.

Book Synopsis Trade and Industrial Development in Africa by : Moyo, Theresa
Download or read book Trade and Industrial Development in Africa written by Moyo, Theresa and published by CODESRIA. This book was released on 2015-03-02 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book revisits the perennial challenge that scholars, economists, and politicians have been grappling with since the 1960s. Development, in this book, has been defined in a context that projects it as a multidimensional and complex process which seeks to enhance the human, social, economic and cultural welfare of the people. This book calls for a rethinking of trade and industry for Africa's development. It uses data drawn from national development plans and strategies, and trade and industry issues have been prioritized at the continental level, in key policy documents. On the whole Africa's industry and trade performance have been poor in spite of national, regional, and continental plans. The contributors to this volume propose some alternative strategies and policies which are necessary for trade and industry to grow and to contribute to the well-being of Africa's people. It calls for a developmental trade and industry policy which, fundamentally, must be people-centred. African states should invest time, energy and resources to develop policies which will take into consideration African realities. The different contributors are aware that Africa has experienced strong economic growth in the recent past but this growth has largely been due to a strong demand for Africa's primary commodity exports. It has also been a result of increases in productivity and domestic investment and remittances from Africans living in the Diaspora. It is important to note that despite this unprecedented growth performance, the impact of trade and industry on development has been limited. The book argues that a structural transformation of Africa's economies is inevitable if Africa is to achieve the shift from the dominant paradigm of production and export of primary goods. The various contributors to this book agree that there is need to rethink policy and strategy in order to achieve industrial development in Africa. There is no unique solution or answer that can fit all situations as African countries are not the same. While Africa can draw lessons from other regions which have successfully industrialized, this book argues that policies and strategies will have to be adapted to country-specific situations and circumstances.
Book Synopsis World Development Report 2020 by : World Bank
Download or read book World Development Report 2020 written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global value chains (GVCs) powered the surge of international trade after 1990 and now account for almost half of all trade. This shift enabled an unprecedented economic convergence: poor countries grew rapidly and began to catch up with richer countries. Since the 2008 global financial crisis, however, the growth of trade has been sluggish and the expansion of GVCs has stalled. Meanwhile, serious threats have emerged to the model of trade-led growth. New technologies could draw production closer to the consumer and reduce the demand for labor. And trade conflicts among large countries could lead to a retrenchment or a segmentation of GVCs. World Development Report 2020: Trading for Development in the Age of Global Value Chains examines whether there is still a path to development through GVCs and trade. It concludes that technological change is, at this stage, more a boon than a curse. GVCs can continue to boost growth, create better jobs, and reduce poverty provided that developing countries implement deeper reforms to promote GVC participation; industrial countries pursue open, predictable policies; and all countries revive multilateral cooperation.

Book Synopsis Global Development Finance 2000 by : World Bank
Download or read book Global Development Finance 2000 written by World Bank and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past year, developing countries have started to recover from the 1997-99 global financial crisis. The elements underlying the recovery: strong industrial country growth, robust global trade, and firming commodity prices, should permit more 'self-financing' and more sustainable growth in developing countries than has been the case following previous crises. International capital market flows, however, remain selective and volatile. This publication provides a comprehensive look at external debt and financial flows to developing countries. Volume one examines these developments in detail and charts the prospects for private and public global development finance. It explores the special risks and benefits of short-term capital flows, reviews policy options for countries to safeguard against the volatility of private capital flows, and draws lessons from the past century's booms and busts in private flows to emerging markets. It also reviews debt-structuring agreements and privatisation transactions and contains summary data for country groups. Volume two provides statistical data for 137 countries reporting debt under the World Bank Debtor Reporting System. The country tables present a wealth of information about each country's external debt and cover major economic aggregates and key debt ratios. Data is also provided on debt service paid, average terms of new commitments, currency composition of long-term debt, debt restructuring, and scheduled debt service projections. To facilitate cross-country comparisons of key statistics, summary statistical tables are provided for regional and income groups. This publication is available on a Windows-based CD-ROM that contains all the time-series data from the World Bank Debtor Reporting System, allowing users to graph, map, and extract the data in many formats; as well as the contents of both volumes in searchable page format.

Book Synopsis Structural Reforms, Productivity and Technological Change in Latin America by : Jorge M. Katz
Download or read book Structural Reforms, Productivity and Technological Change in Latin America written by Jorge M. Katz and published by United Nations Publications. This book was released on 2001 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last ten to fifteen years, profound structural reforms have moved Latin America and the Caribbean from closed, state-dominated economies to ones that are more market-oriented and open. Policymakers expected that these changes would speed up growth. This book is part of a multi-year project to determine whether these expectation have been fulfilled. Focusing on technological change, the impact of the reforms on the process of innovation is examined. It notes that the development process is proving to be highly heterogenous across industries, regions and firms and can be described as strongly inequitable. This differentiation that has emerged has implications for job creation, trade balance, and the role of small and medium sized firms. This ultimately suggests, amongst other things, the need for policies to better spread the use of new technologies.
Book Synopsis Trade and Transport Facilitation by : John Raven
Download or read book Trade and Transport Facilitation written by John Raven and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alleviating poverty through direct assistance and economic growth is an important objective of the World Bank. For this strategy to succeed, all potential impediments to the competitiveness of export industries must be tackled and reduced. Informational trade performance and efficiency are essential components of overall success. And in this new economy of instant communication, the main bottleneck is delivery, that is, transport and logistics. National frontiers impose a complex set of procedural requirements on incoming and outgoing consignments. Although the World Bank's investment in visible transport infrastructure to increase trade is significant, trade cannot advance without parallel, systematic improvement in the invisible infrastructure of border entry. The audit methodology set forth in this document offers an assessment of the difficulties, exposes most of the important customs facilitators, and assesses the skills needed for expert advice and action. This publication will be of interest to trade and transport policymakers, professional organizations, consultants, and anyone looking for answers to the transport challenges posed by the requirements of international trade.
