Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life. It wears many different faces throughout time. Sometimes the faces are happy, sometimes sad, sometimes good, sometimes bad, sometimes indifferent. The faces change constantly. The faces are very important. Sometimes they show up to help us grow. Sometimes they are there to teach us a lesson. Sometimes they are there to encourage us. Sometimes they punish us for bad deeds we do and reward us for the good we do. Sometimes, the faces are gorgeous, sometimes, not so much.. The faces make life what it is. Love comes in many forms. It can be a newborn baby, a fresh springtime rain, a cute little puppy dog, or many different forms. It could be the birds chirping at a park or a raging waterfall. There are many different variations of love as well, for example you could say "I love my jeans and I love my wife. Love is constant. It is everywhere. It is all around you, you just may not recognize what it is. When life and love come together, you get faces of the waterfall. Then theres the Light. The omnipotent, all-seeing, all-knowing Light. The Light holds everything together and brings order to a somewhat chaotic world. Some call it a "higher power, some call it The man upstairs, while others, like myself, simply call it God. When life and love get out of whack, the Light brings them together so everything can go on. The Light brightens an otherwise dark world. The poems contained in this book will show the many different faces of life. The lighter side of life and the dark. They will show different forms of love as it comes in many different shapes and sizes. And they will introduce you to the Light of the World as He weaves the threads and brings it all together. I hope you enjoy each and every poem in the book. Thanks for your support.

Book excerpt: In this poetic and haunting tale set in contemporary Appalachia, New York Times bestselling author Ron Rash illuminates lives shaped by violence and a powerful connection to the land. Les, a long-time sheriff just three-weeks from retirement, contends with the ravages of crystal meth and his own duplicity in his small Appalachian town. Becky, a park ranger with a harrowing past, finds solace amid the lyrical beauty of this patch of North Carolina. Enduring the mistakes and tragedies that have indelibly marked them, they are drawn together by a reverence for the natural world. When an irascible elderly local is accused of poisoning a trout stream, Les and Becky are plunged into deep and dangerous waters, forced to navigate currents of disillusionment and betrayal that will force them to question themselves and test their tentative bond—and threaten to carry them over the edge. Echoing the heartbreaking beauty of William Faulkner and the spiritual isolation of Carson McCullers, Above the Waterfall demonstrates once again the prodigious talent of “a gorgeous, brutal writer” (Richard Price) hailed as “one of the great American authors at work today” (Janet Maslin, New York Times).

Lost in the shadows of a tragedy that stripped Aurora of everything she once loved, she's back in the small town of Balsam Grove, ready to face all she's kept locked away for seven years. Or so she thinks. As one of the victims of a string of mysterious disappearances in the small, picturesque Appalachian Mountain town, darkness has become her home-her safe blanket when the world reveals its true colors. But as the walls of darkness start to move in on her, she knows the only way to free herself from her past is to face it, head-on. She just needs to figure out how. Upon arrival, Aurora isn't expecting her first collision to be with the boy she left all those years ago. The boy who betrayed her trust with no regrets. The boy who is no longer a boy, but a man with the same stormy eyes that swept her into his current before she ever learned to swim. She'd thought he was safe. He'd thought their path was mapped out. Turns out neither of them was ready for the crash at the bottom of the cascade.

Book excerpt: From Niagara Falls in the United States to Angel Falls in Venezuela, Victoria Falls in Africa, and Hannoki Falls in Japan, waterfalls provide some of the world’s loveliest panoramas. With their glistening spray and deafening roar, these astonishing natural wonders attract hordes of people each year who seek out, with cameras in hand, these terrifying and sublime examples of natural beauty. While waterfalls have often been considered in terms of their picturesque qualities, their rich cultural background has been neglected. In Waterfall, Brian Hudson portrays these marvels in a new light. He explores the many myths and legends waterfalls have inspired in cultures ranging from Native American to Celtic and Indian, and how they have been depicted in art, literature, film, and music. He also examines their influence on architecture and landscape design, as manmade waterfalls begin to be a staple of parks, gardens, and backyard landscaping. Hudson also discusses the ecology of waterfalls and the conflict that arises from their importance as both a source of hydroelectric power and tourist attractions in many countries. As erosion takes its own toll, the additional environmental impacts of human exploitation could be devastating. A superb addition to the library of any nature lover, this beautifully illustrated book provides a fascinating look at the history and value of these stunning cascades of water.

Remaining means giving up all she's known and loved . . . and leaving means forfeiting what she's come to know--and love itself. Most American teenagers want a vacation in Italy, but the Bentarrini sisters have spent every summer of their lives with their parents, famed Etruscan scholars, among the romantic hills. In Book One of the River of Time series, Gabi and Lia are stuck among the rubble of medieval castles in rural Tuscany on yet another hot, boring, and dusty archeological site . . . until Gabi places her hand atop a handprint in an ancient tomb and finds herself in fourteenth-century Italy. And worse yet, in the middle of a fierce battle between knights of two opposing forces. And thus she comes to be rescued by the knight-prince Marcello Falassi, who takes her back to his father's castle--a castle Gabi has seen in ruins in another life. Suddenly Gabi's summer in Italy is much, much more interesting. But what do you do when your knight in shining armor lives, literally, in a different world?

Book excerpt: A vivid new history of the Battle of Midway that transforms our understanding of the iconic turning point of the Second World War. The stunning and decisive battle of Midway was perhaps the most crucial naval battle in the Pacific theater during World War II. Walter Lord explained away the US victory at Midway against a numerically superior and apparently more skilled Japanese fleet due to 'Lady Luck.' In The Silver Waterfall acclaimed historian Brendan Simms and historian and military veteran Steve McGregor show it was no such thing. Luck had little to do with it. Instead the authors show how the forces of industrial dynamism and innovation were central to the US being able to win the war in the Pacific. Engineers, machinists, test pilots, and a willingness to experiment at scale were vital to the creation of the decisive element that would sink the hopes of Japan along with the pride of their aircraft carrier fleet: the Douglas Dauntless Dive Bomber dive bomber, whose vicious near vertical plummet from the sky to deliver a brutally accurate attack was the "silver waterfall" that the Japanese quickly came to dread. In a few deadly minutes they changed the course of the war in the Pacific. Equally important, the Navy drew on the skills of a wide variety of immigrants or descendants of immigrants--especially those from Germany, the principal hostile power. The engineer who designed the plane which decided the Battle of Midway was Ed Heinemann, the strategist who decided America would defend Midway Island was Chester Nimitz; and the pilot who symbolized American performance on the day was Dusty Kleiss. Without these men, America could not have designed, planned, or done what was needed to win. The Silver Waterfall offers a revelatory new history of Midway, showing that if the Americans were lucky, they made their own luck.

Book excerpt: From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the FALLEN series comes WATERFALL, a novel about love, betrayal, and epic consequences—a world-altering tale told by a girl whose tears have the power to raise the lost continent of Atlantis. This second novel in the Teardrop series is intensely romantic, with strong, hot main characters caught up in a thrilling fantastical love triangle. For readers who love Lauren Kate and the worlds of Alyson Noël, P. C. Cast, Maggie Stiefvater, and Veronica Rossi. Eureka’s tears have flooded the earth, and now Atlantis is rising, bringing with it its evil king, Atlas. Eureka is the only one who can stop him, but first she must learn how to fight. She travels across the ocean with Cat, her family, and Ander, the gorgeous and mysterious Seedbearer who promises to help her find Solon, an enigmatic lost Seedbearer who knows how to defeat Atlas. Once on land, Eureka is taunted by gossipwitches, a group of displaced Atlantean sorceresses, and ambushed by locals struggling to survive amid the destruction her tears have wrought. And she feels no closer to facing Atlas or saving the world when Solon lets slip that love is Ander’s weakness, and that any affection he feels toward her makes him age faster. Trying to make sense of the dark world her sorrow has created, Eureka receives startling insight from an enchanted pond. Her bewildering reflection reveals a soul-crushing secret: if she’s strong enough, Eureka can draw on this knowledge to defeat Atlas—unless her broken heart is just what he needs to fuel his rising kingdom. . . . In Waterfall, Eureka has the chance to save the world. But she’ll have to give up everything—even love.

As a kid, he spun around on many Michigan lakes in his own personalized painted inner tube. He swam in Ocqueoc Falls... went behind Tahquamenon Falls and under Lower Tahquamenon Falls... canoed the AuSable River, even in the winter, as mini icebergs floated along... paddled his kayak to a campsite on the river and watched paddlers in the AuSable River Canoe Marathon race go by... took a raft down multiple white-water rivers in the Eastern and Southern U.S... and hitchhiked to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park a few times in his mid-twenties. Wilks belongs to the Smoky Mountain Hiking Club and the TV Hikers Club. He took up rock climbing and white-water kayaking and became a rock-climbing instructor with an outdoor club called Solar. He paddled and climbed in the Midwest, East, and South United States and also Canada. He took white water kayak lessons and eventually taught some of those classes. He kayaked the Delhi Rapids in Ann Arbor and paddled in the Detroit River into Canada. He also belongs to the Soggy Bottoms kayak club and continues to lead kayaking trips with the club.
