This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) is one of the emerging thin-film photovoltaic technologies. Advantages come from the low cost and easier fabrication process. The realistic overall conversion efficiency already made the commercial availability a reality. It is possible the use of natural dyes extracted from plants in DSSC fabrication to substitute synthetic dyes, which requires complex fabrication processes and the use of toxic and scarce materials, like ruthenium. Natural dye-sensitized solar cells (NDSSC) are still in an early stage, with many research groups working hard to overcome efficiency and stability issues. Natural dyes are cheap, highly available, environmentally safe and easy to extract. Nature has so much to offer to humankind, each plant is unique, with characteristics developed during million of years of evolution. Each biome has an enormous number of species readily available for study. Among them, Brazilian forests are in an outstanding position, with a gigantic quantity of species with hidden opportunities. This work aims to inspire other researchers to explore this field and find in nature new answers for a clean energy demanding world. It is shown the basic aspects of NDSSC study and practical research, from laboratory construction to cells fabrication. After a brief introduction about PV technologies, DSSC is deeper discussed based on a literature review. Physical and electrochemical aspects are presented in details. Natural dyes specificities and application in DSSC are then discussed also based on other researchers findings. With a well-established theoretical basis, this work focus then on the development of a NDSSC fabrication protocol, presenting the most important tests and results achieved. A special highlight is given to the design and fabrication of a solar simulator from scratch. Having the infrastructure, equipments and protocol defined, the fabrication of NDSSC based on Brazilian plants was possible, including plants naturally originated in the country: blackberry, quaresmeira and embaúba-vermelha, and two other non-native species due to their economically important role, of which Brazil is currently the world leader producer, they are: arabica coffee and sugarcane. The found cells efficiencies for all studied plants dyes are in the range of other important research publications, even for the simplified and low cost proposed protocol, which validates the solutions and techniques used. Coffea arabica (arabica coffee) provided the best performance, reaching 0.44% overall conversion efficiency, with no special commonly used chemical treatment, co-adsorbent or purification, such as: TiCl4, organic acids, chromatography and lyophilization. It is hoped this work contribute for the development of an even greener energy generation from sunlight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early anthropological evidence for plant use as medicine is 60,000 years old as reported from the Neanderthal grave in Iraq. The importance of plants as medicine is further supported by archeological evidence from Asia and the Middle East. Today, around 1.4 billion people in South Asia alone have no access to modern health care, and rely instead on traditional medicine to alleviate various symptoms. On a global basis, approximately 50 to 80 thousand plant species are used either natively or as pharmaceutical derivatives for life-threatening conditions that include diabetes, hypertension and cancers. As the demand for plant-based medicine rises, there is an unmet need to investigate the quality, safety and efficacy of these herbals by the “scientific methods”. Current research on drug discovery from medicinal plants involves a multifaceted approach combining botanical, phytochemical, analytical, and molecular techniques. For instance, high throughput robotic screens have been developed by industry; it is now possible to carry out 50,000 tests per day in the search for compounds which act on a key enzyme or a subset of receptors. This and other bioassays thus offer hope that one may eventually identify compounds for treating a variety of diseases or conditions. However, drug development from natural products is not without its problems. Frequent challenges encountered include the procurement of raw materials, the selection and implementation of appropriate high-throughput bioassays, and the scaling-up of preparative procedures. Research scientists should therefore arm themselves with the right tools and knowledge in order to harness the vast potentials of plant-based therapeutics. The main objective of Plant and Human Health is to serve as a comprehensive guide for this endeavor. Volume 1 highlights how humans from specific areas or cultures use indigenous plants. Despite technological developments, herbal drugs still occupy a preferential place in a majority of the population in the third world and have slowly taken roots as alternative medicine in the West. The integration of modern science with traditional uses of herbal drugs is important for our understanding of this ethnobotanical relationship. Volume 2 deals with the phytochemical and molecular characterization of herbal medicine. Specifically, It will focus on the secondary metabolic compounds which afford protection against diseases. Lastly, Volume 3 focuses on the physiological mechanisms by which the active ingredients of medicinal plants serve to improve human health. Together this three-volume collection intends to bridge the gap for herbalists, traditional and modern medical practitioners, and students and researchers in botany and horticulture.

Book excerpt: Photovoltaic technology has been realized as a suitable renewable power source for the fulfillment of increasing world energy consumption with least impact on the environment. Dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) is one such photovoltaic technology which has gained a great deal of attention due to the low manufacturing cost compared tothe conventional Si-based solar cell technologies. Fabrication of DSSCs on flexible substrates enables manufacturing solar cells using cost-effective and speedy roll-to-roll processing systems and also makes the device flexible and light-weight. However,polymer-based DSSCs set restrictions to their materials and fabrication processes. In this thesis, fabrication of DSSCs on flexible polymer substrates have been extensively studied concentrating on the factors related to the slurry preparation, deposition of films and processing of electrodes to improve the mechanical and photovoltaic properties of the device.Initially, mechanically-stable, well adhered TiO2 films based on nanocrystallineP-25 TiO2 slurries were fabricated on indium tin oxide (ITO) coated plastic substrates using ball milling as a part of the processing stage, without the need for binders or high temperature annealing. The strength of the TiO2 films was examined by a novel nanoscratch technique which was developed to assess inter-particle adhesion. Interfacial and photovoltaic properties of flexible dye sensitized solar cells with a ruthenium dye involving two tetra-butyl ammonium carboxylate groups (N-719) were studied. The maximum power conversion efficiency of 4.2% is obtained under illumination of100mWcm-2, for the electrodes fabricated using 20 hour milled slurry and shorter or longer milling times were found to be less optimal.During the second stage of this work, binder-free titania pastes with high viscosity were developed for the preparation of improved quality electrodes for dye sensitized solar cells on plastic substrates. Rheological behavior of ethanol based titania pastes with theaddition of ammonia, hydrochloric acid and water was investigated. The change in the viscosity is correlated with the measured zeta potential of the colloidal titania pastes.Improved inter-particle connectivity and hence better solar cell performance was found for the pastes containing acid or water. However, no such improvements were seen for the pastes containing ammonia. Maximum light to electrical energy conversion efficiencies of 4.9% and 5.0% were obtained for the plastic based dye-sensitized solar cells fabricated using water and acid-added slurries respectively.Thirdly, chemically-sintered, mesoporous ZnO electrodes with improved interparticle connectivity were prepared in the absence of any organic binders, using ammoniaas the sole reagent to encourage interparticle connectivity. The reaction with ammoniumhydroxide was found to increase the connections between ZnO grains by forming nanorods like a structure. The enhancement of adhesion among ZnO grains was evaluated from nano-scratch technique. Two different xanthene dyes were used to sensitize ZnOelectrodes. The photo-voltage of 657 mV, fill-factor of 73 % and photo-current of 4.1mAcm-2 with the maximum light to-electrical energy conversion efficiency of 2.0 % were obtained for plastic based ZnO|Mercurochrome|electrolyte solar cell under 100 mWcm-2light intensity. One of the biggest challenges for DSSCs on plastic substrates is the difficulty in making good quality nano porous TiO2 films with both good mechanical stability and high electrical conductivity. Cold isostatic pressing (CIP) is a powder compaction technique that applies an isostatic pressure to a powder sample in all directions. It is particularly suitable for making thin films on plastic substrates and even on non-flat surfaces. During the final stage of this work, cold isostatically-pressed nanocrytallineTiO2 electrodes with excellent mechanical robustness are prepared on indium tin oxide(ITO) coated polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) substrates in the absence of organic binders, and without heat treatment. The morphology and the physical properties of theTiO2 films prepared by the CIP method were found to be very compatible with requirements for fabricating flexible DSSCs on plastics. This room-temperature processing technique has led to an important technical breakthrough in producing high efficiency flexible DSSCs. Devices fabricated on ITO/PEN films by this method using standard P-25 TiO2 films with a Ru-complex sensitizer yielded a maximum IPCE of 72%at the wavelength of 530 nm and showed high conversion efficiencies of 6.3% and 7.4%for incident light intensities of 100 and 15 mWcm-2, respectively, which are the highest power conversion efficiencies achieved so far for any DSSC on a polymer substrate using the widely-used, commercially-available P-25 TiO2 powder.

Book excerpt: The Opuntia fruits, commonly known as cactus pears or prickly pears, have been suggested by the Food and Agriculture Organization to be a promising and strategic crop in regions suffering from lack of water. In Mexico, India, South Africa, and the Mediterranean, the Opuntia fruits have become popular due to their nutritive value and health-promoting benefits, including antioxidant, antiulcerogenic and antiatherogenic traits and protective effects against LDL oxidation. Additionally, readily absorbable sugars, high vitamin C and mineral content, and a pleasant flavour make Opuntia tailor-made for novel foods. Due to their ecological advantages, high functional value, and health-related traits, Opuntia fruits can be highly exploited in different food processing applications. For instance, Opuntia cactus fruits are used for the preparation of juices and marmalades; Opuntia cactus plants are used to feed animals in African and Latin American countries; Peruvian farmers cultivate Opuntia cactus for growing the cochineal (Dactylopius coccus) insect and producing the natural dye carmine; and the commercial production of food and non-food products from Opuntia has been established in Mexico, USA and several Mediterranean countries. Opuntia spp.: Chemistry, Bioactivity and Industrial Applications creates a multidisciplinary forum of discussion on Opuntia cactus with special emphasis on its horticulture, post-harvest, marketability, chemistry, functionality, health-promoting properties, technology and processing. The text includes detailed discussion of the impact of traditional and innovative processing on the recovery of high-added value compounds from Opuntia spp. by-products. Later chapters explore the potential applications of Opuntia spp. in food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical products.

Abstract: Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) have drawn much attention due to their higher versatility and lower production cost compared to inorganic photovoltaics. The top performers of DSSC have achieved power conversion efficiency over 10%, which is comparable to amorphous silicon solar cells. In this work, new photosensitizers and nanostructure for improving the photovoltaic performance of DSSC were developed and evaluated. Two series of cyclometalated ruthenium(II) complex photosensitizer were presented and their photosensitizing properties in DSSC were studied. Eight cyclometalated ruthenium(II) terpyridine complexes with three carboxylic acid groups on the terpyridine ligand were synthesized. Series A (M1 to M4) consist of C, N, N' ligands substituted with phenyl group whereas series B (M5 to M8) consist of C, N, N' ligands substituted with m-fluorophenyl group. All of the complexes exhibited broad aborption spectra covering the whole visible spectrum. The complexes in series B generally showed better photovoltaic performance than those in series A in the DSSCs. DSSC fabricated from M7 achieved the highest Voc, Jsc and power conversion efficiency among other DSSC, which were 0.56 V, 7.30 mAcm-2 and 2.63 % respectively. Truxene-core donor--acceptor dyes were presented and their photosensitizing properties in DSSC were studied. Eight dyes with either one donor two acceptors system (T2, B2, T2R and B2R) or two donor one acceptor system (T1, B1, T1R and B1R) were synthesized. Dyes with two acceptors have high molar extinction coefficients originated from the charge-transfer transition band, which are almost two times higher than those with only one accceptors. Both the enhanced absorption and better anchoring geometry on TiO2 contribute to the better photovoltaic performance of the two acceptors dyes in the DSSCs. Devices fabricated from B2 and volatile solvent electrolyte exhibited the best photovoltaic performance among the truxene-core dyes. The Voc, Jsc, FF and power conversion efficiency of the device were 0.59 V, 9.69 mAcm-2, 0.63 and 3.62 % respectively. Dyes based on cyanoacrylic acid anchoring groups (T1, T2, B1 and B2) were found to perform better than those based on rhodanine-3-acetic acid dyes (T1R, T2R, B1R and B2R) in both donor--acceptor configurations. ITO nanorod/TiO2 nanoparticle composite films with the three different types of ITO nanorod with different length (150 nm, 600 nm and 1.5 μm) were fabricated on FTO glass substrate. The transmittance and sheet resistance of the ITO nanorod array on the FTO glass substrate were found decreased with increasing the length of the ITO nanorod. When the ITO nanorod/TiO2 nanoparticle composite films were applied as the anode in DSSCs, the device fabricated from 600 nm ITO nanorod with TiO2 'double layer' film showed enhanced photocurrent generation. The improved photocurrent generation is suggested to be due to an improved charge collection efficiency at the ITO nanorod back electrode. Book excerpt: The second book of the four-volume edition of "Solar cells" is devoted to dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), which are considered to be extremely promising because they are made of low-cost materials with simple inexpensive manufacturing procedures and can be engineered into flexible sheets. DSSCs are emerged as a truly new class of energy conversion devices, which are representatives of the third generation solar technology. Mechanism of conversion of solar energy into electricity in these devices is quite peculiar. The achieved energy conversion efficiency in DSSCs is low, however, it has improved quickly in the last years. It is believed that DSSCs are still at the start of their development stage and will take a worthy place in the large-scale production for the future.
