Fabio's adventures up to age of fourteen.

Growing up in the most beautiful part of Italy after World War Two. Being prepared for work at a tender age. Having to do things at the age of four for my baby brother was the first duty I was taught. How the jobs I had to do became constantly more and more. Even if some of them were pleasant duties, it did hinder me from playing. At the age of seven, I was led away from home to earn my living. I ended up with a strange family and had to work from five in the mornings till late at night. Working on farms with animals was a seven-day-a-week job. I didn't even get the whole Sunday to myself. The animals had to be fed and led to the fountain even on Sundays. For the rest of the day on a Sunday, I could do as I liked, except that I had to go to church in a village where I didn't know anybody. Working with animals was a nice, eventful experience that I am pleased to have had. For the Christmas and New Year's festivities, I was allowed to go home to be united with my brothers and meet my friends. I was allowed to go to school whenever the farmer permitted me to go. As no one intervened at my constant absenteeism from school, I assumed that it was normal to work instead of going to school, if the boss so decided. Once I left school, I worked on the building industry in various jobs that I didn't really like. I couldn't find an apprenticeship employment for the trade I would have liked. At fourteen, I left Italy, ended up trying my luck abroad.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From "one of the most significant figures of the last generation of fantasy", comes Francesco Dimitri's debut novel in English, an enthralling and seductive fantasy following four old friends and the secrets they keep. Four old school friends have a pact: to meet up every year in the small town in Puglia they grew up in. Art, the charismatic leader of the group and creator of the pact, insists that the agreement must remain unshakable and enduring. But this year, he never shows up. A visit to his house increases the friends' worry; Art is farming marijuana. In Southern Italy doing that kind of thing can be very dangerous. They can't go to the Carabinieri so must make enquiries of their own. This is how they come across the rumours about Art; bizarre and unbelievable rumours that he miraculously cured the local mafia boss's daughter of terminal leukaemia. And among the chaos of his house, they find a document written by Art, The Book of Hidden Things, that promises to reveal dark secrets and wonders beyond anything previously known. Francesco Dimitri's first novel written in English, following his career as one of the most significant fantasy writers in Italy, will entrance fans of Elena Ferrante, Neil Gaiman and Donna Tartt. Set in the beguiling and seductive landscape of Southern Italy, this story is about friendship and landscape, love and betrayal; above all it is about the nature of mystery itself.

Book excerpt: When ten-year-old Enaiatollah Akbari’s small village in Afghanistan falls prey to Taliban rule in early 2000, his mother shepherds the boy across the border into Pakistan but has to leave him there all alone to fend for himself. Thus begins Enaiat’s remarkable and often punishing five-year ordeal, which takes him through Iran, Turkey, and Greece before he seeks political asylum in Italy at the age of fifteen. Along the way, Enaiat endures the crippling physical and emotional agony of dangerous border crossings, trekking across bitterly cold mountain pathways for days on end or being stuffed into the false bottom of a truck. But not everyone is as resourceful, resilient, or lucky as Enaiat, and there are many heart-wrenching casualties along the way. Based on Enaiat’s close collaboration with Italian novelist Fabio Geda and expertly rendered in English by an award- winning translator, this novel reconstructs the young boy’s memories, perfectly preserving the childlike perspective and rhythms of an intimate oral history. Told with humor and humanity, In the Sea There Are Crocodiles brilliantly captures Enaiat’s moving and engaging voice and lends urgency to an epic story of hope and survival.

Book excerpt: Ideal for students of modern Latin American literature, Journeys of Formation: The Spanish American 'Bildungsroman' offers a lucid introduction to the Bildungsroman as a genre before revealing how the journey motif works as both a plot-forming device and as a means of characterization in several of the most canonical Spanish American Bildungsromane. In the process, the author demonstrates the overlooked importance of the travel motif in this genre. Although present in the vast majority of Bildungsromane, if the journey is discussed at all by critics it tends to be in superficial terms. The author contends that no discussion of the Spanish American novel of formation would be complete without an exploration of travel. Yolanda A. Doub articulates the role of travel as a catalyst in the formation process of young male and female protagonists by examining in detail six representative novels from three different countries and time periods - from Argentina: Ricardo Güiraldes's Don Segundo Sombra (1926) and Roberto Arlt's El juguete rabioso (1926); from Peru: José María Arguedas's Los ríos profundos (1958) and Julio Ramón Ribeyro's Crónica de San Gabriel (1960); and from Mexico: Rosario Castellanos's Balún Canán (1957) and Elena Poniatowska's La «Flor de Lis» (1988).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1690, a dramatic account of piracy was published in Mexico City. The Misfortunes of Alonso Ramírez described the incredible adventures of a poor Spanish American carpenter who was taken captive by British pirates near the Philippines and forced to work for them for two years. After circumnavigating the world, he was freed and managed to return to Mexico, where the Spanish viceroy commissioned the well-known Mexican scholar Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora to write down Ramírez's account as part of an imperial propaganda campaign against pirates. The Misfortunes of Alonso Ramírez has long been regarded as a work of fiction—in fact, as Latin America's first novel—but Fabio López Lázaro makes a convincing case that the book is a historical account of real events, albeit full of distortions and lies. Using contemporary published accounts, as well as newly discovered documents from Spanish, English, French, Portuguese, and Dutch archives, he proves that Ramírez voyaged with one of the most famous pirates of all time, William Dampier. López Lázaro's critical translation of The Misfortunes provides the only extensive Spanish eyewitness account of pirates during the period in world history (1650–1750) when they became key agents of the European powers jockeying for international political and economic dominance. An extensive introduction places The Misfortunes within the worldwide struggle that Spain, England, and Holland waged against the ambitious Louis XIV of France, which some historians consider to be the first world war.
