Book Synopsis Syllables In Tashlhiyt Berber And In Moroccan Arabic by : F. Dell

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended primarily as an original contribution to the investi gation of the phonology of the two main languages spoken in Morocco. Its central topic is syllable structure. Our theoretical outlook is that of generative phonology. Most of the book deals with Tashlhiyt Berber. This language has a syllable structure with properties which are highly unusual, as seen from the vantage point of better-studied languages on which most theorizing about syllabification is based. On the one hand, complex consonant sequences are a common occurrence in the surface representations. On the other hand, syllable structure is very simple: only one distinctive feature bundle (phoneme) may occur in the onset, the nucleus or the coda. The way these two conflicting demands are reconciled is by allowing vowelless sylla bies . Any consonant may act as a syllable nucleus. When astring is syllabified, nuclear status is preferentially assigned to the segments with a higher degree of sonority than their neighbours. Consider for instance the expression below, which is a complete sentence meaning 'remove it (m) and eat it (m)': /kks=t t-ss-t=t/ [k. st. s . t:"] . k. k~t. t. s. . slt. The sentence must be pronounced voiceless throughout, as indicated by the IPA transcription between square brackets ; the syllabic parse given after the IPA transcription indicates that the sentence comprises four syllables (syllable nuclei are underlined). The differences between the dialects of Berber have to do primarily with the phonology and the lexicon.
Book Synopsis The Character of the Extraprosodicity Theory by : Youcef Hdouch
Download or read book The Character of the Extraprosodicity Theory written by Youcef Hdouch and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2016-07-21 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2016 in the subject Speech Science / Linguistics, , course: Phonology, language: English, abstract: The principal objective of this article is to provide a characterization of the Standard Non-linear conception of extraprosodicity. This concept involves the claim that in some given string, certain constituents (autosegments, syllables, feet, etc.) may not count for the purpose of assigning prosodic structure. In this sense, they are extraprosodic. To achieve this goal, the present paper is divided into three sections. First, we proceed by defining this concept, delimitating its types and assessing each one against the other to work out their similarities and differences. The second one deals with the phonetics and phonology of extraprosodicity. The goal of this section is to show that extraprosodicity is phonetically well-motivated and phonologically well-founded. The third section deals with the representation of extraprosodic material. Different proposals are sketched and assessed against each other. In doing so, we are seeking to acquaint the unfamiliar reader with the issues extraprosodicity has raised.

Book Synopsis The Indo-European Syllable by : Andrew Byrd
Download or read book The Indo-European Syllable written by Andrew Byrd and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Indo-European Syllable Andrew Miles Byrd investigates the process of syllabification within Proto-Indo-European (PIE), revealing connections to a number of seemingly unrelated phonological processes in the proto-language. Drawing from insights in linguistic typology and synchronic theory, he makes two significant advances in our understanding of PIE phonology. First, by analyzing securely reconstructable consonant clusters at word’s edge, he devises a methodology which allows us to predict which types of consonant clusters could occur word-medially in PIE. Thus, a number of previously disconnected phonological rules can now be understood as being part of a conspiracy motivated by violations in syllable structure. Second, he uncovers evidence of morphological influence within the syllable, created by processes such as quantitative ablaut. These advances allow us to view PIE as a synchronic grammar, one which can be described by -- and contribute to -- modern linguistic theory.

Book Synopsis Berber Morphology. Introductory Notes by : Youcef Hdouch
Download or read book Berber Morphology. Introductory Notes written by Youcef Hdouch and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2016-07-21 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2016 in the subject Speech Science / Linguistics, , course: Morphology, language: English, abstract: Berber, an Afro-asiatic language spoken in North Africa, is one of the endangered languages in the area. The reason for this is that globalisation has turned attention towards hyper-central and super-central languages like English and French. Therefore, it is judicious to present a synopsis of its linguistic aspects inviting scholars from different schools to investigate issues relating to segmental, suprasegmental and word formation processes. In particular, this article aims to shed light on aspects of Berber nominal and verbal morphology and affixation. As far as the former is concerned, gender and number will be highlighted. As to second, verb structure will be analysed, peculiarities of aspectual stems and derivation pointed out. Finally, we conclude by considering the different affixes that attach to verb stems.

Book Synopsis The Interrelations of Syntax, Narrative Structure, and Prosody in a Berber Language by : Clive W. McClelland
Download or read book The Interrelations of Syntax, Narrative Structure, and Prosody in a Berber Language written by Clive W. McClelland and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is a systematic investigation of the links among prosody, clause structure, and discourse pragmatics in four oral narratives of Tarifit, a VSO Berber language spoken in northeastern Morocco. It is a new method of empirical analysis of language utilizing a unique combination of sound analysis, statistics, grammar and story structure. Using the speech analysis program Signalize, levels of amplitude, fundamental frequency, length, and speed were analyzed. In addition, factors relating to clause structure and discourse pragmatics were quantified. The results of this investigation support some, but not all, claims of previous researchers, and reveal numerous additional interrelations not previously noted. These results suggest that prosody in relation to discourse pragmatics and clause structure may be a rich field of future linguistic endeavor. They also contribute to greater knowledge of a little known language in North Africa.
