Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Personnel and Organisation, grade: 2,3, University of Western Sydney (School of Management), course: Human Resource Strategy, 25 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: During recent years an efficient Human Resource Management (HRM) has become more and more important for companies to achieve and sustain both competitiveness and economic success. Leopold, Harris and Watson (2005) mentioned that Human Resources became matters of considerable competitive advantage. Human Resources, respectively the skills and knowledge of an organisation's staff, as Hamel and Prahalat (1994) called it, has transformed through massive changes in the economical, technological, sociocultural, judicial and political conditions to one of the most important strategic factor of success for companies these days. HRM, as a reaction to these changes in 'Personnel Management', attempts to find various methods of resolution for practice. If 'Personnel Management', 'HRM' or 'SHRM', they all have a common goal: obtaining the achievement potential of all organisational members best as possible. But the 'HRM' approach goes beyond the traditional approach of 'Personnel Management', having a broader focus on the necessary interdependence of all components with each other as well as the connection to other compartments of companies, whose success is seen in straight connection with personnel measures. Thereby Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM) can be seen as extension of HRM, and following the definition of Boxall (1996) it deals with the relationship between the strategic management of an organisation and the management of its human resources within this strategic context. In that case the focus is on long-term personnel decisions as well as on the question how an interaction of corporate and personnel strategy can be achieved. Initially this work is going to introduce and define different organizational strategies a

Book excerpt: In an era that has brought new and unexpected challenges for virtually every company, one would be hard-pressed to find any responsible manager who is not thinking about what the future will bring. In the wake of these challenges, strategic planning has moved from being the reserve of large corporations to becoming an essential need for even small and medium-sized enterprises. But what good is even the most convincing strategic concept if the company’s people are unwilling or unable to put it into practice? The key is to develop people, and to develop them not only for the work of today, but also for the challenges that the future holds. Strategic HR development has become a decisive force for the success of any business. This book, edited by Matthias T. Meifert, shows us which basic considerations we need to remember and what strategic HR development means in practice. Its interesting and vivid approach takes the reader on a tour of the eight stages of HR development, introduces the critical factors, and highlights many practical recommendations for strategic HR development practice in business.

Book excerpt: With the onset of globalization, liberalization and technological market changes, organizations are making many strategic responses by redefining their portfolios, processes, systems and structures. At operational level, these responses are: (i) Portfolio related responses (mergers, acquisitions, demergers, diversification, share buy-back, divestiture, and so on) process related strategic responses (quality strategy, international quality certification, JIT, benchmarking, core competence, etc.) and (iii) structure related responses (strategic business units, matrix structures, and flat organization structures). This well-organized and compact text gives a brilliant analysis of the significance of the HRD system in planning and implementation of strategic responses, focussing on the alignment between strategic responses of organizations and HRD in India~s most valuable companies. The entire theme is presented with the help of exhaustive literature review and is based on empirical study conducted in 59 Indian organizations. The book is unique as it provides overview of 26 strategic responses and the role of HRD in them. The book is profusely illustrated and contains 140 tables, and a fairly large number of figures and boxes, which will enable the readers to grasp the subject with ease. The comprehensive References will be of great help in delving deeper into the topics discussed. Designed primarily as a textbook for postgraduate students of management, and postgraduate diploma students in Business/Human Resource Management, this indepth and fascinating study on strategic human resource development will be highly useful to consultants and practitioners in HRD and all those involved in strategic management/corporate planning.

Book excerpt: This book examines human resource development (HRD) strategy as a learning process, connecting learning and adult development with organizational development and change, and talent development, with a particular focus on the use of artificial intelligence (AI). It provides professionals and practitioners as well as students with processes and tools that will help them meet the needs of employees and the organization. It takes a scholar-practitioner perspective connecting theory with practice. HRD has evolved into a mature field of scholarship in recent decades. At the same time, practices of learning and development in organizations continues to evolve dramatically. At the individual, developmental, and organizational levels, workers, managers, and executives have to be continually learning from current and emerging trends in order to strategically reposition themselves for performance and future possibilities. This includes developing the competencies to navigate the complexities of a world in which people are interacting with ‘smart’ digital technologies that are broadly grouped together under the umbrella term artificial intelligence (AI). Featuring specific strategic learning methods and case studies from senior HRD professionals, this book is a valuable resource for managers, practitioners, students, scholars and others interested in strategic HRD practice.

Book excerpt: What is human resource strategy? How are human resources strategies formulated and how can we explain the variance between what is espoused and what is actually implemented? What impact – if any – does human resource strategy have on the organization’s "bottom line," and how can this impact be explained? Is there one best HR strategy for all firms, or is the impact of HR strategy on performance contingent on some set of organizational, technological or environmental factors? Human Resource Strategy, 2nd edition, provides an overview of the academic and practitioner responses to these and other questions. Applying an integrative framework, the authors review 30 years’ worth of empirical and theoretical research in an attempt to reconcile often-conflicting conceptual models and competing empirical results. Complex theoretical models and scientific findings are presented in an accessible and relevant way, in the context of the strategic decisions that executives are forced to make on a regular basis. This new edition features an updated literature review, coverage of the latest challenges to HR strategy, new mini-cases, discussion questions, additional examples, and an emphasis on the strategic implications of the research, making it an ideal resource for students and practitioners alike.
