Discretionary spending grows with GDP rather than inflation during the first 10 years, Medicare physician pay. rates are not reduced, and all expiring tax provisions are extended until 2019 and then revenue is brought back to about its historical level. Policymakers will need to let revenues increase substantially, decrease spending significantly, or adopt some combination of those two approaches. Contents of this report: Long-term Outlook for the Federal Budget; Long-term Outlook for Mandatory Spending on Health Care; Long-term Outlook for Social Security; Long-term Outlook for Revenues; Long-term Projections through 2080. Book Synopsis Nation's Long-Term Fiscal Outlook by : Barry Leonard
Download or read book Nation's Long-Term Fiscal Outlook written by Barry Leonard and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1992, GAO has published long-term fiscal simulations of what might happen to fed. deficits & debt levels under varying policy assumptions. Current long-term simulations show ever-larger deficits resulting in a fed. debt burden that ultimately spirals out of control. There are two alternative fiscal paths. The first is ¿Baseline extended,¿ which extends the CBO¿s baseline estimates beyond the 10-year projection period, & the second is an alternative based on recent trends & policy preferences. For this update, GAO modified the alternative simulation to reflect a return to historical levels of revenue & a more realistic Medicare scenario for physician payments. Both simulations show that we are on an unsustainable fiscal path. Charts & tables.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-term fiscal simulations of what might happen to fed. deficits and debt levels under varying policy assumptions continue to illustrate that the long-term fiscal outlook is unsustainable. Despite some improvement in the long-term outlook for fed. health and retirement spending, the fed. gov¿t. still faces large and growing structural deficits driven primarily by rising health care costs and known demographic trends. Nearly 80 million Americans will become eligible for Social Security retirement benefits over the next two decades. Yet the real drive of the long-term fiscal outlook is health care spending. Medicare and Medicaid are both large and projected to continue growing rapidly in the future. Charts and tables.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where the Wind Blows Us unites critical practice with a community-based approach to archaeology. Author Natasha Lyons describes an inclusive archaeology that rests on a flexible but rigorous approach to research design and demonstrates a responsible, ethical practice. She traces the rise and application of community archaeologies, develops a wide-ranging set of methods for community practice, and maps out a “localized critical theory” that is suited to the needs of local and descendant communities as they pursue self-defined heritage goals. Localized critical theory aims to decenter the focus on global processes of capitalism in favor of the local processes of community dynamics. Where the Wind Blows Us emphasizes the role of individuals and the relationships they share with communities of the past and present. Lyons offers an extended case study of her work with the Inuvialuit community of the Canadian Western Arctic. She documents the development of this longstanding research relationship and presents both the theoretical and practical products of the work to date. Integrating knowledge drawn from archaeology, ethnography, oral history, and community interviews, Lyons utilizes a multivocal approach that actively listens to Inuvialuit speak about their rich and textured history. The overall significance of this volume lies in outlining a method of practicing archaeology that embraces local ways of knowing with a critically constructed and evolving methodology that is responsive to community needs. It will serve as a handbook to mine for elements of critical practice, a model of community-based archaeology, and a useful set of concepts and examples for classroom study.
