Book excerpt: Nuclear Family Values, Extended Family Lives shows how the current emphasis on the nuclear family – with its exclusion of the extended family – is narrow, even deleterious, and misses much of family life. This omission is tied to gender, race, and class. This book is broken down into six chapters. Chapter one discusses how, when promoting "family values" and talking about "family as the basic unit of American society," social commentators, politicians, and social scientists alike typically ignore extended kin ties and focus only on the nuclear family. Chapters two and three show that the focus on marriage and the nuclear family is a narrow view that ignores the familial practices and experiences of many Americans – particularly those of women who do much of the work of maintaining kin ties and racial/ethnic minorities for whom extended kin are centrally important. Chapter four focuses on class and economic inequality and explores how an emphasis on the nuclear family may actually promulgate a vision of family life that dismisses the very social resources and community ties that are critical to the survival strategies of those in need. In chapter five, the authors argue that marriage actually detracts from social integration and ties to broader communities. Finally, in chapter six, the authors suggest that the focus on marriage and the nuclear family and the inattention to the extended family distort and reduce the power of social policy in the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unraveling the Family History of Jesus is a scholarly attempt to identify all of the persons related to Jesus from 100 BC through 100 AD. Almost all of the significant persons mentioned in the New Testament were in fact related to Jesus in one way or another Starting with the earliest Kings of Judea from 100 BC Mr. Norris shows exactly which Kings were his great grandparents. In making this discovery he puts "flesh and blood" on the names = mentioned in the genealogy of Luke and Matthew. In particular, he discovered that "Matthat", the great grandfather of Jesus named in Luke's gospel, was in fact Antigonus Mattathias II, the last King of Judea. "Matthat" was his nickname, named after his Jewish name Mattathias, but his name in all ancient history, and especially in Flavius Josephus' works, was Antigonus. He thus has remained "hidden" from Biblical scholars for nearly 2000 years. Once this identity is known, however, it becomes clearer just how Jesus had a legitimate claim to the throne of Judea. By learning about the larger family of Anitgonus Mattathias we also learn about Jesus' great uncles and aunts and find that they were deeply involved in the events that led to the rise of Jesus, his death and resurrection, and the eventual destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. Similar revelations are presented on the other side of Jesus' family, the extended family of his supposed father Joseph of Nazareth. In addition, Mr. Norris shows clearly that Joseph was not a "poor carpenter" but was in fact a rabbi and a scholar and was undoubtedly quite wealthy (his father was the Patriarch of Jerusalem who received tax funds from the Roman Empire). When this is all presented it shows a much clearer picture of the surroundings in which Jesus taught and explains how he was able to be an " itinerant preacher" and not have to work for a living.

Book excerpt: The organization and characteristics of early and ancient states have become the focus of a renewed interest from archaeologists, ancient historians and anthropologists in recent years. On the one hand, neo-evolutionary schemas of political transformation find it difficult to define some of their most basic concepts, such as chiefdom, complex chiefdom and state, not to mention the transition between them. On the other hand, teleological interpretations based on linear dynamics, from less to increasingly more complex political structures, in successive steps, impose biased and too rigid views on the available evidence. In fact, recent research stresses the existence of other forms of socio-political organization, less vertically integrated and more heterarchical, that proved highly successful and resilient in the long term in tying together social groups. What is more, such forms quite often represented the basic blocks on which states were built and that managed to survive once states collapsed. Finally, nomadic, maritime and mountain populations provide fascinating examples of societies that experienced alternative forms of political organization, sometimes on a seasonal basis. In other cases, their consideration as marginal populations that cultivated specialized skills ensured them a certain degree of autonomy when living either within or at the borders of states. This book explores such small-scale socio-political organizations, their potential and the historical trajectories they stimulated. A selection of historical case studies from different regions of the world may help rethink current concepts and views about the emergence and organization of political complexity and the mechanisms that prevented, occasionally, the emergence of solid polities. They may also cast some light over trajectories of historical transformation, still poorly understood as are the limits of effective state power. This book explores the importance of comparative research and long-term historical perspectives to avoid simplistic interpretations, based on the characteristics of modern Western states abusively used retrospectively.
