Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to thoroughly prepare the reader for research in string theory at an intermediate level. As such it is not a compendium of results but intended as textbook in the sense that most of the material is organized in a pedagogical and self-contained fashion. Beyond the basics, a number of more advanced topics are introduced, such as conformal field theory, superstrings and string dualities - the text does not cover applications to black hole physics and cosmology, nor strings theory at finite temperatures. End-of-chapter references have been added to guide the reader wishing to pursue further studies or to start research in well-defined topics covered by this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: String theory is one of the most exciting and challenging areas of modern theoretical physics. This book guides the reader from the basics of string theory to recent developments. It introduces the basics of perturbative string theory, world-sheet supersymmetry, space-time supersymmetry, conformal field theory and the heterotic string, before describing modern developments, including D-branes, string dualities and M-theory. It then covers string geometry and flux compactifications, applications to cosmology and particle physics, black holes in string theory and M-theory, and the microscopic origin of black-hole entropy. It concludes with Matrix theory, the AdS/CFT duality and its generalizations. This book is ideal for graduate students and researchers in modern string theory, and will make an excellent textbook for a one-year course on string theory. It contains over 120 exercises with solutions, and over 200 homework problems with solutions available on a password protected website for lecturers at www.cambridge.org/9780521860697.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive survey of the use of the Liouville (and super-Liouville) equation in (super)string theory outside the critical dimension, and of the complementary approach based on the discretized space-time - known as the matrix model approach. The authors pay particular attention to supersymmetry, both in the continuum formulation and through the consideration of the super-eigenvalue problem. The methods presented here are important in a large number of complex problems, e.g. random surfaces, 2-D gravity and large-N quantum chromodynamics, and this comparitive study of the different methods permits a cross-evaluation of the results when both methods are valid, combined with new predictions when only one of the methods may be applied.

Book excerpt: W-symmetry is an extension of conformal symmetry in two dimensions. Since its introduction in 1985, W-symmetry has become one of the central notions in the study of two-dimensional conformal field theory. The mathematical structures that underlie W-symmetry are so-called W-algebras, which are higher-spin extensions of the Virasoro algebra. This book contains a collection of papers on W-symmetry, covering the period from 1985 through 1993. Its main focus is the construction of W-algebras and their representation theory. A recurrent theme is the intimate connection between W-algebras and affine Lie algebras. Some of the applications, in particular W-gravity, are also covered. The significance of this reprint volume is that there are no textbooks entirely devoted to the subject.

Book excerpt: Soon after the discovery of quantum mechanics, group theoretical methods were used extensively in order to exploit rotational symmetry and classify atomic spectra. And until recently it was thought that symmetries in quantum mechanics should be groups. But it is not so. There are more general algebras, equipped with suitable structure, which admit a perfectly conventional interpretation as a symmetry of a quantum mechanical system. In any case, a "trivial representation" of the algebra is defined, and a tensor product of representations. But in contrast with groups, this tensor product needs to be neither commutative nor associative. Quantum groups are special cases, in which associativity is preserved. The exploitation of such "Quantum Symmetries" was a central theme at the Ad vanced Study Institute. Introductory lectures were presented to familiarize the participants with the al gebras which can appear as symmetries and with their properties. Some models of local field theories were discussed in detail which have some such symmetries, in par ticular conformal field theories and their perturbations. Lattice models provide many examples of quantum theories with quantum symmetries. They were also covered at the school. Finally, the symmetries which are the cause of the solubility of inte grable models are also quantum symmetries of this kind. Some such models and their nonlocal conserved currents were discussed.

The book is unique in that it develops all three representations of quantum field theory (operator, functional Schr dinger, and path integral) for point particles and strings. In many cases, identical results are worked out in each representation to emphasize the representation-independent structures of quantum field theory

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current Problems in Particle Physics and Cosmology covers the proceedings of the workshop ""Current Problems in Particle Physics and Cosmology"", held in Ioannina, Greece on June 25-29, 1990. The book focuses on the reactions, problems, methodologies, and processes involved in particle physics and cosmology. The selection first offers information on the search for cosmic axions and experimental limits on light scalars/pseudoscalars and experimental tests of the standard model using the recently collected UA2 data. Topics include limits on the production of light scalar and pseudoscalar particles; measurement of SM parameters; transverse momenta distributions of the W and Z bosons; and mass spectroscopy with jets. The text then takes a look at heavy top quark, fermion mixings, and electroweak multi-particle-production at TeV energies. Discussions focus on third and second generation masses and mixing; neutrino sector; threshold energy; total inelastic multiparticle cross sections; and geometrical flavor interactions at very high energies. The publication examines supersymmetry breaking and dynamical determination of superstring parameters; four-dimensional strings and low energy predictions; and gravity from superstrings. The selection is a vital source of data for readers interested in particle physics and cosmology.
