Book excerpt: This book tells ten urban histories of science from nine cities—Athens, Barcelona, Budapest, Buenos Aires, Dublin (2 articles), Glasgow, Helsinki, Lisbon, and Naples—situated on the geographical margins of Europe and beyond. Ranging from the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth centuries, the contents of this volume debate why and how we should study the scientific culture of cities, often considered "peripheral" in terms of their production of knowledge. How were scientific practices, debates and innovations intertwined with the highly dynamic urban space around 1900? The authors analyze zoological gardens, research stations, observatories, and international exhibitions, along with hospitals, newspapers, backstreets, and private homes while also stressing the importance of concrete urban spaces for the production and appropriation of knowledge. They uncover the diversity of actors and urban publics ranging from engineers, scientists, architects, and physicians to journalists, tuberculosis patients, and fishermen. Looking at these nine cities around 1900 is like glancing at a prism that produces different and even conflicting notions of modernity. In their totality, the ten case studies help to overcome an outdated centre-periphery model. This volume is, thus, able to address far more intriguing historiographical questions. How do science, technology, and medicine shape the debates about modernity and national identity in the urban space? To what degree do cities and the heterogeneous elements they contain have agency? These urban histories show that science and the city are consistently and continuously co-constructing each other.

Book excerpt: "Following the enormous success of the Great Exhibition of 1851, expositions have been held in Europe, America and Asia and provided a stage on which the world has come together to display its achievement and ambitions. These momentous events have also exerted a profound influence on developments in architecture and urban planning, transportation, mass communication, consumerism, science, technology, art, industrial design, popular culture, entertainment and leisure. The revolver, sewing machine, telephone and television have all had their public launch at, expositions, the Eiffel Tower in Paris and Atomium in Brussels were purpose-built for expositions, and one of the greatest paintings of the twentieth century, Pablo Picasso's Guernica, was created specifically for display at the 1937 Paris exposition." "This book accompanies a touring exhibition originated by the Bureau International des Expositions and is written around three broad themes: the city transformed, the world displayed and the future represented. It bridges the gap between a general overview and academic text, providing a lively introduction to the history and significance of international expositions. The experience of visiting an 'expo' was essentially a visual one and the objects featured here are primarily graphic: posters, ephemera, photographs, books and catalogues, all of which help trace the development of these events and the changing ways in which they were recorded as technology advanced, from hand-tinted print to aerial colour photograph."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: The Atomium in Brussels is one of the tourist highlights of Belgium and was built specifically for the World Expo in 1958. Nearly 15,000 workers spent three years building the 2 km2 site, found on the Heysel plateau, seven kilometres northwest of Brussels. The site is best known for a giant model of a unit cell of an iron crystal (each sphere representing an atom), called the Atomium, which decades later remains one of the best known landmarks of Brussels. The 1958 Expo could be said to be a reflection of a changing society and of the economical, technical and social advances towards modernity that paved the way for the age of prosperity the Western World experienced in the sixties. The Expo ran for 6 months and was visited by over 42 million people. The exhibition features archived documents, such as the plans of the 1958 Expo, typical fifties objects, films of the time showing what was going on in the aisles of the Expo, several scale models including the Civil Engineering Arrow and the Place de Brouckère information centre, which transport the visitor back to the world of 58 and the spectacle of this unique event. As a symbol of these years of optimism, Expo 58 left an idyllic picture to the Belgians of a period of hope and utopia that can be discovered or rediscovered through the exhibition. SELLING POINTS: *Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, Expo 58 is due to be featured in an exhibition taking place in the Atomium in Brussels. This lavishly illustrated book is the official catalogue that accompanies it *A fascinating look at a period of revolution in many areas of society, this book is perfect for those who wish to be transported to an age of excitement and fresh ideas, as well as those who can remember the fair itself and the anticipation that preceded it 100 b/w + 90 colour illustrations

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the great exhibitions, expositions universelles and world fairs in London, Paris or Chicago, numerous smaller, yet ambitious exhibitions took place in provincial cities and towns across the world. Focusing on the period between 1840 and 1940, this volume takes a novel look at the exhibitionary cultures of this period and examines the motivations, scope, and impact of lesser-known exhibitions in, for example, Australia, Japan, Brazil, as well as a number of European countries. The individual case studies included explore the role of these exhibitions in the global exhibitionary network and consider their ?marginality? related to their location and omission by academic research so far. The chapters also highlight a number of important issues from regional or national identities, the role of modernisation and tradition, to the relationship between capital cities and provincial towns present in these exhibitions. They also address the key topic of colonial exhibitions as well as the displays of arts and design in the context of the so-called marginal fairs. Cultures of International Exhibitions 1840-1940: Great Exhibitions in the Margins therefore opens up new angles in the way the global phenomenon of a great exhibition can be examined through the prism of the regional, and will make a vital contribution to those interested in exhibition studies and related fields.

Book excerpt: This innovative edited collection charts the rise, fall and possible futures of the word primitive. The word primitive is fundamental to the discipline of architecture in the west, providing a convenient starting point for the many myths of architecture's origins. Since the almost legendary 1970s conference on the Primitive, with the advent of post-modernism and, in particular, post-colonialism, the word has fallen from favour in many disciplines. Despite this, architects continue to use the word to mythologize and reify the practice of simplicity. Primitive includes contributions from some of today’s leading architectural commentators including Dalibor Vesely, Adrian Forty, David Leatherbarrow, Richard Weston and Richard Coyne. Structured around five sections, Negotiating Origins; Urban Myths; Questioning Colonial Constructs; Making Marks; and Primitive Futures, the essays highlight the problematic nature of ideas of the primitive, engage with contemporary debate in the field of post colonialism and respond to a burgeoning interest in the non-expert architecture. This now controversial subject remains, for better or worse, intrinsic to the very structure of Modernism and deeply embedded in architectural theory. Considering a broad range of approaches, this book provides a rounded past, present and future of the word primitive in the architectural sphere.
