Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This graduate text, and Cooper's companion introductory text ('Introduction to the Technology of Explosives'), serve the same markets as the successful explosives reference by Meyer, now in its 4th edition. VCH also published the International Journal of Propellants, Explosives, and Pyrotechnics. The resulting package would give VCH the major presence in the field. This text presents the basic technologies used in the engineering of explosives and explosive systems, i.e., chemistry, burning, detonation, shock waves, initiation theories, scaling. The book is written for upper-division undergraduate or graduate-level scientists and engineers, and assumes a good grasp of basic physics, chemistry, mechanics and mathematic through calculus. It is based on lecture notes used for graduate courses at the Dept. of Energy Laboratories, and could serve as a core text for a course at schools of mining or military engineering. The intent of the book is to provide the engineer or scientist in the field with an understanding of the phenomena involved and the engineering tools needed to solve/ design/ analyze a broad range of real problems.

Book excerpt: Explosive ordnance engineering is the technical evaluation of risk to the public associated with ordnance contaminated sites, the formulation of risk reduction measures, trade off analysis to compare alternate risk reduction measures and recommendation of the best alternative with respect to engineering judgments and public input. The analysis and evaluations must be mindful all factors normally associated with a full public interest review including a complete range of environmental considerations. We are now engaged in a formalized decision making process were simple solutions require detailed analysis to assure the validity of face value assumptions. We can no longer rely on DOD's or the general public's intolerance for ordnance related risk. Acceptable solutions must appraise environmental consequences, cost and public acceptance, along with safety consideration. Explosive ordnance engineering is interdisciplinary planning, study, design, and remedial action involving ordnance and explosive waste contamination in accordance with CERCLA and the National Contingency Plan (NCP). Programmatic planning and decision making require engineering and other professional disciplines. They are - site inspections, engineering reports (remedial investigations), feasibility studies, engineering evaluations, cost analysis, miscellaneous route surveys, and others.

Book excerpt: The chapters in this volume were presented at the July–August 2008 NATO Advanced Study Institute on Unexploded Ordnance Detection and Mitigation. The conference was held at the beautiful Il Ciocco resort near Lucca, in the glorious Tuscany region of northern Italy. For the ninth time we gathered at this idyllic spot to explore and extend the reciprocity between mathematics and engineering. The dynamic interaction between world-renowned scientists from the usually disparate communities of pure mathematicians and applied scientists which occurred at our eight previous ASI’s continued at this meeting. The detection and neutralization of unexploded ordnance (UXO) has been of major concern for very many decades; at least since the First World war. UXO continues to be the subject of intensive research in many ?elds of science, incl- ing mathematics, signal processing (mainly radar and sonar) and chemistry. While today’s headlines emphasize the mayhem resulting from the placement of imp- vised explosive devices (IEDs), humanitarian landmine clearing continues to draw signi?cant global attention as well. In many countries of the world, landmines threaten the population and hinder reconstruction and fast, ef?cient utilization of large areas of the mined land in the aftermath of military con?icts.

Book excerpt: The continued development of a low-cost and safe method for neutralizing explosive threats is reported. The concept depends on the use of pure nitromethane in a totally encased lightweight plastic shaped charge, and the in situ injection of a minute quantity of diethylenetriamine just prior to employment. Penetration and impact initiation capabilities of a baseline charge, as well as function reliability were previously demonstrated. The jet from a previously developed brass encased baseline charge is fully characterized from flash radiography, and important technical issues relative to computational prediction are resolved. A new precision 42 degree lined charge is shown to outperform the baseline by as much as 6 to 74 percent over the standoff range studied. These improvements allowed for the incorporation of a Teflon body and a bi-material Teflon/copper liner in conformance with the goal of total encasement of the nitromethane. Relative differences in jetting characteristics and quantitative assessments of the penetration capability of the new design and small performance decrements resulting from the plastic substitutions are reported.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rock Blasting and Explosives Engineering covers the practical engineering aspects of many different kinds of rock blasting. It includes a thorough analysis of the cost of the entire process of tunneling by drilling and blasting in comparison with full-face boring. Also covered are the fundamental sciences of rock mass and material strength, the thermal decomposition, burning, shock initiation, and detonation behavior of commercial and military explosives, and systems for charging explosives into drillholes. Functional descriptions of all current detonators and initiation systems are provided. The book includes chapters on flyrock, toxic fumes, the safety of explosives, and even explosives applied in metal working as a fine art. Fundamental in its approach, the text is based on the practical industrial experience of its authors. It is supported by an abundance of tables, diagrams, and figures. This combined textbook and handbook provides students, practitioners, and researchers in mining, mechanical, building construction, geological, and petroleum engineering with a source from which to gain a thorough understanding of the constructive use of explosives.
