Book excerpt: Exploring Travel and Tourism: Essays on Journeys and Destinations offers a broad treatment of topics in global travel/tourism studies through articles first presented at Travel and Tourism panels at Mid-Atlantic Popular/American Culture Association conferences between 2007 and 2010. Through archival research, close readings and case studies, the authors assembled here examine the significance of travel and the tourist experience over the last two hundred years, from Borneo to Cuba to Niagara Falls, and places in between. The contributions seek to unpack the meanings of nationality, postcolonialism, place, gender, class and the Self/Other dyad as they bump up against the framework of travel studies. Taken together, the articles speak to central issues in current scholarly debates about travel, tourism and culture from various historical, geographical and disciplinary perspectives. The contributions are grouped thematically into three sections. Part I, â oeThe Personal Travel Narrative: Constructing the Self Through Encounters with the Other, â offers close readings of travelogues, both published and unpublished. Part II, â oeConstructing a National Identity Through Tourism, â details the ways that nations and states market themselves to tourists. Part III, â oeThe Meaning of Journey; The Meaning of Destination, â investigates places, both real and created, and the ways people travel to get to them.

Book Synopsis Exploring the Use and Impact of Travel Guidebooks by : Victoria Peel
Download or read book Exploring the Use and Impact of Travel Guidebooks written by Victoria Peel and published by Channel View Publications. This book was released on 2016-02-04 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides the first comprehensive examination of travel guidebooks and their conceptualisation, use and impact. Guidebooks have been key tourism paraphernalia for almost two centuries and although researched in some areas, academic knowledge on guidebooks in tourism has not been expansively communicated. The uncritical, unreflective and largely pejorative approach to guidebooks in the public sphere, and to some degree also present in academia, is reassessed in this book. This challenges the current limited tourism research approaches to the topic, including the routinely held assumption that the internet has all but destroyed the printed guidebook. This book will be a useful resource for postgraduate students and researchers in tourism and tourism communications and consumption.

Book Synopsis Explorer Travellers and Adventure Tourism by : Jennifer Laing
Download or read book Explorer Travellers and Adventure Tourism written by Jennifer Laing and published by Channel View Publications. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the nexus between exploring and tourism and argues that exploration travel – based heavily on explorer narratives and the promises of personal challenges and change – is a major trend in future tourism. In particular, it analyses how romanticised myths of explorers form a foundation for how modern day tourists view travel and themselves. Its scope ranges from the 'Golden Age' of imperial explorers in the 19th and early 20th centuries, through the growth of adventure and extreme tourism, to possible future trends including space travel. The volume should appeal to researchers and students across a variety of disciplines, including tourism studies, sociology, geography and history.
Book Synopsis An Introduction to the Geography of Tourism by : Velvet Nelson
Download or read book An Introduction to the Geography of Tourism written by Velvet Nelson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-03-03 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourism is an astonishingly complex phenomenon that is becoming an ever-greater part of life in today’s global world. This clear and engaging text introduces undergraduate students to this vast and diverse subject through the lens of geography, the only field with the breadth to consider all of the aspects, activities, and perspectives that constitute tourism. Indeed, geography and tourism have always been interconnected, and Velvet Nelson reinforces the relationship between them by using both human and physical geography to interpret all facets of tourism—economic, social, and environmental. She shows how geography provides the tools and concepts to consider both the positive and negative factors that affect tourists and destinations as well as the effects tourism has on both peoples and places. Her real-world case studies, based both on research and on the experiences of tourists themselves, vividly illustrate key issues. This comprehensive, thematically organized introduction will enhance students’ understanding of geographic concepts and how they can be used as a way of viewing and understanding the world.

Book Synopsis A Landscape of Travel by : Jenny T. Chio
Download or read book A Landscape of Travel written by Jenny T. Chio and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2014-03-28 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the number of domestic leisure travelers has increased dramatically in reform-era China, the persistent gap between urban and rural living standards attests to ongoing social, economic, and political inequalities. The state has widely touted tourism for its potential to bring wealth and modernity to rural ethnic minority communities, but the policies underlying the development of tourism obscure some complicated realities. In tourism, after all, one person’s leisure is another person’s labor. A Landscape of Travel investigates the contested meanings and unintended consequences of tourism for those people whose lives and livelihoods are most at stake in China’s rural ethnic tourism industry: the residents of village destinations. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted in Ping’an (a Zhuang village in Guangxi) and Upper Jidao (a Miao village in Guizhou), Jenny Chio analyzes the myriad challenges and possibilities confronted by villagers who are called upon to do the work of tourism. She addresses the shifting significance of migration and rural mobility, the visual politics of tourist photography, and the effects of touristic desires for “exotic difference” on village social relations. In this way, Chio illuminates the contemporary regimes of labor and leisure and the changing imagination of what it means to be rural, ethnic, and modern in China today.
