Understanding how sociocultural factors and beliefs contribute to Black women's risky sexual behavior is critical in understanding this health disparity. This study investigated the mediating influence of silencing the self (i.e., putting the needs and wants of a romantic partner before one's own needs) on the relationship between risky sexual behaviors and self-esteem, gender role beliefs, and gender ratio imbalance beliefs and behaviors (GRIBBs) in Black female college students. Participants included 99 female undergraduate students enrolled at a regional Mid-South University. Results demonstrated that risky sexual behavior was not significantly associated wtih the hypothesized variables. Higher scores on silencing the self was significantly associated with lower self-esteem (b = -1.42, p .001) and higher GRIBBS (b = .82, p .001). The results suggest that silencing the self can still adversely impact Black women, despite its non-significant relationship with risky sex. .

Book excerpt: A sex ratio imbalance has been observed in the Black community for decades, in which Black women outnumber Black men. However, there is limited scholarly research examining the potential consequences this imbalance has on the psychological, emotional, and social functioning of Black women. To begin to understand the potential consequences of the sex ratio imbalance, we consider the health benefits of romantic partnership, in addition to exploring the unique experiences of Black men and women that likely contribute to perceived mate availability. This study examined the associations among Black women’s perceived shortage of Black men and psychosocial functioning among a sample of Black emerging adult women. We hypothesized that the importance of having a Black male partner and resilience would moderate the relationship between perceived shortage of Black men and psychosocial functioning. Psychosocial functioning is defined by depressive symptoms, substance use, risky sex behaviors, and dating a gang member. Perceived shortage of Black men and depressive symptoms were significantly related, and resilience was significantly negatively related to depressive symptoms at both the bivariate and multivariate levels. These findings suggest that perceived partner availability among Black women is meaningful for understanding their psychological, social and emotional functioning, in addition to highlighting the importance of encouraging Black women to identify and utilize internal and external resources to increase and nurture resilience.
