This study investigated the role of age, race, and gender in the career advancement of African American millennial women (AAMW) and identified barriers affecting their career growth by using a qualitative phenomenological approach. The study used Intersectionality, Self-Efficacy, and Critical Race theories to examine the perspectives of AAMW and systemic barriers faced when seeking to advance their careers. The research questions of this phenomenological research study were focused on the lived experiences of African American millennial women in their childhood, educational, and workplace experiences. Data were collected from nine African American women, who identify as millennials born between 1980 and 1995, employed in the private sector in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. The study findings revealed that most participants believed that they were viewed in a negative light by their own peers and managers and cite their childhood experiences--in particular, the influence of observed female leadership during their upbringing--as having an impact on how they navigate the workplace. Practical recommendations include ensuring managers and supervisors of AAMW create opportunities for feedback and skill development for them to advance in the workplace, creating mentoring programs within organizations, and developing diversity and equity programming to improve workplace culture. Recommendations for African American millennial women include taking more ownership over their careers and seeking to learn what is required for promotion and advancement to ensure they are better positioned for career growth. Recommendations for further study include conducting a study with larger sample size of African American millennial women to understand the lived experiences of this workforce generation across employment industries and geographic location.

Despite gaining access to higher education hundreds of years after Whites and even over a decade after Black men, Black women attain graduate degrees at a higher rate than White women and Black men. Regardless of this extraordinary accomplishment, there are few studies examining the experiences of Black women in higher education and even fewer that are focused solely on middle aged, Black women in higher education. Thus, the purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine the experiences of midlife, Black, female doctoral students. The overarching question guiding this study was: What meanings did midlife, Black, female doctoral students attach to their doctoral experiences? Subsidiary questions were a) What motivated study participants to pursue doctoral study at this stage in their lives? b) What challenges and barriers did participants experience as Black, female, midlife doctoral students? c) What factors did study participants perceive as facilitating their persistence? and d) What did study participants perceive as the value of their experiences? Data were collected from nine participants using in-depth semi-structured interviews, artifacts, critical incident reflections and member checks. Participants were selected from various institutions and from a diverse group of programs. Findings were generated using Colaizzi0́9s phenomenological data analysis method as a guide. Six themes emerged from this analysis a) time is of the essence, b) I cannot do this alone, c) race matters, d) the woman in the mirror, e) is age just a number? and f) it will all be worth it. As this study was concerned with examining the experiences of midlife. Black, female doctoral students and how the intersection of these three locations impacted the doctoral experience, a conceptual framework incorporating Black feminist thought, intersectionality and midlife development was also used in order to analyze the phenomenon. Findings from this study point to the resilience and determination of midlife Black women in doctoral programs. Occupying educational spaces allowed these women to interrupt negative images and perceptions of Blacks in general, and older Black women specifically. Findings from the study will add to the paucity of research focused on older, Black, female doctoral students.

Raising the Race is the first scholarly book to examine how black, married career women juggle their relationships with their extended and nuclear families, the expectations of the black community, and their desires to raise healthy, independent children. Drawing from extensive interviews with twenty-three Atlanta-based professional women who left or modified careers as attorneys, physicians, executives, and administrators, anthropologist Riché J. Daniel Barnes found that their decisions were deeply rooted in an awareness of black women’s historical struggles. Departing from the possessive individualistic discourse of “having it all,” the women profiled here think beyond their own situation—considering ways their decisions might help the entire black community. Giving a voice to women whose perspectives have been underrepresented in debates about work-family balance, Barnes’s profiles enable us to perceive these women as fully fledged individuals, each with her own concerns and priorities. Book excerpt: The purpose of this applied study was to solve the problem of freshman African American female students being unaware of careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, at universities located in the United States’ southern region and to formulate a solution for career advisors to implement. Historically, African American female students have identified with traditional female career fields in nursing, caretaking, and teaching and have infrequently pursued non-traditional careers. For African American female students, educational accomplishments yield access to professional advancement possibilities, higher wages, extensive job opportunities, and job satisfaction, especially when they are aware of underrepresented careers. Krumboltz (1976) and Pask’s (1975) career selection theories were explored to identify barriers that would interfere with career advisors exploring non-traditional careers with this student population. This study adopted a multimethod approach of gathering data that incorporated qualitative and quantitative methodologies by utilizing semistructured interviews, a review of university documents, and a survey that utilized a 5-point Likert scale. The overwhelming theme that resonated throughout the study was the importance of improving communication and trust between career advisors and freshman African American female students. As the enrollment of African American females continues to increase, cultural sensitivity and awareness training emerged as pivotal for universities to embrace. Students are also encouraged to meet with a career advisor their freshman year to explore career opportunities they may not have considered and to become familiar with other available services.

Mentoring is a major factor in the success of individuals and without successful mentoring, many African Americans face adversity, isolation, and unnecessary hardships. Mentoring in the African American community has been a source of comfort for many years. The familial unit has served as a sounding board, a source of support and a safe place to disclose ones innermost feelings encompassing mental, spiritual and career struggles. Mentoring in all aspects of life is beneficial to the success of the individual, whether in education, ones social life, or employment. With individuals that are committed to the mentoring process, both parties will find mentoring beneficial and rewarding. It is essential for African Americans to reach back and lift up a protégé while simultaneously climbing the ladder of success. The issue is addressed to academics and schoolteachers as well as researchers in the field of physics education.
