The U.S. is often described as the land of opportunity abroad, but this research intends to explore that perception for international students, especially African students. Many consider African international students as the gateway to local business owners in the U.S seeking to expand a wider global horizon, especially in Africa. This research explored the different types of academic and social challenges faced by African international students in collegiate institutions in America through auto-ethnographic research, and to find possible solutions to those challenges faced by African students. This is a qualitative research approach that used the sequential auto-ethnographic experience of the author as the research tool in identifying and categorizing some of the challenges faced by African international students. It is the researcher’s intention that the findings in this research will be used as a guide for the next group of African international students aspiring to come to the U.S to study.

Book excerpt: In many countries across the world, the demographic compositions of universities have changed with the increasing numbers of international students. According to the OECD (2014) in 2012 there were 4.5 million students studying at universities in countries other than the ones in which they had been born. It was more than double the number in 2000. International student mobility is a result of globalisation and the internationalisation of higher education. This book reviews these developments as they relate to Africa. It examines the changing social relations of diversity of postgraduate South African and international students living together in residence at the University of Pretoria. It is an instrumental, qualitative case study based on content analyses of semi-structured interviews with more than 90 students. There is a dearth of such studies in African higher education. The academic literatures have concentrated on educational change at national, continental and global levels. It is unknown what is happening on the ground, from the point of view of the daily experiences and perceptions of local and international students. This research project draws on community studies to analyse the sociology of three residences at the University of Pretoria, at which most of the postgraduate international students live with their South African peers. The majority of the international students come from other African countries. This community, across the three sites, is analysed in relation to the intersectionality of race, socio-economic class, gender and sexuality and, especially, nationality. These social relations embedded within the residence-community constitute a fundamental characteristic of globalisation: The inter-relationship between the nation state (nationality) and the international developments (globalisation and internationalisation) that have undermined the nation states independence and autonomy. The problem is viewed at the cultural coalface at one university community, rather than systemically and structurally from the top. Put another way, students constantly engage with representations of where they come from and the global realities they encounter at the university. This is illustrated in analyses of the intersectionality of diversity relations. The author shows the range, complexities and specificities of diversity and its changing social dynamics. It is hoped that such studies can be compared with others in international education in Africa, the global South and the developed world.

This study identified and analysed factors contributing to the integration of international students in South Africa and the universities at which they are registered, using TintoaÌ22́Ơ4́Øs Student Integration Model as a theoretical framework. The purpose of this study was to explore the academic and social experiences of international students at South African universities, the influence of their academic and social experiences on their integration in South Africa and the institutions they are registered at, as well as the coping strategies they employ to facilitate their integration in this new environment. Secondary data analysis was used to explore the experiences of international students in South Africa. The data were originally gathered for the purposes of a project on student mobility in Africa using a mixed methods design. For the purpose of this study, only qualitative data collected from face-to-face semi-structured interviews with 50 international students from five South African universities was used. A thematic method was used to analyse the data. The findings revealed that international students at South African universities are faced with numerous challenges in their attempts to integrate in the new environment. These include language barriers, unfamiliar teaching styles, discrimination and crime, and a lack of socialisation with domestic students. However, the findings also revealed that international students appreciated the academic benefits they gained from studying at South African universities.

Book excerpt: This dissertation explores the lived experiences of African American college students and recent graduates who studied abroad. These students’ experiences were examined to determine reasons for the gap between the numbers of African American and Caucasian students who study abroad. The researcher conducted a mixed-methods study using a survey that included yes/no, Likert scale, and open-ended questions. Twenty-six students completed the survey. The following themes emerged from some of the responses: students felt inadequately prepared financially and culturally, some of them experienced isolation and homesickness, racism and academic challenges. There were positive themes as well, including a sense of confidence as a result of studying abroad, strengthened foreign language skills, and global connections. While the majority of the participants experienced challenges, most of them said they would study abroad again and all but one of them completed their program. Study findings suggest that removing the barriers listed would result in more positive study abroad experiences for African American students.

Book excerpt: This study was conducted to investigate the cultural experiences of sub-Saharan African international students studying in U.S. universities and colleges. The researcher used qualitative research methods to examine how being from another culture impacts their cultural experiences, and what factors had an effect on their experiences. Eight students participated in the study, including four graduates and four undergraduates. They came from three African regions, and studied various disciplines. They had lived in the U.S. from 1 to 6 years, and had attended Elm University from 1 to 4 years. They participated in individual interviews that addressed differences between the U. S. and their home country cultures in the areas of education, relationships, and other supports and challenges, including adjusting to U.S. food and social customs; and the changes they experienced as a result of studying in the U.S. A single observation and documents were also used to collect data. The data were analyzed using the qualitative method of data analysis. The analysis produced 3 domains, 7 categories, 8 themes, and 15 subthemes. The students identified several differences between their home country cultures and education systems and those of the U.S. Participants also indicated that they were impacted by their cross-cultural transition process. They identified relationships, campus programs and services, and their own behaviors and perspectives, including their study habits, personal skills, and experiences as factors that were helpful to their cross-cultural transition process. They were negatively impacted by the differences in pronunciation and academic writing, the act of being asked out of campus dormitories during vacation breaks, and the absence of campus transportation to ease travel. Participants also experienced differences in teaching and evaluation methods. The findings suggest that though sub-Saharan African international students meet their cultural and educational goals in the U.S. their experiences could be less challenging, and more rewarding if universities and colleges recognize the differences in culture, and consider their unique needs; including having different expectations of U.S. education, and going through the process of cross-cultural transition.

Book excerpt: "This study explored the acculturative experiences of international graduate students of Color. Current literature on international students' acculturative experiences is predominantly limited to students' perceived inadequacies (e.g., language skills) and challenges (e.g., "passive presence"). Although knowledge about these students' challenges is valuable for counselors to provide effective interventions, a preoccupation with limitations and challenges of this community deprives counselors of an opportunity to offer an empowering space to further strengthen international students' cultural assets and coping strategies (e.g., strong familial and ethnic community affiliation and personality traits of resilience) in the face of adversities. Perhaps this preoccupation partially explains why the utilization rate of campus counseling services for international students remains at a dismal 2% (Nilsson, Berkel, Flores, & Lucas, 2004; Yi, Lin, Jenny, & Kishimoto, 2003). The Eurocentric narrative of international students as culturally impoverished perpetuates an impression of deficiency, consequently perhaps limiting what college counselors address with their international student clients, especially those who come from People of Color communities. Given that international students constitute almost 14% of total enrollment in graduate schools in the U.S., this study focused on the experiences of international graduate students of Color through interviews analyzed using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (Smith, 1996, 2007, 2009). Yosso's (2005) theory of Community Cultural Wealth challenges the dominant interpretation of cultural capital and highlights the diversity of cultural assets found in minoritized communities. A fit between the study findings and Yosso's (2005) was also explored as a secondary research question. Eight participants were interviewed. A total of nine super-ordinate themes were identified: Acceptance and Interactions with the American Society, Higher Education in the US, Adverse Mental Health Experiences, Home Country and Influences, Acculturation, Coping Strategies, Campus Counseling Services, Familial Cohesiveness and Growth and Self-Development. Participants identified a variety of mental health stressors and cultural capitals to overcome the former.
