Psychosocial skills are defined as: intrinsic motivation, non-cognitive skills, and resiliency. The structural framework, modified from that of Conley (2008), identifies major contributing factors in student readiness for college. In addition, the belief that these factors are most effective when they work together (Epstein, 2011), and rooted in the foundation of behavioral psychology, and the belief that psychosocial skills can be developed. This phenomenological, mixed methods, study examined the impact that parents and the school have on the perceptions of student psychosocial readiness for college and found that consciousness raising, practice, and the development of internal meaning for the importance of psychosocial skill development is critical to the successful transition into a four-year university. The study was able to identify processes currently in place that impact psychosocial readiness for college, providing an opportunity to identify potential changes in practice. Improving parent communication regarding the importance of developing psychosocial skills in their students, and best practices, including more intentional programming where students are expected to interact with varying communities, to practice to develop some of the expressed psychosocial skills, arming students with tools that could better prepare students for the transition into college.

The necessary skills and dispositions needed to be successful at the college level are purposely provided through the nationally acclaimed program Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID). This qualitative study investigated the impact of the program on student perceptions of college readiness through the actual voices of the students as participants in the AVID program, and then as participants in the college/university setting. Particular attention was given to those students characterized as first generation college students. The study also filled a specific need at the high school where the research was conducted to bring the school in line with educational practice with regard to college readiness, especially with the growing population of first generation college students. Grounded theory was utilized through an empirical analysis of qualitative data sources. Focus group and individual interviews were conducted with AVID participants and administrators to determine the impact of the AVID program on students' perceptions of college readiness. These interviews, along with the researcher's reflective journal, allowed for the triangulation of data regarding perceptions of college readiness academically, emotionally, and personally. Recommendations were provided for educators as they focus on preparing students to be college ready as they enter the collegiate setting upon graduation from high school.

Book excerpt: As K-12 systems throughout the country work to create Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs that will provide students with post-secondary skills and competencies to succeed in the workforce, many CTE students may be inadvertently denied the opportunity to also become college ready upon graduation. Focusing on high school CTE coursework deemed to be less academically rigorous, can limit the college readiness rates for CTE concentrators both in admittance and success thereafter. Utilizing Dewey and Prosser’s historical perspectives related to vocational education, current college and career readiness research, and nascent literature on college and career ready indicators, the purpose of this explanatory qualitative case study was to try to understand how adult aged students who graduated from the CTE course of study perceived their preparation for college and career readiness. This study had a sample size of three subjects per state (California, Illinois, and Texas) for a total of nine adult participants who graduated from high school and concentrated in CTE by completing two or more courses in a career or technical education pathway. Using surveys and interviews, the design of this study captured vivid details through the words and actions of the participants to explore and explain the relationship between aspects of their scholastic experiences and their perceived readiness. The findings revealed that that where participants went to school, the quality of the CTE program, and expertise of the adults involved made the greatest differences in participant perceptions of readiness-- superseding all other factors including geography, race, age, and gender. The findings from this study may have significant academic, social, and systemic implications as the belief that college and career readiness are one in the same prevails when driven by quantitative data points. The voices from the field are telling us otherwise.

This fact suggests that in order for students to be prepared to enter the world of work they must possess the competencies and skills needed to be successful. This study explores student's perceptions of their career readiness development in relation to their engagement with career resources and programming. A mixed methods approach was used to assess undergraduate seniors at a four-year public institution. This study provides insight regarding which of the eight competencies as defined by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) students feel they have the most development in preparation for their future career paths. The findings reveled that students that utilized career services during their senior year felt more confident in their career readiness skill development. This survey has important implications for career offices that want to assess programming and services to develop a competency-based framework.

Book excerpt: This mixed methods study evaluated the perceptions, performance and retention of students participating in the inaugural year of a living-learning program designed to support the needs of underprepared students of color. A survey was distributed to 1,004 FTFT students (N = 278) taking first-year English followed by a focus group (N = 9) to further understand program participant experiences. Institutional data were used to analyze student performance and retention across three comparison groups. This student support program was designed to close the performance and persistence gap for underprepared students of color living in residence at a medium sized university in the California Central Valley. Program participants reported frequent use of professional academic advising and major advising, which had a positive effect on student performance. Utilization of support services, including the writing center, disability resources, peer mentoring, was high among program participants, a positive outcome from program participation. Results of the study indicate the program was successful in closing the gap between students participating in the program and comparable students not participating in the program. Students participating in the program reported higher rates of satisfaction with their support program compared to other students participating in programs without a residential component. Findings indicate faculty mentoring had a positive outcome on student success. Understanding program design and outcomes can inform practitioners of effective Student Affairs and Academic Affairs partnerships with positive impacts to students’ performance and decisions to persist.

In this environment, WorkKeys has emerged as a set of assessments that could respond to the needs of both employers and educators and serve as an indicator to test takers of their readiness for further education or a career. In Alaska, state policymakers selected WorkKeys for use with high school juniors in an effort to measure both college and career readiness, and statewide testing was implemented in the fall of 2010. While past studies involving WorkKeys have focused on assessment results related to workforce development, academic indicators, or demographic variables, the purpose of this study was to describe the college and career readiness perceptions of high school juniors related to the WorkKeys Reading for Information, Locating Information, and Applied Mathematics assessments. A survey administered to 178 urban high school juniors at the time they received their WorkKeys results gathered student perceptions of the WorkKeys assessments in general as well as perceptions of college and career readiness. The key findings of this study were that student perceptions of college and career readiness were much higher than the results of the assessments indicated, and students found value in using WorkKeys results for college and career planning. This suggested the assessment results would be useful in career development interventions with students. This was the first year of mandatory WorkKeys assessments in the state and further study is recommended to gather rural student perceptions, further explore factors that students believe make the assessments useful, and determine the influence of the assessments and related interventions on academic self-efficacy.

More specifically, students lack college-ready literacy skills, an important skill to access multiple disciplines. With the adoption of the Common Core State Standards and its goal of career and college readiness for all students, it is crucial to examine how high school teachers are understanding and implementing college-readiness standards. Furthermore, if there is a gap in perception of college readiness standards between high school instructors and college instructors, it is important to find out what high school teachers define as college preparatory instruction. Using a phenomenological approach to understand the lack of college-readiness for students, teachers at independent charter high schools were interviewed and some observed to explore teachers' perceptions of college-ready literacy. The study had several significant findings: teachers' background impact their perceptions of their students' college-ready needs; teachers support Common Core but new standards do not prepare poor students for college; teachers believe student apathy, not their curriculum, is to blame for lack of college-readiness; teachers believe a college-ready model limits their students' post-secondary options; and teachers are not thinking about students attending community college when thinking about college-readiness.
