The No Child Left Behind Act mandated that by school year 2013-2014, all students in public schools across the nation are to perform at the proficient level or higher in math. The specific problem addressed in the present study was low measures of students' math achievement in one Mississippi school district. Prior research suggested that math anxiety was a major factor that influenced students' math performances. Hypothesis 1 for this study stated there is a statistically significant negative relationship between seventh grade students' math anxiety scores and their math achievement scores. Hypothesis 2 stated there is not a statistically significant difference in measures of math anxiety between 7th grade boys and girls. Hypothesis 3 stated there is not a statistically significant difference in measures of math anxiety between Black and White 7th grade students. To test hypothesis 1, a correlation coefficient was computed using the Pearson Product-Moment Coefficient, also known as Pearson r. To test hypotheses 2 and 3, a t-Test was used to determine whether differences between the means for math anxiety for the two samples were significant. The results of this study indicate that math anxiety and math achievement are negatively related. As math anxiety increased, measures of math achievement decreased. The results of this study also suggest that math anxiety is a general concern for all students, in that there were no differences in measures of math anxiety between boys and girls or Black students and White students. It is very important that teachers take the time to identify students who have math anxiety so they can assist the students by implementing strategies and techniques to eliminate math anxiety for those students who may benefit with higher math achievement.

Book excerpt: Research studies generally focus on mathematics achievement in college across various ethnic and gender subpopulations and have suggested that various factors such as mathematical ability, persistence, anxiety, attitudes, backgrounds, and exposure have been explanatory factors of mathematics achievement. This study explores nontraditional associating factors for the accruement of mathematical skills during the first year of college, including the role of factors pertaining to academic and social involvement, student study behavior, student perceptions of the quality of teaching, financial support, and awareness of prejudice. It involved testing a model of mathematics gain on a nationally representative sample of first-year college students by both gender and ethnicity. Results indicate that although many of the factors tested contributed to math gains for the entire sample, there were many marked differences when analyzed by gender or ethnicity. Measures of commitment and enrollment in higher level mathematics courses was found to best explain gains in mathematics. An interesting link between gains with full-time enrollment and commitment to completing the degree was also found. Another finding was that an environment perceived to be free of racial and gender related prejudices had positive implications toward mathematical gains for most students. Contains 50 references. Book excerpt: A convenience sample of 123 Hispanic/Latino students from a predominantly Hispanic/Latino South Texas community college was used to determine if gender and/or journal-writing had any effects on mathematics anxiety or achievement. Eight sections of college-algebra courses were administered the Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale (MARS) to determine levels of mathematics anxiety and the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) to determine levels of mathematical achievement. Results of the study suggest that journal-writing decreases levels of mathematics anxiety among students. In addition, the study suggests that males and females do not differ in terms of mathematical achievement. These finding are consistent with previous studies. However, the study also suggested that males and females report the same levels of mathematics anxiety and that journal-writing does not increase mathematical achievement. This is in contrast to previous published studies.
