Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Using transition theory, this study explored the influence of high school transition programs relative to coping abilities and student success. Student success was defined as grade point averages, attendance rates, and disciplinary referrals. The study included 194 ninth grade students who participated in one of three transition programs (formal, informal, or no transition program) in high schools within the same school district in the southeast region of the United States. Students' perceptions of their coping resources as defined by Schlossberg's four S's were measured using the modified Transition Guide Questionnaire. Results of the study found no significant differences among the means for GPAs, attendance rates, and disciplinary referrals of ninth grade students who participated in the three types of transition programs. Implications of these results are discussed relative to suggestions for future research efforts and for secondary educators implementing transition programs to improve overall student success for ninth grade students' transitioning to high school.

Book excerpt: Every school year, many U.S. students prepare to make the transition from being a middle school student to becoming a high school student. School transitions happen regularly and can be considered predictable. As students transition to high school, there are more challenges such as school work and peer influence. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the perceptions of students who participate in a transition program as they transition from middle school to high school. Also, this study explored the perceptions of teachers who participated in the transition programs. The population of this study consisted of students who were enrolled in a rural school district, which has a total student population of 500, in South Carolina who have participated in a transition program. The sample of this study was purposeful sampling of eight students who have participated in a transition program, as well as a purposeful sample of five staff who have worked with students in the transition program. An overall conclusion of the findings revealed the students enjoyed the transition program as it provided additional resources for students and access to additional clubs that provided structure and the ability to develop connections with peers. The staff found the transitional program beneficial to all students to help improve student success. Recommendations for future research include conducting all interviews in person, interviewing students and staff who have not participated in the transition program, and interviewing principals and superintendents. Program directors' should develop a curriculum plan that students will follow and schools should seek funding to assist with proving transportation to students to attend the transitional program.

Identifying the perceived transition strategies from high school administrators and feeder middle school administrators could inform districts of the research foundation and professional development needed for the implementation of impactful transition strategies to help all students successfully transition from middle to high school. This study explored transition problems from middle to high school; essential components related to attendance, behavior, and academic achievement; and successful transition programs. Qualitative data were collected from face-to-face interviews using open-ended questions and were analyzed by the researcher to identify emerging themes. Several themes emerged from the data that helped identify the transition strategies high school and feeder middle school administrators perceived impact student attendance, behavior, and academic achievement. The study provided a connection between related literature and the study’s findings. The study’s findings indicated that high school administrators perceived summer transition camps, clear and consistent communication, and providing students with support from trusted adults impact student transition related to student attendance, behavior, and academic achievement. Middle school administrators perceived having advisory to communicate expectations, positive reinforcement, and strong instruction prepares students for the transition from middle to high school.

The authors argue that the relationship, often complex, between what schools provide in the way of preparation, and the ways in which students take up what is on offer, is the crucial nexus for understanding the experience of transitions by young people, and for enhancing that experience. With a host of case studies of transition policies themselves, as well as evaluative data on how they were received by the school leavers whom they were designed for, this valuable addition to the educational literature deserves to be read by all those with roles in preparing the young for their journey into a complex adult world full of pitfalls as well as opportunity.
