Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this jOint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 40 (thesis year 1995) a total of 10,746 thesis titles from 19 Canadian and 144 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 40 reports theses submitted in 1995, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: NASA, the FAA, the Department of Defense, the National Center for Atmospheric Research and NOAA are developing techniques for retrieving cloud microphysical properties from a variety of remote sensing technologies. The intent is to predict aircraft icing conditions ahead of aircraft. The Mount Washington Icing Sensors Project MWISP), conducted in April, 1999 at Mt. Washington, NH, was organized to evaluate technologies for the prediction of icing conditions ahead of aircraft in a natural environment, and to characterize icing cloud and drizzle environments. April was selected for operations because the Summit is typically in cloud, generally has frequent freezing precipitation in spring, and the clouds have high liquid water contents. Remote sensing equipment, consisting of radars, radiometers and a lidar, was placed at the base of the mountain, and probes measuring cloud particles, and a radiometer, were operated from the Summit. NASA s Twin Otter research aircraft also conducted six missions over the site. Operations spanned the entire month of April, which was dominated by wrap-around moisture from a low pressure center stalled off the coast of Labrador providing persistent upslope clouds with relatively high liquid water contents and mixed phase conditions. Preliminary assessments indicate excellent results from the lidar, radar polarimetry, radiosondes and summit and aircraft measurements. Icing remote-sensing system development requires consideration of the operational environment, the meteorological environment, and the technology available. Operationally, pilots need unambiguous cockpit icing displays for risk management decision-making. Human factors, aircraft integration, integration of remotely sensed icing information into the weather system infrastructures, and avoid-and-exit issues need resolution. An icing remote-sensing system detects cloud and precipitation liquid water, drop size, and temperature. An algorithm is needed to convert these conditions into icing potential estimates for cockpit display. Specification development requires that magnitudes of cloud microphysical conditions and their spatial and temporal variability be understood at multiple scales. The core of an icing remote-sensing system is the technology that senses icing microphysical conditions. Radar and microwave radiometers penetrate clouds and can estimate liquid water and drop size. Airport-based radar or radiometers are the most viable near-term technologies. A radiometer that profiles cloud liquid water, and experimental techniques to use radiometers horizontally, are promising. The most critical operational research needs are to assess cockpit and aircraft system integration, develop avoid-and-exit protocols, assess human factors, and integrate remote-sensing information into weather and air traffic control infrastructures. This report reviews operational, meteorological, and technological considerations in developing the capability to remotely map in-flight icing conditions from the ground and from the air.

This report describes the methods used in the recalibration, including the procedure used to establish a uniform icing cloud and the use of a standard icing blade technique for measurement of liquid water content. The instruments and methods used to perform the droplet size calibration are also described. The liquid water content/droplet size operating envelopes of the icing tunnel are shown for a range of airspeeds and compared to the FAA icing certification criteria. The capabilities of the IRT to produce large droplet icing clouds is also detailed.

Book excerpt: A series of passes on 6 December 1979 through multilayered-supercooled stratiform and stratocumulus clouds by the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory's instrumented C-130E cloud physics research aircraft is used to evaluate a Rosemount Ice Detector. The response of the detector to icing conditions is compared with measurements from a J-W liquid water content meter and the Knollenberg Axial Scattering Spectrometer Probe (ASSP). A procedure to adjust for zero drift of the J-W instrument is developed. Comparison of liquid water measurements from the J-W and from the ASSP indicate that these data are highly correlated and similar in magnitude. A procedure for extracting useful information from the Rosemount Ice detector has been developed. The icing conditions in the cloud systems studied are typical of the range of conditions in winter stratiform clouds. Liquid water (LWC) values of 0.3 g/cu m and median volume diameters of 15 micrometers were most frequently observed. The results of the analysis show that the Rosemount Ice Detector is a sensitive indicator of the fluctuations of liquid water in clouds with LWC not exceeding 0.8 g/cu m -3.

Book excerpt: Aviation weather forecasters are still greatly challenged to forecast aviation weather hazards for large areas of atmosphere with few in-situ observations and little detailed information from which to work. Forecasters generally lack sufficient guidance to assist them in the prediction of icing occurrences or intensity. In-flight aircraft icing remains a significant aviation hazard. Icing intensity is related to the rate of accretion as well as the aircraft type and the icing's effects on aircraft flight performance. Icing regions currently can only be identified from subjective reports made by aircraft pilots (PIREPs). The severity of aircraft icing is found to be quite sensitive to temperature, liquid water content, and droplet size distribution along the flight path within the icing cloud. The difficulty of their direct measurement and the variability of these factors with altitude, position, and time, coupled with variable aircraft sensitivities, make forecasting and identifying icing environments quite difficult With the advent of the next generation of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES), additional spectral channels with improved ground resolution are available for use in a wide variety of research applications. One important outcome of applied research based on improved GOES-8 imager products is analysis technique developments that will lead to better forecasts of hazardous aircraft flying conditions.

Book excerpt: This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) provides a comprehensive overview of primary water content measurement instrumentation, for both facility-based icing research and in-flight icing research, over the range of commonly used aircraft certification icing envelopes. It includes information on the theory of operation of the instruments, system errors and limitations, and practical considerations when using them for cloud characterization. This document does not address other icing cloud measurements of interest, such as particle sizing, or measurement of phenomena such as snow, sleet, or hail. The need for a single, comprehensive document providing guidance on instrumentation that measures liquid, ice, and total water content in supercooled, mixed-phase, and glaciated clouds was identified. This document would eliminate duplication of effort as the information appears sporadically in several other SAE documents. This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) is intended to be the definitive source for such information.
