This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of key voyaging manuscripts has contributed to the flourishing of enduring and prolific worldwide scholarship across numerous fields. These navigators and their texts were instrumental in spurring on further exploration, annexation and ultimately colonisation of the pacific territories in the space of only a few decades. This series will present new sources and primary texts in English, paving the way for postcolonial critical approaches in which the reporting, writing, rewriting and translating of Empire and the ‘Other’ takes precedence over the safeguarding of master narratives. Each of the volumes contains an introduction that sets out the context in which these voyages took place and extensive annotations clarify and explain the original texts. The translated accounts of voyages undertaken by foreign vessels abounded in an era when they encouraged not only competitive geopolitical initiatives but also commercial enterprises throughout Europe, resulting in a voluminous textual corpus. However, French merchant-seaman Etienne Marchand’s journal of his voyage round the world in 1790-1792, encompassing an important visit to the Marquesas Archipelago during his first crossing of the Pacific, remained unpublished until 2005 and has only now been made available in English. The second volume of this series comprises an annotated translation in English of this document.

Each of the volumes contains an introduction that sets out the context in which these voyages took place and extensive annotations clarify and explain the original texts. The first volume makes available Samuel Wallis’ logs of the Dolphin’s voyage 1766-68 in their original form for the first time. Captain Samuel Wallis was the first Englishman to come across the Tuamotus and the Society Isles in the South Pacific, specifically Tahiti. His writings predate the available textual sources by Louis-Antoine de Bougainville, the logs of the Spanish voyages and James Cook — whose text Wallis’ prefigures. The three logs attest to the very first encounter between Europeans and Tahitians, but until now comparatively little research has been conducted on the more elaborate second volume and none on the first. The Polynesian archipelagos grew into objects of discourse over the years and Wallis' logs may very well be located at the heart of these evocative constructs.

Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. Delve into what it was like to live during the eighteenth century by reading the first-hand accounts of everyday people, including city dwellers and farmers, businessmen and bankers, artisans and merchants, artists and their patrons, politicians and their constituents. Original texts make the American, French, and Industrial revolutions vividly contemporary. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Excerpt: ... in having so good a prospect in this exigence of preventing such evils as might, in all likelihood, have ensued. The chief thing that encouraged me to make an attempt at Chiloet was to get such an additional supply of provisions as should (in case the coasts were already alarm'd) enable us to retire to some obscure unfrequented Island, there to remain till the Spaniards should imagine that we had abandoned their seas, and then to come upon them again when they had not the least apprehensions of being molested by us. Saturday, November 28, 1719. At 6 in the morning the Teats of Cucao on the Ifland oiChiloe bore E. N. E. And at noon, the Northernmost part of Chiloe bore N. E, distant 4 leagues, at the fame time Latitude fe r observation 41 deg. 40 min. South. Chap. III. Arrival at the Island of Chiloe, on the Coast of Chili. ONI) AT, November 30, 1712. We enter'd the channel, between the Continent of Chili and the Island of of Chiloe, and stood in for the harbour under French Colours, with intent to surprize and attack the towns of Chacao and Calibuco. But when we came into the channel, our Pilot seem'd to be as great a stranger to it as myself, and the wind begining to blow fresh, and rainy thick weather coming on, I anchor'd at 10 in the morning in 13 fathom, between the point of Carelmapo and a small Istand call'd Tedro Nunez. Immediately after we had come to, the windward tide made out with a prodigious rapidity, which instantly caused a great sea, and the wind increasing, made the channel all about us appear like one continued breach. In the mean time our ship laid a great strain on her cable, which parted at z in the afternoon. We could have no hopes of recovering our anchor, because the buoy had been stav'd and sunk an hour or two...
