Book excerpt: As the data rate demands of the cellular users increase, together with their number, it is expected that unprecedented capacity demands should be met in wireless networks in the forthcoming years. However, the energy consumption to meet these rates is expected to increase exponentially, according to trends. This can become a serious issue for both the environment, due to CO2 emissions, and the operators, which will have to pay more for electricity. Hence, several energy-efficient solutions have been proposed, such as multiple antenna systems, dynamic spectrum allocation, heterogeneous networks, and Network Coding, to name a few. Based on the above, the aim of this thesis to propose low-complexity and energy-efficient physical layer-based solutions compared to the already existing approaches, without sacrificing the quality of performance. More specifically, the focus is on the technologies of Spatial Modulation and Analog Network Coding. Both schemes offer the so-called multiplexing gain, which means that multiple streams can be transmitted without sacrificing resources, such as bandwidth. As far as Spatial Modulation is concerned, Spatial Modulation-based schemes are proposed that are more energy efficient than state-of-the-art technologies. Regarding Analog Network Coding, we study its implementation in relay-based scenarios and how it compares in terms of energy efficiency with conventional protocols, such as the time-division multiple access protocol. From the obtained results, the conclusion that can be drawn is that depending on the scenario both Spatial Modulation and Analog Network Coding can provide significant energy gains compared to existing technologies without sacrificing performance.

We focus on the problem of energy aware network coding. In particular, we investigate practical energy efficient network code design for wireless body area networks (WBAN). We first consider converge-cast in a star-shaped topology, in which a central base station (BS), or hub, manages and communicates directly with a set of nodes. We then consider a wireless-relay channel, in which a relay node assists in the transmission of data from a source to a destination. This wireless relay channel can be seen as a simplified extended star network, where nodes have relay capabilities. The objective is to investigate the use of network coding in these scenarios, with the goal of achieving reliability under low-energy and lower-power constraints. More specifically, in a star network, we propose a simple network layer protocol, study the mean energy to complete uploads of given packets from the nodes to the BS using a Markov chain model, and show through numerical examples that when reception energy is taken into account, the incorporation of network coding offers reductions in energy use. The amount of achievable gains depends on the number of nodes in the network, the degree of asymmetry in channel conditions experienced by different nodes, and the relative difference between transmitting and receiving power at the nodes. We also demonstrate the compatibility of the proposed scheme with the IEEE 802.15.6 WBAN standard by describing ways of incorporating network coding into systems compliant to the standard. For a wireless relay channel, we explore the strategic use of network coding according to both throughput and energy metrics. In the relay channel, a single source communicates to a single sink through the aid of a half-duplex relay. The fluid flow model is used to describe the case where both the source and the relay are coding, and Markov chain models are proposed to describe packet evolution if only the source or only the relay is coding. Although we do not attempt to explicitly categorize the optimal network coding strategies in the relay channel under different system parameters, we provide a framework for deciding whether and where to code, taking into account of throughput maximization and energy depletion constraints.

Book excerpt: The rapid growth of wireless industry opens the door to several use cases such as internet of things and device-to-device communications, which require boosting the reliability and the spectral efficiency of the wireless access network, while reducing the energy consumption at the terminals. The vast spectrum available in millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequency band is one of the most promising candidates to achieve high-speed communications. However, the propagation of the radio signals at high carrier frequencies suffers from severe path-loss which reduces the coverage area. Fortunately, the small wavelengths of the mmWave signals allow packing a large number of antennas not only at the base station (BS) but also at the user terminal (UT). These massive antenna arrays can be exploited to attain high beamforming and combining gains and overcome the path-loss associated with the mmWave propagation. In conventional (fully digital) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) transceivers, each antenna is connected to a specific radio-frequency (RF) chain and high resolution analog-to-digital-converter. Unfortunately, these devices are expensive and power hungry especially at mmWave frequency band and when operating in large bandwidths. Having this in mind, several MIMO transceiver architectures have been proposed with the purpose of reducing the hardware cost and the energy consumption.Fully connected hybrid analog and digital precoding schemes were proposed in with the aim of replacing some of the conventional RF chains by energy efficient analog devices. These fully connected mapping requires many analog devices that leads to non-negligible energy consumption. Partially connected hybrid architectures have been proposed to improve the energy efficiency of the fully connected transceivers by reducing the number of analog devices. Simplifying the transceiver's architecture to reduce the power consumption results in a degradation of the attained spectral efficiency.In this PhD dissertation, we propose novel modulation schemes and massive MIMO transceiver design to combat the challenges at the mmWave cellular systems. The structure of the doctoral manuscript can be expressed asIn Chapter 1, we introduce the transceiver design challenges at mmWave cellular communications. Then, we illustrate several state of the art architectures and highlight their limitations. After that, we propose scheme that attains high-energy efficiency and spectrum efficiency. In chapter 2, first, we mathematically describe the state of the art of the SM and highlight the main challenges with these schemes when applied at mmWave frequency band. In order to combat these challenges (for example, high cost and high power consumption), we propose novel SM schemes specifically designed for mmWave massive MIMO systems. After that, we explain how these schemes can be exploited in attaining energy efficient UT architecture. Finally, we present the channel model, systems assumptions and the transceiver devices power consumption models.In chapter 3, we consider single user SM system. First, we propose downlink (DL) receive SM (RSM) scheme where the UT can be implemented with single or multiple radio-frequency chains and the BS can be fully digital or hybrid architecture. Moreover, we consider different precoders at the BS and propose low complexity and efficient antenna selection schemes for narrowband and wideband transmissions. After that, we propose joint uplink-downlink SM scheme where we consider RSM in the DL and transmit SM (TSM) in the UL based on energy efficient hybrid UT architecture.In chapter 4, we extend the SM system to the multi-user case. Specifically, we develop joint multi-user power allocation, user selection and antenna selection algorithms for the broadcast and the multiple access channels.Chapter 5 is presented for concluding the thesis and proposing future research directions.

Wireless technologies are expected to provide ubiquitous access to information and to support a broad range of emerging applications, such as multimedia streaming and video conferencing. The need to support the explosive growth in wireless traffic requires new tools and techniques that maximize the spectrum efficiency, as well as minimize delays and power consumption. This dissertation aims at novel approaches for the design and analysis of efficient and reliable wireless networks. We plan to propose efficient solutions that leverage user collaboration, peer-to-peer data exchange, and the novel technique of network coding. Network coding improves the performance of wireless networks by exploiting the broadcast nature of the wireless spectrum. The new techniques, however, pose significant challenges in terms of control, scheduling, and mechanism design. The proposed research will address these challenges by developing novel network controllers, packet schedulers, and incentive mechanisms that would encourage the clients to collaborate and contribute resources to the information transfer. Our contributions can be broadly divided into three research thrusts: (1) stochastic network coding; (2) incentive mechanism design; (3) joint coding and scheduling design. In the first thrust we consider a single-relay network and propose an optimal controller for the stochastic setting as well as a universal controller for the on-line setting. We prove that there exist an optimal controller for the stochastic setting which is stationary, deterministic, and threshold type based on the queue length. For the on-line setting we present a randomized algorithm with the competitive ratio of e/(e-1). In the second thrust, we propose incentive mechanisms for both centralized and distributed settings. In the third thrust, we propose joint coding and scheduling algorithms for time-varying wireless networks. The outcomes of our research have both theoretical and practical impact. We design and validate efficient algorithms, as well as provide insights on the fundamental properties of wireless networks. We believe these results are valuable for the industry as they are instrumental for the design and analysis of future wireless and cellular networks that are more efficient and robust. Space-time coding is an effective transmit diversity technique to combat fading in wireless communications. Space-time codes are a highly bandwidth-efficient approach to signalling within wireless communication that takes advantage of the spatial dimension by transmitting a number of data streams using multiple co-located antennas. There are various approaches to the coding structures, including space-time trellis coded modulation, space-time turbo codes and also layered architectures. The central issue in all these various coding structures is the exploitation of multipath effects in order to achieve very high spectral efficiencies. The spectral efficiencies of traditional wireless systems range between 1-5bps/sec/Hz but by using space-time techniques spectral efficiencies of 20-40bps/sec/Hz have been possible. Hence, space-time coding enables an increase in capacity by an order of magnitude.; This is the main reason why space-time codes have been included in the standards for the third generation wireless communication systems and ultimately why Space-time Coding will be in great demand by individuals within industry and academia. Book excerpt: In this thesis, space-time block codes originally developed for multiple antenna systems are extended to cooperative multi-hop networks. The designs are applicable to any wireless network setting especially cellular, adhoc and sensor networks where space limitations preclude the use of multiple antennas. The thesis first investigates the design of distributed orthogonal and quasi-orthogonal space time block codes in cooperative networks with single and multiple antennas at the destination. Numerical and simulation results show that by employing multiple receive antennas the diversity performance of the network is further improved at the expense of slight modification of the detection scheme. The thesis then focuses on designing distributed space time block codes for cooperative networks in which the source node participates in cooperation. Based on this, a source-assisting strategy is proposed for distributed orthogonal and quasi-orthogonal space time block codes. Numerical and simulation results show that the source-assisting strategy exhibits improved diversity performance compared to the conventional distributed orthogonal and quasi-orthogonal designs. Motivated by the problem of channel state information acquisition in practical wireless network environments, the design of differential distributed space time block codes is investigated. Specifically, a co-efficient vector-based differential encoding and decoding scheme is proposed for cooperative networks. The thesis then explores the concatenation of differential strategies with several distributed space time block coding schemes namely; the Alamouti code, square-real orthogonal codes, complex-orthogonal codes, and quasiorthogonal codes, using cooperative networks with different number of relay nodes. In order to cater for high data rate transmission in non-coherent cooperative networks, differential distributed quasi-orthogonal space-time block codes which are capable of achieving full code-rate and full diversity are proposed. Simulation results demonstrate that the differential distributed quasi-orthogonal space-time block codes outperform existing distributed space time block coding schemes in terms of code rate and bit-error-rate performance. A multidifferential distributed quasi-orthogonal space-time block coding scheme is also proposed to exploit the additional diversity path provided by the source-destination link. A major challenge is how to construct full rate codes for non-coherent cooperative broadband networks with more than two relay nodes while exploiting the achievable spatial and frequency diversity. In this thesis, full rate quasi-orthogonal codes are designed for noncoherent cooperative broadband networks where channel state information is unavailable. From this, a generalized differential distributed quasi-orthogonal space-frequency coding scheme is proposed for cooperative broadband networks. The proposed scheme is able to achieve full rate and full spatial and frequency diversity in cooperative networks with any number of relays. Through pairwise error probability analysis we show that the diversity gain of the proposed scheme can be improved by appropriate code construction and sub-carrier allocation. Based on this, sufficient conditions are derived for the proposed code structure at the source node and relay nodes to achieve full spatial and frequency diversity. In order to exploit the additional diversity paths provided by the source-destination link, a novel multidifferential distributed quasi-orthogonal space-frequency coding scheme is proposed. The overall objective of the new scheme is to improve the quality of the detected signal at the destination with negligible increase in the computational complexity of the detector. Finally, a differential distributed quasi-orthogonal space-time-frequency coding scheme is proposed to cater for high data rate transmission and improve the performance of noncoherent cooperative broadband networks operating in highly mobile environments. The approach is to integrate the concept of distributed space-time-frequency coding with differential modulation, and employ rotated constellation quasi-orthogonal codes. From this, we design a scheme which is able to address the problem of performance degradation in highly selective fading environments while guaranteeing non-coherent signal recovery and full code rate in cooperative broadband networks. The coding scheme employed in this thesis relaxes the assumption of constant channel variation in the temporal and frequency dimensions over long symbol periods, thus performance degradation is reduced in frequencyselective and time-selective fading environments. Simulation results illustrate the performance of the proposed differential distributed quasi-orthogonal space-time-frequency coding scheme under different channel conditions.

Book excerpt: This thesis investigates both theoretical and practical aspects of the design and analysis of modern error-control coding schemes, namely low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes and rateless codes for unequal error protection (UEP). It also studies the application of modern error-control codes in efficient data dissemination in wireless ad-hoc and sensor networks. Two methodologies for the design and analysis of UEP-LDPC codes are proposed. For these proposed ensembles, density evolution formulas over the binary erasure channel are derived and used to optimize the degree distribution of the codes. Furthermore, for the first time, rateless codes that can provide UEP are developed. In addition to providing UEP, the proposed codes can be used in applications for which unequal recovery time is desirable, i.e., when more important parts of data are required to be recovered faster than less important parts. Asymptotic behavior of the UEP-rateless codes under the iterative decoding is investigated. In addition, the performance of the proposed codes is examined under the maximum-likelihood decoding, when the codes have short to moderate lengths. Results show that UEP-rateless codes are able to provide very low error rates for more important bits with only a subtle loss in the performance of less important bits. Moreover, it is shown that given a target bit error rate, different parts of the information symbols can be decoded after receiving different numbers of encoded symbols. This implies that information can be recovered in a progressive manner, which is of interest in many practical applications such as media-on-demand systems. This work also explores fundamental research problems related to applying error-control coding such as rateless coding to the problem of reliable and energy-efficient broadcasting in multihop wireless ad-hoc sensor networks. The proposed research touches on the four very large fields of wireless networking, coding theory, graph theory, and percolation theory. Based on the level of information that each node has about the network topology, several reliable and energy-efficient schemes are proposed, all of which are distributed and have low complexity of implementation. The first protocol does not require any information about the network topology. Another protocol, which is more energy efficient, assumes each node has local information about the network topology. In addition, this work proposes a distributed scheme for finding low-cost broadcast trees in wireless networks. This scheme takes into account various parameters such as distances between nodes and link losses. This protocol is then extended to find low-cost multicast trees. Several schemes are extensively simulated and are compared.

Book excerpt: With the rapid growth of wireless technologies, devices and mobile applications, the quest of high throughput and ubiquitous connectivity in wireless communications increases rapidly as well. Relaying is undoubtedly a key concept to provide coverage extension and capacity increase in wireless networks. Network coding, which allows the intermediate nodes to share their computation capabilities in addition to their resource and their power, has grabbed a significant research attention since its inception in information theory. It has become an attractive candidate to bring promising performance improvement, especially in terms of throughput, in relay-based cellular networks. Substantial research efforts are currently focused on theoretical analysis, implementation and evaluation of network coding from a physical layer perspective. The question is, what is the most efficient and practical way to use network coding in wireless relay-based networks, and whether it is beneficial to exploit the broadcast and multiple-access properties of the wireless medium to perform network coding. It is in such a context, that this thesis proceeds. In the first part of the thesis, the problem of Joint Network-Channel Coding (JNCC) for a Multiple Access Relay Channel (MARC) is investigated in the presence of multiple access interferences and for both of the relay operating modes, namely, half-duplex and full-duplex. To this end, three new classes of MARC, referred to as Half-Duplex Semi-Orthogonal MARC (HD-SOMARC), Half-Duplex Non-Orthogonal MARC (HD-NOMARC), and Full-Duplex Non-Orthogonal MARC (FD-NOMARC) have been introduced and studied. The relaying function in all of the classes is based on a Selective Decode-and-Forward (SDF) strategy, which is individually implemented for each source, i.e, the relay forwards only a deterministic function of the error-free decoded messages. For each class, an information-theoretic analysis is conducted, and practical coding and decoding techniques are proposed. The proposed coding schemes, perform very close to the outage limit for both cases of HD-SOMARC and HD-NOMARC. Besides, in the case of HD-NOMARC, the optimal allocation of the transmission time to the relay is considered. It is also verified that exploiting multiple access interferences, either partially or totally, results in considerable gains for MARC compared to the existing interference-avoiding structures, even in the case of single receive antenna. In the second part of the thesis, the network model is extended by considering multiple relays which help multiple sources to communicate with a destination. A new class of Multiple Access Multiple Relay Channel (MAMRC), referred to as Half-Duplex Semi-Orthogonal MAMRC (HD-SOMAMRC) is then proposed and analyzed from both information theoretic and code design perspective. New practical JNCC schemes are proposed, in which binary channel coding and non binary network coding are combined, and they are shown to perform very close to the outage limit. Moreover, the optimal allocation of the transmission time to the sources and relays is considered. Finally, in the third part of the thesis, different ways of implementing cooperation, including practical relaying protocols are investigated for the half-duplex MARC with semi-orthogonal transmission protocol and in the case of JNCC. The hard SDF approach is compared with two Soft Decode and Forward (SoDF) relaying functions: one based on log a posterior probability ratios (LAPPRs) and the other based on Mean Square Error (MSE) estimate. It is then shown that SDF works well in most of the configurations and just in some extreme cases, soft relaying functions (based on LAPPR or MSE estimate) can slightly outperform the hard selective one.

Book excerpt: The imperfections of the propagation channel due to channel fading and the self-generated noise from the RF front-end of the receiver cause errors in the received signal in electronic communication systems. When network coding is applied, more errors occur because of error propagation due to the inexact decoding process. In this dissertation we present a system called Partial Network Coding with Cooperation (PNC-COOP) for wireless ad hoc networks. It is a system which combines opportunistic network coding with decode-and-forward cooperative diversity, in order to reduce this error propagation by trading off some transmission degrees of freedom. PNC-COOP is a decentralized, energy efficient strategy which provides a substantial benefit over opportunistic network coding when transmission power is a concern. The proposed scheme is compared with both opportunistic network coding and conventional multi-hop transmission analytically and through simulation. Using a 3-hop communication scenario, in a 16-node wireless ad hoc network, it is shown that PNC-COOP improves the BER performance by 5 dB compared to opportunistic network coding. On average, it reduces the energy used by each sender node around 10% and reduces the overall transmitted energy of the network by 3.5%. When retransmission is applied, it is shown analytically that PNC-COOP performs well at relatively low to medium SNR while the throughput is comparable to that of opportunistic network coding. The effectiveness of both opportunistic network coding and PNC-COOP depends not only on the amount of network coding but also on other factors that are analyzed and discussed in this dissertation.
