Book excerpt: We examine the importance of a firm's own R&D activity and intra-sectoral spillovers on the decision to export and the export intensity using firm level panel data for Spain for the period 1990-98. Own R&D activity is found to be an important determinant of export activity. There is little evidence to suggest that Spanish firms benefit from spillovers of the exporting activity of others. However, there is evidence that R&D spillovers exert positive effects on firms' export ratios. We find a larger marginal impact of R&D spillovers on export intensity of firms exporting to other OECD countries than those exporting to non-OECD nations.

In addition to "productivity", firms are also heterogeneous in their "caliber"--The ability to produce quality using fewer fixed inputs. Compared to single-attribute models of firm heterogeneity emphasizing either productivity or the ability to produce quality, our model provides a more nuanced characterization of firms' exporting behavior. In particular, it explains the empirical fact that firm size is not monotonically related with export status: there are small firms that export and large firms that only operate in the domestic market. The model also delivers novel testable predictions. Conditional on size, exporters are predicted to sell products of higher quality and at higher prices, pay higher wages and use capital more intensively. These predictions, although apparently intuitive, cannot be derived from single-attribute models of firm heterogeneity as they imply no variation in export status after size is controlled for. We find strong support for the predictions of our model in manufacturing establishment datasets for India, the U.S., Chile, and Colombia.

Book excerpt: This dissertation aims to offer new insights into the understanding of the exporting behaviour of heterogeneous firms in China. It consists of four core studies about export-related topics at the firm level. The first study is an investigation of how agglomeration of exporters as a key external force affects export participation and export intensity of firms while controlling for firm heterogeneity. The results show the presence of export spillover effects which have an inverted-U shape relationship with the export performance of firms. It is also found that export spillovers only benefit the firms within the same industry located in the same region. The second core chapter is a survival analysis of export durations after firms' initial attempt of exporting. It is found that Chinese firms faced high risk of ceasing to export in their starting years. However, as expected, firms that are larger, more productive, and more export-intensive or funded by foreign investors are more likely to survive longer in the export market. The third study is an analysis of China's high-tech exports, in which the role of innovation is addressed. It is shown that foreign-invested firms dominate the country's high-tech exports which do not rely on indigenous innovation activities. This confirms the prior finding that the success of Chinese high-tech exports was attributed to the processing trade rather than the R&D efforts and hence technological progress. The fourth study focuses on the wage premium in the exporting sector. It is found that an export wage premium is not a prevailing phenomenon in China. It depends on a firm's ownership, export-orientation and location. Overall, the findings from this dissertation not only enhance our understanding of the export behaviour of Chinese manufacturing firms but also provide some useful policy implications for both the business community and policy makers.

Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1970, analyses the factors affecting the export performance of selected firms from particular UK industries in the period 1958-66. The study was designed to test at the level of the firm and industry the hypothesis that, in the short run, variations in exports are a function of the pressure of domestic demand. It also obtained valuable information on the factors affecting the export performance and behaviour of firms.

Book excerpt: In the last four decades the world has been significantly impacted by globalization and rapid technological changes. This in turn had major effects on the global economy. Several developing and socialist economies that earlier followed closed door and import substitution policies started to open up their economies to world trade and investments. Some such countries, as India, managed to achieve a degree of economic prosperity over the last few years after opening up their economy. The analyses in this book show that there are significant benefits from international trade and investment to emerging economies that possess critical-level initial conditions in technology, infrastructure, and ease of doing business, and also have friendly policies. Focusing on Indian firms, the book spans the period from the pre-reform era to the post-reform era, when the market was responding to policy reforms and global market dynamics. The reforms, it argues, resulted in positive outcomes of increased outward orientation and annual growth rates. The book also comments on the economic and institutional factors that change over time, locally as well as globally, and affect the behaviour of firms and industries.

Book excerpt: In many countries, a sizable share of international trade is carried out by intermediaries. While large firms tend to export to foreign markets directly, smaller firms typically export via intermediaries (indirect exporting). I document a set of facts that characterize the dynamic nature of indirect exporting using firm-level data from Vietnam and develop a dynamic trade model with both direct and indirect exporting modes and customer accumulation. The model is calibrated to match the dynamic moments of the data. The calibration yields fixed costs of indirect exporting that are less than a third of those of direct exporting, the variable costs of indirect exporting are twice higher, and demand for the indirectly exported products grows more slowly. Decomposing the gains from indirect and direct exporting, I find that 18 percent of the gains from trade in Vietnam are generated by indirect exporters. Finally, I demonstrate that a dynamic model that excludes the indirect exporting channel will overstate the welfare gains associated with trade liberalization by a factor of two.

Using aggregated cross-country firm-level data covering 43 mostly developing economies, this paper estimates the marginal importance of the impact of various intermediate input trade cost barriers, namely tariffs, non-tariff barriers (NTBs) and services barriers, on firms' export behavior. In a cross-sectoral setting, this paper takes the firm's export performance in goods as a central focus to study the effects of these different trade barriers through the exporting firm's choice of use of intermediate inputs. The results show that the most significant trade barriers on inputs that impede export performance in developing countries are mainly NTBs and restrictions of services.
