This book was released on 1992 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Prospective Principals' Program at Stanford University, students are engaged in problem-based learning (PBL), a cooperative, small-group approach providing opportunities to resolve problems likely to confront real-world professionals. To illustrate PBL's background and rationale, chapter 1 briefly describes how the topic of teacher selection might be introduced using traditional, case-method, and PBL approaches. Chapter 2 focuses on the students' role and how instructors can minimize the frustration and difficulties students experience in Stanford's PBL curriculum. Chapter 3 describes a field test of the teacher selection project, focusing on valuable lessons for student and instructor. Chapter 4 explains the instructor's role in PBL and how to deal with potential challenges arising while implementing a PBL project. The fifth chapter contains six student essays to illustrate what students report learning about leadership and various administrative skills. Chapter 6 describes possible obstacles hindering PBL implementation and outlines a strategy for overcoming these impediments. The last chapter focuses on future challenges, including explicating student-centered learning, facilitating administrators' lifelong learning, conducting research on PBL effectiveness, and exploring other PBL contexts for educating administrators. Appendices provide a description of Stanford's PBL program, samples of problem-stimulated learning projects, and a project checklist. (50 references) (MLH)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a must-read book for any teachers of math." -Jo Boaler, Professor of Mathematics Education at Stanford University and author of Mathematical Mindsets Numerical fluency is about understanding Numerical fluency is about understanding, not memorization. It comes over time as students engage in active thinking and doing, not endless worksheets and timed tests. Classroom instruction and materials, however, often don't feel aligned with these realities. In Developing Numerical Fluency, Patsy Kanter and Steven Leinwand take a fresh look at a commonly-asked question: "How do I teach number facts so my students know them fluently?" They apply their decades of experience teaching mathematics to rethinking effective fluency instruction. Classroom-tested ideas you can use right away Each chapter introduces ideas, techniques, and strategies that contribute to meaningful fluency for all students. You'll find: pivotal understandings that illuminate what contributes to real numerical fluency six instructional processes that support lasting fluency development classroom structures and activities for building fluency in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division suggestions for creating a school-wide culture of numerical fluency. Patsy and Steve remind us that, "Students do not develop numerical fluency by memorizing and regurgitating rules." But many of us learned mathematics in exactly this way, making shifting our instruction challenging. Developing Numerical Fluency provides just the right support, offering big ideas for rethinking instruction paired with classroom-tested activities you can use right away.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no respect for mere age in Science or Technology. Yet the cen tenary of the discovery, by the third Lord Rayleigh, that elastic waves can be guided by a surface, is memorable for the contradictions which it encompasses: Rayleigh's assessment of his classic 1885 paper as a rather minor mathematical development with a potential value only in seismology on the one hand; on the other the rediscovery of the subject in a totally that of electronic signal processing - which has led to its different fiel- explosive growth over the last twenty years. The new surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices have proved to be per electronic components. Today almost all television receivers con vasive tain one or more SAW filters, sophisticated radars depend on SAW signal processing, and SAW devices have been incorporated in ultra-high perfor mance opto-electronic systems. With the objective of surveying these developments and attempting to predict those that can be foreseen, as well as marking the centenary of Lord Rayleigh's discovery, The Rank Prize Funds' Committee for Opto Electronics organised a symposium in London, in July 1985. It was held in the Royal Institution, London, where Rayleigh himself once worked and often lectured. The present volume is the tangible outcome of the symposium, In which international experts survey.ed their various fields, and presented the most exciting recent developments.

These cutting-edge techniques cover mining from curated databases, identifying novel receptors by high throughput screening, molecular methods to identify mRNA encoding receptors, radioligand binding assays and their analysis, quantitative autoradiography, and imaging receptors by positron emission tomography (PET). Highlights include phenotypic characterization of receptors in knockout mice, imaging receptors using green fluorescent protein and fluorescent resonance energy transfer, and quantitative analysis of receptor mRNA by TaqMan PCR. These book equips the researcher with techniques for exploring the unprecedented number of new receptor systems now emerging and the so-called "orphan" receptors whose activating ligand has not been identified.
