The development of many tools used to manipulate such ultracold samples and the rapid progress on understanding these systems will ultimately lead to great technological advances. The work described in this thesis contributes to this worldwide effort and here we present experiments which investigate the properties and behaviour of ultracold atoms.

This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of the International School of Quantum Electronics 27th course on Bose Einstein Condensates and Atom Lasers, October 19-24, 1999, Erice, Italy. Since the experimental demonstration of Bose Einstein Condensation in dilute atomic gases there has been an explosion of interest in the properties of this novel macroscopic quantum system. The book covers the methods used to produce these new samples of coherent atoms, their manipulation and the study of their properties. Emphasis is given to the anticipated development of new types of sources, which more and more resemble traditional types of lasers. Because of recent new applications and increasing demand for lasers, sensors and associated instrumentation, the chapters also cover current developments in the basic techniques, materials and applications in the field of the generation of coherent atoms.

This book was released on 2020-09-26 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advancing the experimental study of superfluids relies on increasingly sophisticated techniques. We develop and demonstrate the loading of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) into nearly arbitrary trapping potentials, with a resolution improved by a factor of seven when compared to reported systems. These advanced control techniques have since been adopted by several cold atoms labs around the world. How this BEC system was used to study 2D superfluid dynamics is described. In particular, negative temperature vortex states in a two-dimensional quantum fluid were observed. These states were first predicted by Lars Onsager 70 years ago and have significance to 2D turbulence in quantum and classical fluids, long-range interacting systems, and defect dynamics in high-energy physics. These experiments have established dilute-gas BECs as the prototypical system for the experimental study of point vortices and their nonequilibrium dynamics. We also developed a new approach to superfluid circuitry based on classical acoustic circuits, demonstrating its conceptual and quantitative superiority over previous lumped-element models. This has established foundational principles of superfluid circuitry that will impact the design of future transport experiments and new generation quantum devices, such as atomtronics circuits and superfluid sensors.

Download or read book Experiments with Bose-Einstein Condensates in a Double-well Potential written by Yong-Il Shin and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) Doubly quantized vortices were topologically imprinted in spinor condensates and the stability of the vortex state was investigated. The decay of a doubly-quantized vortex core into two singly-quantized vortex cores was observed using a tomographic imaging technique. The characteristic time scale of the splitting process was found to be longer at higher atom density.

Book Synopsis 87Rubidium Bose-Einstein Condensates by : Erik William Streed
Download or read book 87Rubidium Bose-Einstein Condensates written by Erik William Streed and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis details construction of a new apparatus for the production of 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensates and a subsequent quantum Zeno effect experiment. An experimental apparatus for producing large Bose-Einstein condensates of 87Rb is described in detail. A high flux thermal atomic beam is decelerated by a Zeeman slower and is then captured and cooled in a magneto-optical trap. The atoms are then transfered into a cloverleaf style Ioffe-Pritchard magnetic trap and cooled to quantum degeneracy with radio frequency induced forced evaporation. Condensates containing up to 20 million atoms can be produced every few minutes. The quantum Zeno effect is the suppression of transitions between quantum states by frequent measurement. Oscillation between two ground hyperfine states of a magnetically trapped 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensate, externally driven at a transition rate WR, was substantially suppressed by destructively measuring one of the levels with resonant optical scattering. While an ideal continuous measurement will stop the transition, any real measurement method will occur at a finite rate. The suppression of the transition rate in the two level system was quantified for pulsed measurements with a time between pulses t and weak continuous measurements with a scattering rate y. We observe that the weak continuous measurements exhibit the same suppression in the transition rate as the pulsed measurements when ySt = 3.60(0.43). This is in agreement with the previously predicted value of 4. Increasing the measurement frequency suppressed the transition rate to 0.005WR.
Book Synopsis Bose-Einstein Condensation in Atomic Gases by : Società italiana di fisica
Download or read book Bose-Einstein Condensation in Atomic Gases written by Società italiana di fisica and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although first proposed by Einstein in 1924, Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in a gas was not achieved until 1995 when, using a combination of laser cooling and trapping, and magnetic trapping and evaporation, it was first observed in rubidium and then in lithium and sodium, cooled down to extremely low temperatures. This book brought together many leaders in both theory and experiment on Bose-Einstein condensation in gases. Their lectures provided a detailed coverage of the experimental techniques for the creation and study of BEC, as well as the theoretical foundation for understanding the properties of this novel system. This volume provides the first systematic review of the field and the many developments that have taken place in the past three years.
