Book excerpt: The results of the research re-ported in this work show that tunable gap flux qubits have a potential for building quantum registers. Cavities coupled to flux qubits can be used for in-formation storage and transfer between qubits. SFS π-shifters provide a simple approach to bias multi-qubit circuits. A possibility to change the qubit resonance frequency while preserving qubit coherence enables implementation of switchable coupling between qubits and cavities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date description of the Josephson effect, a topic of never-ending interest in both fundamental and applied physics. In this volume, world-renowned experts present the unique aspects of the physics of the Josephson effect, resulting from the use of new materials, of hybrid architectures and from the possibility of realizing nanoscale junctions. These new experimental capabilities lead to systems where novel coherent phenomena and transport processes emerge. All this is of great relevance and impact, especially when combined with the didactic approach of the book. The reader will benefit from a general and modern view of coherent phenomena in weakly-coupled superconductors on a macroscopic scale. Topics that have been only recently discussed in specialized papers and in short reviews are described here for the first time and organized in a general framework. An important section of the book is also devoted to applications, with focus on long-term, future applications. In addition to a significant number of illustrations, the book includes numerous tables for comparative studies on technical aspects.

Book excerpt: Furthermore, this experiment is the first demonstration of a violation of Bell's inequality in a solid state system, and the first demonstration in a macroscopic quantum system. It therefore adds valuable supporting evidence that the new ideas proposed by quantum mechanics are indeed valid across different quantum systems and cannot be explained by a deterministic alternative theory.

Book excerpt: Quantum sensing is a vast and emerging field enabling in-situ studies of quantum systems and hence the development of quantum hybrid systems. This work creates the fundament of direct superconducting-magnetic hybrid systems by developing a local microwave sensing scheme and studying the influence of a static magnetic field on a superconducting qubit. Finally, a proof-of-principle hybrid system is demonstrated, which opens the path towards superconducting-magnetic quantum circuits.

Book excerpt: Quantum mechanics, the subfield of physics that describes the behavior of very small (quantum) particles, provides the basis for a new paradigm of computing. First proposed in the 1980s as a way to improve computational modeling of quantum systems, the field of quantum computing has recently garnered significant attention due to progress in building small-scale devices. However, significant technical advances will be required before a large-scale, practical quantum computer can be achieved. Quantum Computing: Progress and Prospects provides an introduction to the field, including the unique characteristics and constraints of the technology, and assesses the feasibility and implications of creating a functional quantum computer capable of addressing real-world problems. This report considers hardware and software requirements, quantum algorithms, drivers of advances in quantum computing and quantum devices, benchmarks associated with relevant use cases, the time and resources required, and how to assess the probability of success.

Book excerpt: The thesis gives the first experimental demonstration of a new quantum bit (“qubit”) that fuses two promising physical implementations for the storage and manipulation of quantum information – the electromagnetic modes of superconducting circuits, and the spins of electrons trapped in semiconductor quantum dots – and has the potential to inherit beneficial aspects of both. This new qubit consists of the spin of an individual superconducting quasiparticle trapped in a Josephson junction made from a semiconductor nanowire. Due to spin-orbit coupling in the nanowire, the supercurrent flowing through the nanowire depends on the quasiparticle spin state. This thesis shows how to harness this spin-dependent supercurrent to achieve both spin detection and coherent spin manipulation. This thesis also represents a significant advancement to our understanding and control of Andreev levels and thus of superconductivity. Andreev levels, microscopic fermionic modes that exist in all Josephson junctions, are the microscopic origin of the famous Josephson effect, and are also the parent states of Majorana modes in the nanowire junctions investigated in this thesis. The results in this thesis are therefore crucial for the development of Majorana-based topological information processing.

Book excerpt: In disordered solids, two-level atomic-tunneling systems are present in large quantity. Only recently, superconducting qubits opened a door for a detection and individual coherent manipulation of such microscopic quantum systems. We succeeded to tune the resonance frequencies of these systems by applying external strain on the qubit chip. Moreover, we observed and analyzed the interaction between two coupled tunneling systems.

Book excerpt: This Fermi Summer School of Physics on "Experimental Quantum Information and Computing" represents a primer on one of the most intriguing and rapidly expanding new areas of physics. In this part, the interest in quantum information (QI) science is due to the discovery that a computer operating on quantum mechanical principles can solve certain important computational problems exponentially faster than any conceivable classical computer. But this interest is also due to the interdisciplinary nature of the field: the rapid growth is attributable, in part, to the stimulating confluence of researchers and ideas from physics, chemistry, mathematics, information theory, and computer science. Physics plays a paramount role in QI science, as we realize that computing is itself a physical process subject to physical laws. The incredible growth of classical computers and information processors in the 20th century stems from Turing's notion that a computer is independent of the physical device actually being used; be they relays, vacuum tubes, or semiconductor transistors. As we strive to build useful quantum information processors into the 21st century, we thus look for any physical system that obeys the laws of quantum mechanics, from single photons and atoms to quantum superconducting devices. These Fermi lectures take us on a journey through these and other promising current experimental candidates for QI processing, spanning quantum optics and laser physics, atomic and molecular physics, physical chemistry, and condensed-matter physics. While this broad coverage of experimental physics represents a challenge to the student, such an appreciation of these fields will be critical in the future success of quantum technology. Indeed, the most exciting feature of QI science is that the technology ultimately leading to a quantum processor is likely presently unknown.

The main idea of the author is to present the reader with as many useful results as possible by the simplest means, rather than to demonstrate theoretical muscle. This is why almost all the topics requiring elaborate techniques for their analysis are shifted to the ends of the chapters and the most complex chapters, to the end of the book. Topics which are of relatively minor importance for further discussion are mainly presented in the form of 'problems' at the end of the sections." -- from Preface.

Book excerpt: Josephson phase-quantum-bits, (& ldquo;qubits & rdquo;), together with superconducting resonators, comprise the essential quantum elements in a state-of-the-art quantum processor (QuP). A QuP can be used to exploit quantum mechanics to find the prime factors of composite numbers by running Shor's algorithm[57]. In this thesis, I describe the first solid-state demonstration of a compiled version of Shor's algorithm. To meet this challenge, I designed a QuP so that I could map the problem of factoring the number N = 15 onto a quantum circuit that is compatible with our technological capabilities. The QuP is composed of nine quantum elements: four phase qubits and five superconducting coplanar waveguide (CPW) resonators. Using this device, I ran a three-qubit complied version of Shor's algorithm and successfully found the prime factors 48% of the time (compared to the ideal success rate of 50 %). In addition, the QuP produced coherent interactions between five quantum elements, and bi- and tripartite entanglement, which was verified via quantum state tomography (QST). Scaling up to nine quantum elements and performing these experiments represent key milestones to realizing a quantum computer. Continued improvements in the superconducting qubit coherence times and more complex circuits should provide the resources necessary to factor larger composite numbers and run more intricate quantum algorithms in the near future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During this grant, we have invented, designed and successfully operated a new type of readout for charge-phase superconducting qubits. This new readout is based on the bifurcation of an RF-driven Josephson junction inserted in the loop of a split Cooper pair box. When the amplitude of the RF drive is in the vicinity of the bifurcation points a small change in the effective critical current of the junction is amplified into a large phase change in the reflected signal. The performance reached by the device is in agreement with theoretical predictions. The speed of this readout is unprecedented: we measure in 20ns the critical current increment corresponding to the transition between the 2 states of the qubit. The repetition rate is 10Mz. We have performed a series of experiments showing that the amplification mechanism behaves as expected. No quasiparticles are produced during the readout and the back-action on the qubit when the readout is OFF is minimal. We have performed decoherence measurements at dilution refrigerator temperatures on the quantronium qubit integrated with RF readout. These measurements involve all possible 1-qubit gate operations. Compared with the DC readout method we have gained in repetition rate (factor of 100), signal-to-noise ration on all coherence signals (factor of 10) but most importantly, on readout fidelity which now attains more than 60% (compared to 15%). This last improvement is very important for showing the entanglement produced by two-bit gate operations. The T1 has also been improved by 250%. We still have comparable T2 as before but we suspect this is due to insufficient filtering on the listening lines of our measurement apparatus and this problem is technically solvable. In parallel with this work on readout and decoherence of the quantronium qubit, we have designed a new 2-bit gate based on capacitive coupling between qubits and worked out the complete protocol of pulses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: We describe a variety of numerical models to characterize the behavior of several types of underdamped Josephson systems. We first discuss a stack of small junctions in a single mode resonant cavity. Our results show self-induced-resonant-steps in the current voltage (IV) curve. These steps represent a coherent phase locking between the junctions in the stack and the resonant cavity. Next we generalize these results to treat a single long junction coupled to a single mode resonant cavity. Our numerical results show that if the electromagnetic fields of the cavity mode are spatially periodic, we again see steps in the IV curve and furthermore, for sufficiently large coupling, the cavity frequency is shifted by coupling to the long junction. We then turn to some properties of single junctions in the quantum regime where the phase/number non-commutation is important. This quantum regime is crucial to all proposals to use such junctions as solid state quantum bits (qubits). We show that such qubits, when subjected to external a.c. perturbations, exhibit not only the expected Rabi oscillations but also multiphoton transitions between the quasi-bound states of the junction. We also consider the behavior of Josephson junction ladders in an external magnetic field. For magnetic fields equal to 1/n flux quanta per plaquette, we observe a periodic vortex lattice; here n is an integer evenly divisible into the total number of plaquettes, N, in the ladder. When a single fluxon is added to such a ladder, we show that it does not enter that ladder as a single unit of flux. Instead, it produces n fractional vortices. Our final chapter is motivated by some dramatic recent experiments on Josephson junctions formed between high temperature cuprate superconductors and low temperature s-wave superconductors. These experiments are intended to test phase sensitivity, i.e., the dependence of the measured critical current on an external magnetic field. We consider a ladder array of alternating 0 and [pi] junctions with open boundary conditions in the presence of an external magnetic field to model this zigzag junction. Our calculations show many of the salient features seen in the experiments.
