Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hatching and Rearing of Chicks First, mix the gasolene and cresol together and then slowly stir in the plaster of paris until all the liquid is taken up. Use enough of the plaster of paris to absorb the liquid and no more. Spread the resulting brownish powder on sheets of paper to dry and then store away in covered cans. To use, take a large baking powder can, punch the cover full of holes with a six-penny nail and fill the can with the powder. This makes a good Sifter to thoroughly sift the powder into the feathers around the vent and under the wings, while an assistant is holding the hen up by the shanks. Work the powder into the feathers with the fingers. This is one of the best powders the writer has ever used. It is also one of the cheapest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chicks: Hatching and Rearing; A Manual of Dependable Instruction in Incubating, Brooding, Feeding, Housing and Developing Winners and Layers; Fattening, Killing and Marketing Broilers and Roasting Chickens Success in hatching and rearing the chicks is absolutely necessary for profitable poultry keeping. The fancier, the egg farmer and the market poulterer must produce every year a certain greater or less number of chickens. The fancier must have cockerels and pullets for exhibition and sale, the egg man must have pullets to lay, the poulterer must have tender broilers and roasters for his trade and all must replace the stock sold, or aged beyond its usefulness. This young stock is required to be good or it will not satisfactorily and profitably serve its various purposes; the mere fact that it has been brought from the shell and made to live until it is time to market it, or to maturity, as the case may be, is no guaranty that it will sooner or later return a fair rate of interest on its cost. Thousands of chicks are hatched each year and placed in brooders, which, either because of weakness in the parent stock or improper incubation, are practically worthless, so far as their ability to make good growth and development is concerned. Other thousands which leave the shell strong and healthy are spoiled in the rearing, so that they reach the profit-turning age in such condition that they are unfit for the purposes of their owners. The only chick that is profitable is the one well hatched and well reared, so that it possesses health and vigor. This indicates the necessity of proper incubation, healthful brooding, correct feeding and intelligent care. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Incubation, Natural and Artificial: With Illustrations and Descriptions of Incubators, Modes of Constructing Brooders, and the Best Methods of Rearing Chickens Artificially HE word incubate was formerly used in a more limi Tted sense than it is at the present time. Nine people out of ten will say that incubation is hatching, and ask If it is not hatching, what is it? It appears that, strictly speaking, the sitting on eggs for the purpose of furnishing heat is incubation; not the mere hatching. But the word has been appropriated as the best to express the whole Operation of sitting on eggs, or giving them the required heat to effect the hatching, whether in the natu ral way, by the hen, goose, turkey, etc., or by the use of contrivances that furnish artificial heat with boxes, drawers, lamps and regulators. A word must in the long run be made to answer the purpose of those who use it, even if the' Latin derivation is ignored. Words get their meaning changed or extended, in time. Man invents some new method, and uses an Old word to express his idea. When the novice desires to learn all that can be learned about incubation he may well commence at the beginning and consider the best methods pf obtaining eggs that will hatch when placed under favorable conditions.4 [nc uba tion. This is not the proper place to enter upon a discussion of the relative merits of natural and artificial incubation. It need only be said that as a matter of fact few who have tried artificial incubation attempt to do any pedigree poultry breeding work on an ex tensive scale using hens as incubators. If the hens don't get enough lime, the eggs won't hatch; or those that do hatch the chicks will weigh less. As it traces the rise and fall of Gallus domesticus from the jungles of ancient India to the assembly-line hatcheries sprawled across modern America, this original, frequently astounding book passes along a trove of knowledge and lore about everything from the chicken's biology and behavior to its place in legend and mythology. The book includes lively discussions of the chicken's role in literature and history, the cruel attractions of cockfighting, the medicinal uses of eggs and chicken parts, the details of the egg-laying process, the basics of the backyard coop, recipes, and much more. Entertaining and insightful, The Chicken Book will change the way we regard this too often underappreciated animal.

All over the world poultry keepers are waking to the fact that some hens lay more than others; that it costs no more to hatch, rear and care for those which lay more; and that they want this sort in their flocks.
