Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimentation and Measurement Correspondingly, most research workers have little interest in measurements except as they serve the purpose of supplying needed information. The work of making measurements is all too often a tiresome and exacting task that stands between the research worker and the verification or disproving of his think ing on some special problem, It would seem ideal to many research workers if they had only to push a button to get the needed data. The experimenter soon learns, however, that measurements are subject to errors. Errors in measurement tend to obscure the truth or to mislead the experimenter. Accordingly, the experimenter seeks methods to make the errors in his measure ments so small that they will not lead him to incorrect answers to scientific questions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Measurements Our intention in writing this book was not to give an account of physical laboratory methods in general, but to describe a limited number of carefully chosen exercises such as we have found in our experience to be suitable for the laboratory work of students who have had a fair course in General College Physics. The descriptions of the exercises will usually fit apparatus and conditions of considerable diversity, but many practical details have been included where experience has shown that they are necessary. Other instructors who may adopt the book will probably find some of the exercises unsuited to their classes, but the list is sufficiently extensive to afford a considerable variety of selection. The descriptions of apparatus are intended to be read by the student with the apparatus before him. Hence elaborate illustrations have been thought unnecessary. For an extended account of certain special topics, such as the theory of the balance and the construction of galvanometers, references to other works have been given. Usually several text-books and special treatises have been referred to at the beginning of the account of an experiment. It is assumed that each student will have one of the text-books and that some of the special works will be found in the reference room of the laboratory. While the reference is generally to the latest edition (at the present date, 19 lo), those who have different editions will have no difficulty in finding the passages referred to. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Physical Measurements The close attention to every detail and the exercise of deliberate judgment which are required in every experiment if a worthy result is to be obtained, tend to produce a habit of accuracy which is of inestimable value. This training is obtained only when every effort is made to get the very best result that the time allowed for the experiment and the apparatus employed will permit. Before observations on any experiment are begun, the theory of the experiment should be mastered as well as the functions of the various parts of the apparatus which is to be used. Without such study, necessary observations may be omitted or taken in the wrong way, and apparatus whose value depends upon its accuracy may be injured permanently because of a lack of knowl edge about its delicate parts. Furthermore it is important to determine the degree of accuracy of every result which is obtained. Errors - For various reasons it is impossible to obtain the absolute value of an unknown quantity. Any measurement is affected, to a greater or less extent, by errors which may be classified under the two heads: constant and accidental. As examples of constant errors may be mentioned the following. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Measurements in Magnetism and Electricity The student who makes these experiments should keep careful notes, adding to the apparatus recommended any thing that may seem desirable, varying the manipulation, and drawing such conclusions as the experiment teaches. He should also keep a full set of notes on observations made. The accuracy and fullness of these notes will be an index of the benefit that he is receiving from the work. N o attempt has been made to cover more than a small part of the field; but the belief is entertained that a thorough familiarity with the principles and experiments outlined in this book will provide a good foundation for a more extended study, or for the practical application of these principles to the requirements of practice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Course of Experiments in Physical Measurement, Vol. 4 of 4: Appendix for the Use of Teachers The first requisite for a course in elementary Physical Measurement is a well lighted and uniformly heated room, with the ordinary precautions to secure good ventilation. Experience has shown that these advantages cannot practically be obtained in basements, however suitable the latter may be for certain scientific purposes. The first floor of a building, properly supported by brick pillars to prevent vibration, has undoubted advantages for a course of measurements. The use of iron in construction should be in so far as possible avoided on account of its magnetic influence. If the room above a physical laboratory is to be occupied, there should be an empty space between the floor of that room and the laboratory ceiling. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Psychology: A Manual of Laboratory Practice On the average, we can still hear a tone of so-and-so many vibrations; on the average, we can distinguish two weights if they differ by such-and-such an amount. The question which the quantitative experiment answers is, therefore, some variant of the question 'How much?' Notice, however, that this is not the question asked of consciousness. That question is always the one or other of the two just mentioned: Present or absent? and Same or different? Here, then, is a second difference between the qualitative and the quantitative experiment. The former, aiming at description, comes to an end when introspection has made its report; the latter, aiming at measurement, subjects the results of introspection to mathematical treatment. The experiments are complementary, each sacrificing something and each gaining something. The qualitative experiment shows us all the detail and variety of the mental life, and in so doing forbids us to pack its results into formulas; the quantitative experiment furnishes us with certain uniformities of the mental life, neatly and summarily expressed, but for that very reason must pass unnoticed many things that a qualitatively directed introspection would bring to light. The Quantitative Experiment in Practice. - In general, the rules for the conduct of a quantitative experiment are the same as those fora qualitative experiment (vol. I., xiii. f.). There are, however, in practice, certain well-marked differences between the two types of experiment. (1) In the first place, the quantitative experiment demands much more 'outside' preparatory work than does the qualitative. Most, if not all, of the reading done in preparation for the experiments of vol. I. could be done within the laboratory. This is not the case with the experiments that you are now to perform. The quantitative experiment sums up, in a single representative value, the results of a large number of observations. It is clear, then, that the conditions of observation must be the same throughout: otherwise the results will not be comparable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Physics This book is the result of an experience of nearly ten years in teaching Experimental Physics to classes consisting of students who were preparing for college and of students who were not preparing for college. Most of the experiments are quantitative, some are qualitative. Qualitative experiments serve to stimulate the interest of the student, and to prepare his mind for a better understanding of quantitative experiments. A beginner in Physics should know something about that which he is expected to measure before he attempts to measure it. This knowledge is readily acquired from qualitative experiments. To show the aim of the work, I have put at the beginning of each experiment a concise statement, not of the result, but of the object of the experiment; and at the end of each experiment, questions for the purpose of helping the student unfold the result of the experiment from his record. The general results of the experiments are enforced by numerous examples, many of which have been drawn from Harvard Examination Papers. The experiments are often stepping-stones, each to the next.
