Book excerpt: One promising approach for future quantum networks is the combination of strings of trapped ions as quantum-information processors with entangled photon pairs produced by spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) to establish quantum communication links between distant processing units. This work reports on experiments using a hybrid quantum-optics set-up, comprising two separate linear ion traps and a resonant SPDC photon-pair source. It demonstrates the controlled interaction of single entangled photon pairs with a single trapped 40Ca+ ion. Preparing the ion as polarization selective absorber in the main polarization bases allows for the reconstruction of the biphoton quantum state, manifesting the photon entanglement in the absorption process. Beyond that, the thesis documents the implementation of additional experimental tools enabling quantum state transfer experiments from photons to single ions. A dedicated narrowbandwidth laser system is set up, laser sequences are developed for state discrimination and state rotations of ion qubits, and for the creation and characterization of coherent superposition states, of particular importance for state-transfer schemes. Finally, detection efficiencies of single Raman photons emitted by an ion are characterized with a well controlled single-photon source, and absorption probabilities of single photons are determined with a calibrated laser beam, providing precise values to assess efficiencies for different transfer scenarios.

This thesis focuses on the photon as a principal resource to perform quantum information tasks and on schemes to imprint quantum bits onto its various degrees of freedom. Its weak coupling to the environment makes the photon an ideal carrier to securely transmit information by quantum cryptographic protocols. Moreover, efficient implementations of quantum computing using solely linear optics have been proven. Unfortunately, scalability is not easily achieved by a purely photonic approach since the generation of indistinguishable single photons from multiple emitters remains a difficult task. Thus, proposals for more complex quantum networks suggest an architecture with single photons as information carriers between atomic ensembles that act as storage and processing nodes. Computations including a limited number of qubits, however, may be performed by the linear optics scheme. The thesis starts with the generation and characterization of single-photon states, using a source based on a single optically pumped quantum dot. The capability of these states to implement a quantum algorithm using linear optics and single-photon interference is experimentally demonstrated for the first time. Error correction makes the interferometric setup robust against phase-noise. After successful realization of this proof-of-principle experiment, attention is drawn to the need of plug-and-play single-photon sources. Especially quantum key distribution, the most advanced quantum information technology to date which has even found its way into commercial devices, requires compact and low-cost non-classical light sources.Therefore, a single-photon source based on electrically pumped quantum dots is presented that exhibits unmatched spectral purity and single-photon statistics. Results towards the realization of quantum networks are presented in the following chapters, covering the generation of narrow-band single photons which can efficiently couple to atomic resonances. Photons with a spectral width of less than 3 MHz are created by ultra-bright cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric down-conversion, and their quantum statistics is studied in detail. A setup for time-bin encoding is demonstrated, capable of imprinting quantum information onto these narrow-band single photons. This thesis concludes with slow-light experiments in atomic ensembles as a model system for atom-photon interaction on the single-photon level. The described experiments demonstrate striking features that make the single photon one of the most remarkable physical systems for the field of quantum information.

Book excerpt: With continued development of laser-atom interaction, systems of trapped ions offer a promising platform for the realization of fault-tolerant quantum information processing (QIP). Much progress with single atomic and molecular ion qubits has been made both in theory and experiment on the fundamental building blocks for scalable QIP architectures. Nonetheless, difficulty still remains for quantum network implementation and spectroscopy protocols for atomic and molecular ions, respectively. The objective of this thesis is to design and test the ion trap integration with photon resonators, which can facilitate coherent ion-photon state transfer in quantum networks, and microwave spectroscopy for molecular ion rotational states. The first part of the thesis describes a novel planar trap design with an integrated optical cavity. Proposals for photon number memory with trapped ions are presented, and experimental implementation for single ion cavity QED is explored. In addition, a study of vacuum-induced scattering loss increase is performed for mirror coatings at several temperatures and wavelengths, from which a method of retaining cavity finesse was developed. In the second part, an experiment is proposed for microwave quantum logic spectroscopy of molecular ions. With a cavity field to facilitate entanglement between co-trapped single atomic and molecular ions, a reliable and non-destructive spectroscopy method, as well as molecular ground state cooling can be realized.

The basic background knowledge has been introduced in Chapter 1. Chapters 2-4 describe the detailed techniques used in these two experiments. In the first work, we implement a remote state preparation protocol on our single-photon orbital angular momentum (OAM) lattice state via hybrid-entanglement. Remote state preparation is a variant of quantum state teleportation where the sender knows the transmitted state. It is known to require fewer classical resources and exhibit a nontrivial trade-off between the entanglement and classical communication compared with quantum teleportation. Here we propose a state preparation scheme between two spatially separated photons sharing a hybrid-entangled polarization-OAM state. By sending one of the polarization-entangled photon pairs through Lattice of Optical Vortex prism pairs, we generate a two-dimensional lattice of spin-orbit coupled single-photons. We show that the measurement taken by an electron-multiplying intensified CCD camera on the transformed photons can be remotely prepared by the polarization projection of the other. Our protocol could have a significant impact on long-distance quantum communication with higher channel capacity and lead to more efficient and compatible quantum information processing techniques. The second experiment investigates the single-photon Talbot Effect in spin-orbit arrays. The Talbot Effect is a near-field diffraction effect, that occurs with the propagation of periodically structured waves. It has enabled several unique applications in optical metrology, image processing, data transmission, and matter-wave interferometry. We observe that upon propagation, the wavefronts of the single photons manifest self-imaging whereby the OAM lattice intensity profile is recovered. Furthermore, we show that the intensity distribution at each fractional Talbot distance is indicative of the periodic helical phase structure corresponding to a lattice of OAM states. This phenomenon is a significant addition to the toolbox of orbital angular momentum and spin-orbit techniques that are becoming increasingly important in optical implementations of quantum information.

However, at present, photon losses in the optical fiber limit communication distances to less than 150 kilometers. The quantum repeater idea allows extension of these distances. In practice, it involves the ability to store quantum information for a long time in atomic systems and coherently transfer quantum states between matter and light. Previously known schemes involved atomic Raman transitions in the UV or near-infrared and suffered from severe loss in optical fiber that precluded long-distance quantum communication. In this thesis a practical quantum telecommunication scheme based on cascade atomic transitions is proposed, with particular reference to cold alkali metal ensembles. Within this proposal, essential building blocks for a quantum network architecture are demonstrated experimentally, including storage and retrieval of single photons transmitted between remote quantum memories, collapses and revivals of quantum memories, deterministic generation of single photons via conditional quantum evolution, quantum state transfer between atomic and photonic qubits, entanglement of atomic and photonic qubits, entanglement of remote atomic qubits, and entanglement of a pair of 1530 nm and 780 nm photons. These results pave the way for construction of a realistic quantum repeater for long distance quantum communication.

Treating these topics at an introductory to intermediate level, Fast Light, Slow Light and Left-Handed Light focuses on the basic theory and describes the significant experimental progress made during the past decade. The book pays considerable attention to the fact that superluminal group velocities are not in conflict with special relativity and to the role of quantum effects in preventing superluminal communication and violations of Einstein causality. It also explores some of the basic physics at the opposite extreme of very slow group velocities as well as stopped and regenerated light, including the concepts of electromagnetically induced transparency and dark-state polaritons. Another very active aspect of the subject discussed concerns the possibility of designing metamaterials in which the refractive index can be negative and propagating light is left-handed in the sense that the phase and group velocities are in opposite directions. The last two chapters are an introduction to some of the basic theory and consequences of negative refractive index, with emphasis on the seminal work carried out since 2000.
