Little is know about these types of systems with regard to their application in seismic regions such as Alaska. The focus of this research is specifically related to use of these structures in the State of Alaska. The research included both an experimental and analytical portion. The experimental portion consisted of four full-scale sub assembly bridge bents. The current practice in Alaska, a fillet weld, was evaluated as well as two additional weld configurations. The two additional weld configurations are a complete joint penetration weld with a reinforcing fillet and a simple complete joint penetration weld. All four test units were tested under reverse cyclic loading applied by a hydraulic actuator. The analytical portion consisted of applying the concepts of direct displacement based design in order to evaluate the test results. The results of the experiments show the current practice in Alaska is not adequate for the level of seismic intensity throughout the state. The complete joint penetration weld with reinforcing fillet was able to achieve moderate displacement capacity with the possibility of being used in some of the lower seismic regions of the State. The simple complete joint penetration weld was only able to achieve a low level of displacement capacity.

Book excerpt: A series of experimental tests investigating the seismic response of reinforced concrete beam-column T-joints was recently completed at the University of California, Berkeley. The evaluated connection was representative of an interior beam- column joint from a multi-column bridge frame built in the late 1950's. Three one-third scale models, representing the as-built connection and two retrofit connections, were tested. The results of this research project are an improved understanding of the seismic behavior of lightly reinforced bridge T-joints as well as verification of a design procedure for retrofitting this type of connection.

Book excerpt: Experimental tests were conducted on seven 1/3-scale column specimens to evaluate the vulnerabilities of existing cruciform-shaped columns and to develop appropriate retrofit measures that address the identified vulnerabilities. The specimens represented both solid and split columns in the Aurora Avenue Bridge in Seattle, Washington. The as-built specimens failed at low ductility levels due to shear distress. Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) jackets with FRP inserts to anchor the jackets in the column reentrant corners along with steel confinement collars to provide confinement in the hinging regions were used to retrofit the column specimens. The retrofitted specimens developed plastic hinging in the column, with enhanced strength, energy and ductility capacities. Guidelines were presented for designing the various components of the retrofit measures.

Book excerpt: Many steel bridges have suffered severe diaphragm (cross-frame) damage during recent earthquakes around the world. The relative role played by intermediate and end-diaphragms in providing lateral load resistance, and the consequences of diaphragm damage on bridge seismic response have not been studied. These bridges are also frequently supported by seismically vulnerable non-ductile substructures whose seismic retrofit can be, in many cases, a rather costly operation. This research addresses three related issues to the seismic behavior of slab-on-girder steel highway bridges: (i) the impact of diaphragm on their seismic performance, (ii) innovative methods for their seismic retrofit and (iii) corrosion effects on the strength and ductility of their steel members. To study the first issue, research is conducted to quantitatively investigate the impact of diaphragms on the seismic response of these steel bridges. It is shown that a small end-diaphragm stiffness is sufficient to make the entire superstructure behave as a unit in the elastic range. However, a dramatic shift in seismic behavior occurs once those end-diaphragms fail, with a sizeable period elongation, considerably larger lateral displacements and higher propensity to damage due to P-$\Lambda$ effects. For seismic retrofits of these bridges, this research consists of four essential parts: development of the ductile end-diaphragm concept, development of a design procedure, a series of inelastic analyses to validate the concept, and testing of all scale models for the proposed end-diaphragms to further verify the concept and to validate the proposed detailing. First, to take advantage of the benefits granted by the presence of a steel superstructure, an innovative, economical effective and simple to implement seismic retrofit strategy, using ductile steel bridge end-diaphragms (such as shear panels, eccentrically braced frames and triangular-plate added damping and stiffness devices) has been developed. Second, a step by step design procedure for ductile end-diaphragms is proposed and potential limits of application are indicated. In the third part, the DRAIN-2DX and ADINA programs are used to conduct nonlinear inelastic analyses of these retrofitted bridges and investigate their expected seismic behavior. Test results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed ductile end-diaphragms as effective passive energy dissipation systems in slab-on-girder steel bridges. For the third issue, the effect of corrosion on the strength and ductility of steel members is also studied to investigate the long-term performance of the ductile end-diaphragms proposed here. To generate preliminary data, a few rusted pieces taken from an existing steel bridge have been subjected to numerous cycles of alternating plasticity in flexure. Specimens had up to a 60% loss of cross-sectional area due to corrosion. This limited test program revealed that, while stable hysteretic behavior comparable to that of unrusted specimen is possible, premature failure under alternating plasticity can typically develop (in spite of satisfactory ductile behavior under monotonic loading). Irregularities along the severely rusted surface apparently act as crack initiators and precipitate crack propagation throughout the section. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

Book excerpt: The use of high-strength steel reinforcement in seismic design of bridges is currently under investigation. Several benefits will come from its use, which includes a reduction in the construction time, a reduction in congestion and cost savings, among others. Lotfizadeh (2019) performed an experimental work at the University of California San Diego to study the use of large-diameter high-strength steel reinforcement in earthquake resisting bridge elements. Part of the study considered a quasi-static test of a full-scale bridge column extending into a Type II shaft (enlarged diameter shaft) all reinforced with high-strength ASTM A706 Grade 80 reinforcement. Data obtained from the study was used through this research to calibrate a detailed nonlinear finite element model. For this purpose, continuum 3D elements with fracture-plastic constitutive material law were used to represent the concrete and line elements with uniaxial constitutive materials to characterize the axial stress-strain response of high-strength steel reinforcement. Calibration of the constitutive laws with the experimental data gave a good prediction of the overall and local behavior. The analysis was able to capture the opening and closure of flexural cracks by providing a lower limit to the tensile concrete stress, with smear tension stiffening. The numerical simulation's state of the art can fit the overall response of analytical models with a pretest, but to our knowledge, the distribution of the spread plasticity is usually not addressed or shown. In this research, a comprehensive study of both responses is addressed. Even when the model captured the overall structural behavior, the spread plasticity did not match with the experimental data as well as it did with the overall response.

Book excerpt: The primary objectives of the report are to (1) provide current information on the theory and techniques for seismic analysis of highway bridges, including background material on basic structural dynamics, (2) identify the appropriate criteria necessary to decide if a bridge needs retrofitting and the type of retrofit measures to employ, and (3) demonstrate design details and installation specifications for retrofitting existing highway bridges to minimize earthquake damage. This report is in two volumes: Vol 1 "Earthquake and Structrural Analysis" Vol. 2 "Design Manual". Volume two is a design manual and contains illustrations of various retrofit concepts and specific design procedures which can be applied to existing bridges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research evaluated the seismic behavior of bridges with longitudinal joints. The experimental portion of the work consisted of ten full scale sub-assembly tests modelled after a typical as-built keyway joint. The joint was tested under pure shear to determine the joint shear-slip response and associated limit states (grout cracking, embedded rebar yielding/rupture, and girder cover concrete cracking). The analytical portion consisted of developing inelastic shear springs between girders using the response from the experiments and implementing springs into superstructure models to determine global response. In addition, moment curvature analysis was done to develop equations for nominal yield curvature of bridge superstructures. An alternative keyway connection was proposed to improve performance at the service limit state.
