Among the developed nanomaterials, nano-sized crosslinked polymeric gel particle (nanogel) has shown great potential in recovering residual oil and improving oil recovery. This dissertation carried out their potential EOR mechanisms and the synergetic effect between nanogel and low salinity water. Nanogel used in this study was synthesized through the suspension polymerization process in our lab. The morphology, size distribution, and zeta potential were studied for nanogel dispersed in brine with variable ionic strength. The injectivity of nanogel was elucidated at first to ensure their in-depth penetration ability. The oil-water interfacial tension reduction and oil-in-water emulsion stabilization were studied with three kinds of nanogel and two types of oil at various nanogel concentrations, temperatures, and brine salinities. The core flooding experiments have indicated the residual oil can be fragmented and produced out in oil-in-water emulsion. This shear-induced emulsification property denotes nanogel can significantly improve oil phase mobility, especially for heavy oil. In addition, the diameter of emulsified oil drops in the effluent is inversely proportional to the shear rate. The synergistic effect between nanogel and low salinity water was found on both wettability alteration and interfacial tension reduction. From kinetic adsorption measurements, the adsorption was driven by both van der Waals force and electrostatic attraction during nanogel transport through porous media. The limestone flooded with nanogel and low salinity water achieved a 62.4% ultimate oil recovery. These results suggest that the synergistic effect between low salinity water and nanogel offers a promising platform for enhancing oil recovery"--Abstract, page iv.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Extracting higher amounts of oil from current reservoirs is a necessity for the oil industry to enhance their profitability and sustainability. The desire to recover more oil from the existing reservoirs has led to a growing interest of nanoparticle application in enhanced oil recovery (EOR). However, most researchers have focused on the evaluation and surface modification of non-deformable nanoparticles. This dissertation evaluates the potential of deformable nanogel particles as an EOR material when they are combined with two other promising technologies - surfactant and low salinity water floodings. The particle size distribution, [zeta]-potential and interfacial tension were measured for a newly developed nanogel when dispersed in brine with different salinities. The core flooding experiments, using sandstone and carbonate rocks, have indicated the ability of nanogel-surfactant flooding to emulsify crude oil in-situ and produce it as oil-in-water emulsion. The results have also revealed that substantial oil recovery, up to 27%, beyond conventional seawater flooding can be obtained by nanogel combined with SDS injections and assisted with altering salinity and ionic content of post water injections. Surfactant injection has shown to reduce nanogel adsorption density on rock surfaces. The injectivity and plugging performance induced by nanogel injection through sandstone and carbonate reservoir rocks were elucidated to assess their potential as oil recovery improvement agents. Emulsification is believed to be a major recovery mechanism of nanogel-assisted surfactant flooding. Here, oil-in-water Pickering emulsions stabilized by nanogel and surfactants using different brine salinities, pH, homogenizing time were evaluated for the formulation of a stable oil droplets. The confocal microscopy images have shown that stable oil-in-water Pickering emulsions are formed by nanogel combined with anionic surfactant and low brine salinity. The results presented in this dissertation promote the effect of nanogel assisted-surfactant flooding combined with low salinity water as a promising method for enhancing oil recovery"--Abstract, page iv.

Book excerpt: This book covers all aspects of polymer flooding, an enhanced oil recovery method using water soluble polymers to increase the viscosity of flood water, for the displacement of crude oil from porous reservoir rocks. Although this method is becoming increasingly important, there is very little literature available for the engineer wishing to embark on such a project. In the past, polymer flooding was mainly the subject of research. The results of this research are spread over a vast number of single publications, making it difficult for someone who has not kept up-to-date with developments during the last 10 to 15 years to judge the suitability of polymer flooding to a particular field case. This book tries to fill that gap. The basic mechanisms of the process are described and criteria given where it may be employed. Basic elements of the chemistry of EOR-polymers are provided. The fundamentals of polymer physics, such as rheology, flow in porous media and adsorption, are derived. Practical hints on mixing and testing of polymers in the laboratory are given, as well as instructions for their application in the oil field. Polymer flooding is illustrated by some case histories and the economics of the methods are examined. For the essential subjects, example calculations are added. An indispensable book for reservoir engineers, production engineers and laboratory technicians within the petroleum industry.

Book excerpt: This book aims at presenting, describing, and summarizing the latest advances in polymer flooding regarding the chemical synthesis of the EOR agents and the numerical simulation of compositional models in porous media, including a description of the possible applications of nanotechnology acting as a booster of traditional chemical EOR processes. A large part of the world economy depends nowadays on non-renewable energy sources, most of them of fossil origin. Though the search for and the development of newer, greener, and more sustainable sources have been going on for the last decades, humanity is still fossil-fuel dependent. Primary and secondary oil recovery techniques merely produce up to a half of the Original Oil In Place. Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) processes are aimed at further increasing this value. Among these, chemical EOR techniques (including polymer flooding) present a great potential in low- and medium-viscosity oilfields. • Describes recent advances in chemical enhanced oil recovery. • Contains detailed description of polymer flooding and nanotechnology as promising boosting tools for EOR. • Includes both experimental and theoretical studies. About the Authors Patrizio Raffa is Assistant Professor at the University of Groningen. He focuses on design and synthesis of new polymeric materials optimized for industrial applications such as EOR, coatings and smart materials. He (co)authored about 40 articles in peer reviewed journals. Pablo Druetta works as lecturer at the University of Groningen (RUG) and as engineering consultant. He received his Ph.D. from RUG in 2018 and has been teaching at a graduate level for 15 years. His research focus lies on computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water flooding of oil reservoirs has been performed for a century in order to improve oil recovery for two reasons: (1) give pressure support to the reservoir to prevent gas production and (2) displace the oil by viscous forces. During the last 30 years, it was discovered that the wetting properties of the reservoir played a very important role for the efficiency of the water flood. Even though much work have been published on crude oil–brine–rock (CBR) interaction related to wetting properties, Professor N.R. Morrow, University of Wyoming, asked the audience the following question at the European enhanced oil-recovery (EOR) meeting in Cambridge, April 2011: Do we understand water flooding of oil reservoirs? If we are not able to explain why injection fluids of different ionic composition can have a great impact on displacement efficiency and oil recovery, the answer to Morrow’s question is NO. Researchers have to admit that we do not know the phenomena of water flooding well enough. The key to improve our understanding is to obtain fundamental chemical understanding of the CBR interaction by controlled laboratory studies, and then propose chemical mechanisms, which should be validated also from field experience. In this chapter, I have tried to sum up our experience and chemical understanding on water-based EOR in carbonates and sandstones during the last 20 years with a specific focus on initial wetting properties and possibilities for wettability modification to optimize oil recovery. Chemically, the CBR interaction is completely different in carbonates and sandstones. The proposed chemical mechanisms for wettability modification are used to explain field observations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of oil in the world economy cannot be overstated, and methods for recovering oil will be the subject of much scientific and engineering research for many years to come. Even after the application of primary depletion and secondary recovery processes (usually waterflooding), much oil usually remains in a reservoir, and indeed in some heterogeneous reservoir systems as much as 70% of the original oil may remain. Thus, there is an enormous incentive for the development of improved or enhanced methods of oil recovery, aimed at recovering some portion of this remainil)g oil. The techniques used range from 'improved' secondary flooding methods (including polymer and certain gas injection processes) through to 'enhanced' or 'tertiary' methods such as chemical (surfactant, caustic, foam), gas miscible (carbon dioxide, gas reinjection) and thermal (steam soak and drive, in-situ combustion). The distinction between the classification ofthe methods usually refers to the target oil that the process seeks to recover. That is, in 'improved' recovery we are usually aiming to increase the oil sweep efficiency, whereas in 'tertiary' recovery we aim to mobilise and recover residual or capillary trapped oil. There are a few books and collections of articles which give general overviews of improved and enhanced oil recovery methods. However, for each recovery method, there is such a wide range of interconnected issues concerning the chemistry, physics and fluid mechanics of flow in porous media, that rarely are these adequately reviewed.

Book excerpt: The global significance of oil production in the face of increasing demand for energy and its resources cannot be overemphasized. Eco-friendly and effective oil recovery techniques have been diversely implemented in addition to traditional brine imbibition into porous matrix domains aimed at displacing substantial amounts of oil towards production wells for maximum oil recovery. Be that as it may, carbonate reservoirs, which contain more than half of the global oil reserves, are characterized by heterogeneities, natural fracture networks, and oil wetness, culminating in waterflooding inefficiency. Consequently, the performance of low salinity water (LSW), nanoparticles (NPs), and surfactants (abbreviated as LNS) in their individual and combined applications for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) purposes has been highlighted in several works. Again, an emerging technique involving the alternating injection of LNS has been previously employed for carbonates; however, their implementation in fractured carbonate reservoirs (FCRs) was yet to be investigated. One of the crucial applications of NPs for incremental oil recovery is their tendency to enhance mobility control via viscosity modification. Therefore, this work probes the viscosity behavior of a solution of NPs dispersed in different ionic components of brine with increasing concentrations of the NPs. Ultimately, the understanding of crude oil-brine-rock (COBR) interactions, the viscosity behavior of the nanofluids, and the previous performances of LNS are used to effectively design suitable coreflooding experiments for examining the performance of LNS in FCRs. The applicability of LNS is first probed in spontaneous imbibition (SI) tests and subsequently implemented in dynamic imbibition experiments utilizing specific NPs and an anionic surfactant. The oil recovery results obtained are herein presented and the corresponding mechanisms are highlighted. Furthermore, owing to the successful application of LNS with the usage of anionic surfactants, this investigation is extended to include non-ionic and cationic surfactants. The sequential injection of LNS into FCRs under the same experimental conditions used in previous studies is executed for a different solution of NPs and cationic surfactants following the subjection of the injected fluids to SI tests. The painstaking analysis of the observations as well as the relevant inferences deduced is thus presented in this investigation. Overall, the suitability of the alternating injection of LNS demonstrated in this study under extremely unfavorable conditions and potential impediments to incremental oil recovery indicates that it is well-fitted for EOR in FCRs.
