Book excerpt: The aerodynamic loading on delta wings at supersonic speed was studied principally to determine the coupling and nonlinear interference effects between the pressures due to angle of attack and due to thickness. Pressure distributions on four delta wings having leading-edge sweep angles of 53, 60, and 66.6 degrees were measured at Mach numbers of 1.62, 1.93, and 2.41. Three wings had NACA 65A003 sections. The other wing had a flat upper surface and a leading-edge sweep angle of 53 degrees. At Mach numbers of 1.94 and 2.41, some of the results for this wing simulate a wing of zero thickness; the pressure distributions are compared with the pressure distributions of an NACA 65A003 section wing of the same plan form. For this comparison the pressure distributions at zero angle of attack deducted. Appreciable nonlinear interference effects are shown to exist such that the pressure distributions caused by angle of attack are not additive at test angles of attack greater than 5 degrees. These effects are shown to exist for all the NACA 65A003 section wings at all test Mach numbers, and in each case the experimental results are compared with theory.

Book excerpt: The object of the present analysis is to investigate the high-speed aerodynamic properties of a blunt delta wing at low angles of attack where the maximum lift to drag ratio occurs. Oguchi's solution of hypersonic flow over a blunt leading edge flat plate at zero incidence is extended to three dimensional delta wings at angle of attack. The shock wave shapes and pressure distributions were obtained by employing the oblique shock relations at the windward sides of the Prandtl-Meyer equations at the leeward side of the wing. The total lift and drag of the wing due to pressure and skin friction were computed by numerical integration using the IBM 7094 computer. The present calculated aerodynamic forces generally agree with the experimental data at the high supersonic Mach numbers (M approx.> or = 4) and lower thickness ratio of the wing which is a 70-degree swept slab sided delta wing with a cylindrical leading edge. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two similar tapered sweptback plan forms with the same two spanwise variations of twist have been tested in the Mach number range from 0.8 to 2.0. The test results showed, in general, rather good agreement with theoretical predictions of the incremental span loadings due to twist for zero angle of attack. The measured incremental span loadings due to twist generally diminished with increasing angle of attack through the Mach number range. At a Mach number of 0.9, the incremental loadings progressively vanished from the tip inboard with increasing angle of attack. For the highest angles of attack (about 20 degrees) at Mach number 0.9, there was no difference in the span loadings of the flat and twisted wings. At a higher supersonic speeds, a similar vanishing at the tips of the incremental loading due to twist was starting at the highest angles of attack (near 20 degrees).

Book excerpt: An experimental study was performed at supersonic speeds to measure wing and body spanwise pressure distributions on an axisymmetric-body delta wing model on which the wing vertical location on the body was systematically varied from low- to high-mounted positions. In addition, for two of these positions both horizontal and radial wing angular orientations relative to the body were tested, and roll angle effects were investigated for one of the positions. Seven different wing-body configurations and a body-alone configuration were studied. The test was conducted at Mach numbers from 1.70 to 2.86 at angles of attack from about -4 deg to 24 deg. Pressure orifices were located at three longitudinal stations on each wing-body model, and at each station the orifices were located completely around the body, along the lower surface of the right wing (looking upstream), and along the upper surface of the left wing. All pressure coefficient data are tabulated and selected samples are shown graphically to illustrate the effects of the test variables. The effects of angle of attack, roll angle, Mach number, longitudinal station, wing vertical location, wing angular orientation, and wing-body juncture are analyzed. The vertical location of the wing on the body had a very strong effect on the body pressures. For a given angle of attack at a roll angle of 0 deg, the pressures were virtually constant in the spanwise direction across the windward surfaces of the wing-body combination. Pressure-relieving, channeling, and vortex effects were noted in the data. Allen, Jerry M. and Watson, Carolyn B. Langley Research Center NASA-TM-4434, L-17148, NAS 1.15:4434 RTOP 505-59-30-01...

The distribution of camber for optimial loading of diamond planform wings and some low drag geometries for rectangular wings are determined. It appears that substantial drag reduction, through the use of spanwise distribution of camber, may be achieved only for low reduced aspect ratios, M2-1 AR. The distribution of lift throughout volumes of prescribed shape is considered and some optimum distributions found for certain cases. It is shown that optimum spatial distributions of lift arc generally not unique. The possibility of using biplanes is explored and it is concluded that for non-interfering biplanes (wings acting as isolated monoplanes) there is an inherent structural advantage which is the result of a scale effect for geometrically similar structures The preacnt status of means for drag reduction is surveyed and the direction for further study indicated.
