Book excerpt: The photoinjectors for future short wavelength high brightness accelerator driven light sources need to produce an electron beam with ultra-low emittance. At the DUVFEL facility at BNL, we studied the effect of longitudinally shaping the photocathode laser pulses on the electron beam dynamics. We report on measurements of the longitudinal phase space distributions and the time-resolved transverse beam parameters for both a Gaussian and a flat-top temporal laser pulse profile.

One method for improving brightness involves the careful shaping of the electron bunch to control the degrading effects of its space charge forces. We study this experimentally in an S-band system, by using an acousto-optical programmable dispersive filter to shape the photocathode laser pulse that drives the RF photoinjector. We report on the efficacy of shaping from the IR through the UV, and the effects of shaping on the electron beam dynamics.

Book excerpt: We present the results of electron beam longitudinal modulation studies in the DUV-FEL accelerator. For bunch length determination we used the 'zero-phasing' method, based on a measurement of the chirped electron bunch energy spectra. The measurements revealed a spiky structure in the longitudinal phase space [1]. A model based on space charge effect is considered [2] to explain of the obtained phenomena. The analysis of the energy spectra has shown a sensitivity of the structure to the electron beam peak current, energy and longitudinal non-uniformity of the RF gun drive laser. Analytical calculations have demonstrated a qualitative agreement with experimental observations. Several experiments have been made to compare with theory; measured results are reviewed in this paper. The obtained effect is briefly discussed in relation to high brightness accelerators.

In this dissertation, we report on the corresponding beam dy- namics research conducted at Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology facility (FAST) and Argonne Wakefield Accelerator (AWA). We demonstrate an experimental method for spatial laser and electron beam shaping using microlens arrays (MLAs) at a photoinjector facility. Such a setup was built at AWA and resulted in transverse emittance reduction by a factor of 2. We present transverse emittance partitioning methods that were recently employed at FAST facility. A strongly coupled electron beam was generated in an axial magnetic field and accelerated in 1.3 GHz SRF cavities to 34 MeV. It was then decoupled in Round-To-Flat beam transformer and beams with emittance asymmetry ratio of 100 were generated. We introduce the new methods of measuring electron beam canonical angular momentum, beam transformer optimization and beam image analysis. We also describe a potential longitudinal space-charge amplifier setup for FAST high-energy beamline. As an outcome, a broadband partially coherent radiation in the UV range could be generated.

Book excerpt: High brightness electron beams have revolutionized accelerator science and enabled a large range of high impact applications such as X-ray free electron lasers(XFEL), inverse Compton-scattering, plasma wakefield accelerators and future linear colliders. In pursue of higher beam brightness, collective effects become key limiting factors. Those collective effects happen during the beam generation, acceleration, compression and transport, including coherent synchrotron radiation, space charge and resistive wall wakefields. As people are entering the new parameter regime -- such as the generation of ultra-short electron bunches or ultra-high peak current -- collective effects can play a dominant role and classical theories of wakefield can break down. In this work we describe our efforts in understanding and controlling the collective dynamics of high-brightness electron beams. In the first half of the thesis, we focus on one of the most challenging beam dynamics problems in accelerator physics -- coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) and introduce a novel computational model of 2D/3D CSR in relativistic beams. The model achieves both accurate and efficient simulations of CSR in the regime that conventional 1D models become invalid, which can be crucial for the design of next generation accelerators. In the second half, we switch gear to techniques that enable better control of the collective effects. Specifically we examine laser shaping techniques both in spatial and temporal domains as a powerful beam manipulation tool. We first discuss in detail the numerical and experimental studies using Laguerre-Gaussian mode laser in the laser heater to improve the microbunching instability suppression in XFEL drivers. Then we introduce temporal laser shaping to achieve flexible longitudinal phase space manipulation and apply it as an active out-coupling method for cavity-based free-electron lasers.

Book excerpt: Experimental investigation of electron beam physics: naturally occurring and externally driven low frequency (6-500 KHz) diocotron oscillations are observed and the m = 1 rotating structure of these oscillations are measured by using electrostatic probes. Systematic analysis of the circuit system for the generation of a fast-rising pinching magnetic field: a circuit consisted of distributed circuit (transmission line) part and lumped circuit parts included a coil are systematically analyzed from the first principles of circuit. Computer code to calculate expediently the temporal profile of the pinching magnetic is developed. Theoretical study of acceleration of high-energy electron beams by a laser-light through net inverse bremsstrahlung in plasma fields: the absorption of the incident laser photons by net inverse bremsstrahlung can give rise to the dc ponderomotive force whose strength is far greater than the amplitude of the Lorentz force of the laser wave. Study of a soft x-ray free electron laser (FEL) scheme using a two-beam elliptical pill-box wake-field cavity: it is found that the scheme provides sufficient gain as a coherent radiation source down to the x-ray regime. Wake field acceleration research: the theoretical result from the modal analysis developed here agrees with the recent experiment in both profile (shape) and magnitude of the wake potential. Development of a laser photocathode for the generation of high-current short-length electron bunch, and Design and construction of a modified betatron: a modified betatron called the UTA Modified Betatron was constructed. However, high-energy particle accelerators tend to have sizes ranging from large buildings to small cities, which limits their utility. Dielectric Laser Accelerators (DLAs) use pulsed lasers to increase the "acceleration gradient" tenfold over conventional accelerators. This allows them to be made many times smaller, and to be nanofabricated at scale on silicon wafers. This dissertation will present the techniques developed for manipulation of electron beams in DLAs, including demonstrations of three key accelerator subunits: a laser-driven magnetic lens for beam confinement; a two-stage ballistic microbunching scheme; and a streak camera capable of attosecond resolution for beam diagnostics. By combining these subunits, a working prototype of a DLA-based injector is demonstrated for future on-chip high-energy beamlines. In the first chapter, the two-dimensional theory of DLA operation is derived in its full generality. Next, strong, laser-driven spatial focusing of an electron beam is demonstrated, sufficient to confine the electron beam within the DLA channel. Third, I investigate the manipulation of longitudinal beam structure by a ballistic microbunching scheme, and demonstrate attosecond-scale control over microbunch formation using a two-stage DLA. This allows demonstration of the net acceleration of a microbunched pulse train. Finally, by combining the two-stage longitudinal bunch manipulation techniques with the laser-driven DLA lens, I am able to demonstrate the creation and coherent acceleration of low energy spread microbunched pulse trains, which constitutes a fully functional prototype of a DLA injector.

Book excerpt: The design and construction of an optical transport that brings synchrotron radiation from electron bunches to a fast streak camera in a remote area has become a useful tool for online observation of bunch length and stability. This paper will report on the temporal measurements we have done, comparison with simulations, and the on-going work for another imaging optical transport system that will make possible the direct measurement of the longitudinal phase space by measuring the bunch length as a function of energy.

An example of sought-after shape is a linearly-ramped current profile that can be improve the transformer ratio in beam-driven acceleration, or produce energy-modulated pulse for, e.g., the subsequent generation of THz radiation. Typically, such a shaping is achieved by manipulating ultra-relativistic electron bunches. In this contribution we discuss the possibility of shaping the bunch via photoemission and demonstrate using particle-in-cell simulations the production of MeV electron bunches with quasi-ramped current profile.

Book excerpt: This thesis details the experimental studies leading to initial attempts to measure an interaction in free space between a short pulse of terahertz radiation (generated from a 40 fs, 800 nm titanium-sapphire (Ti:S) laser pulse) and bunches of medium-energy relativistic electrons within the ALICE accelerator. The work undertaken included optimization of the terahertz source itself, which is a large-area photoconductive antenna with high-voltage electrodes; the aim being to maximize the potential that can be applied before breakdown occurs. The key feature of such terahertz sources is the radially-polarized (TEM10-like) nature of the radiation generated. Further work included characterization of the temporal structure and transverse profile of the terahertz radiation pulse in the ALICE Diagnostics Room; duplication of this experimental arrangement inside the ALICE accelerator; modification of the operating parameters of ALICE to produce the most conductive situation for detecting an interaction. The final step was the installation of additional electron beam diagnostics and the experimental search for a definite interaction signal. The work described in this thesis is part of a project named ALICE Energy Modulation Induced by Terahertz Radiation, also known as AEMITR.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main goal of the book is to provide a systematic and didactic approach to the physics and technology of free-electron lasers. Numerous figures are used for illustrating the underlying ideas and concepts and links to other fields of physics are provided. After an introduction to undulator radiation and the low-gain FEL, the one-dimensional theory of the high-gain FEL is developed in a systematic way. Particular emphasis is put on explaining and justifying the various assumptions and approximations that are needed to obtain the differential and integral equations governing the FEL dynamics. Analytical and numerical solutions are presented and important FEL parameters are defined, such as gain length, FEL bandwidth and saturation power. One of the most important features of a high-gain FEL, the formation of microbunches, is studied at length. The increase of gain length due to beam energy spread, space charge forces, and three-dimensional effects such as betatron oscillations and optical diffraction is analyzed. The mechanism of Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission is described theoretically and illustrated with numerous experimental results. Various methods of FEL seeding by coherent external radiation are introduced, together with experimental results. The world’s first soft X-ray FEL, the user facility FLASH at DESY, is described in some detail to give an impression of the complexity of such an accelerator-based light source. The last chapter is devoted to the new hard X-ray FELs which generate extremely intense radiation in the Angstrøm regime. The appendices contain supplementary material and more involved calculations.
