Book Synopsis The Effect of Initial Integral Scale on the Mixing of Passive Scalar in Grid-generated Turbulence by : Oleg O. Goushcha

This book was released on 2010 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study is focused on the effect of variation of the size of the large scale structure on the mixing of a passive scalar in nearly homogeneous grid-generated turbulence. A passive scalar is introduced into the flow by means of a grid consisting of closely separated horizontal wires. A set of ten wires is heated by means of an electrical current passed thorough the wires. A temperature change of about 0.7° C is observed just downstream of the wires, which is low enough so the heated fluid can be considered a passive scalar. The mean velocity is held constant at about 6m/s. Free-stream turbulence is produced by means of biplane grids with a mesh size, Mu=2.54cm, 5.08cm, and 10.16cm which leads to corresponding grid Reynolds numbers of 8401, 16802, and 33605, respectively. It is found that the normalized mean temperature plotted as a function of the vertical distance from the centerplane normalized by the half wake width are nearly similar in shape far downstream of the wire grid. The profiles of the normalized root mean square temperature, normalized temperature skewness and kurtosis plotted as a function of the vertical distance from the centerplane normalized by the half wake width are not similar even far downstream of the wire gird for all grids. At moderate distances downstream of the wire grid (for example x/Mu=10 for Mu=2.45cm), the Probability Density Functions show the presence of ambient temperature fluid on the centerplane far downstream of the wire-grid. This can occur when the thermal wake produced by the wire grid "flaps", i.e. the heated wake moves vertically with time without significant mixing.

Book Synopsis Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Experiments - 4 by : D. Laurence
Download or read book Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Experiments - 4 written by D. Laurence and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-04-14 with total page 975 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings contain the papers presented at the 4th International Symposium on Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Measurements held at Ajaccio, Corsica, France from 24-26 May 1999. It follows three previous conferences on the topic of engineering turbulence modelling and measurements. The purpose of this series of symposia is to provide a forum for presenting and discussing new developments in the area of turbulence modelling and measurements, with particular emphasis on engineering-related problems. Turbulence is still one of the key issues in tackling engineering flow problems. As powerful computers and accurate numerical methods are now available for solving the flow equations, and since engineering applications nearly always involve turbulence effects, the reliability of CFD analysis depends more and more on the performance of the turbulence models. Successful simulation of turbulence requires the understanding of the complex physical phenomena involved and suitable models for describing the turbulent momentum, heat and mass transfer. For the understanding of turbulence phenomena, experiments are indispensable, but they are equally important for providing data for the development and testing of turbulence models and hence for CFD software validation.

Book Synopsis Turbulent Shear Flows 5 by : Franz Durst
Download or read book Turbulent Shear Flows 5 written by Franz Durst and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first four symposia in the series on turbulent shear flows have been held alternately in the United States and Europe with the first and third being held at universities in eastern and western States, respectively. Continuing this pattern, the Fifth Symposium on Turbulent Shear Flows was held at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, in August 1985. The meeting brought together more than 250 participants from around the world to present the results of new research on turbulent shear flows. It also provided a forum for lively discussions on the implications (practical or academic) of some of the papers. Nearly 100 formal papers and about 20 shorter communications in open forums were presented. In all the areas covered, the meeting helped to underline the vitality of current research into turbulent shear flows whether in experimental, theoretical or numerical studies. The present volume contains 25 of the original symposium presentations. All have been further reviewed and edited and several have been considerably extended since their first presentation. The editors believe that the selection provides papers of archival value that, at the same time, give a representative statement of current research in the four areas covered by this book: - Homogeneous and Simple Flows - Free Flows - Wall Flows - Reacting Flows Each of these sections begins with an introductory article by a distinguished worker in the field.

Download or read book Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Experiments - 2 written by F. Martelli and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 1012 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today understanding turbulence is one of the key issues in tackling flow problems in engineering. Powerful computers and numerical methods are now available for solving flow equations, but the simulation of turbulence effects, which are nearly always important in practice, are still at an early stage of development. Successful simulation of turbulence requires the understanding of the complex physical phenomena involved and suitable models for describing the turbulence momentum, heat and mass transfer. The 89 papers, including 5 invited papers, in this volume present and discuss new developments in the area of turbulence modelling and measurements, with particular emphasis on engineering-related problems. The high standard of the contributions on the developing and testing of turbulent models attests to the world-wide interest this domain is currently attracting from researchers.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The General Assembly of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in its meeting on August 28, 1994, selected for 1996 only four Mechanics Symposia, of which ours is the only one related to Fluid Mechanics: Variable Density Low Speed Turbulent Flows. This IUTAM Symposium, organized by the Institut de Recherche sur les Phenomenes Hors Equilibre (Marseille), is the logical continuation of the meetings previously organized or co-organized - on the French or European level, such as Euromech 237, Marseille, 1988 - by the same research group ofMarseille. This meeting focused specifically on the structure of turbulent flows in which density varies strongly : the effect of this variation on the velocity and scalar fields is in no sense negligible. We were mainly concerned with low-speed flows subjected to strong local changes of density as a consequence of heat or mass transfer or of chemical reactions. Compressible turbulent flows - such a!" supersonic ones - were also considered in order to underline their similarities to and their differences from low-speed variable density flows.
