Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the unique properties of superfluid phases of 3He, the condensed matter with the outmost broken symmetry, which combine in a surprising way the properties of ordered magnets, liquid crystals and superfluids. The complicated vacuum state of these phases with a large number of fermionic and bosonic quasiparticles and topological objects remains the vacuum in modern quantum field theories. Some of the objects and physical phenomena in 3He have strong analogy with the neutrino, W-bosons, weak interactions, gravity, chiral anomaly, Quantum Hall Effect and fractional statistics. As an example of topological objects, the quantized vortices in 3He phases are discussed in detail, including singular and continuous vortices, half-quantum vortices, broken symmetry in the vortex core and phase transitions between the vortex states with different symmetry and topology.

Book excerpt: Recently, analogies between laboratory physics (e.g. quantum optics and condensed matter) and gravitational/cosmological phenomena such as black holes have attracted an increasing interest. This book contains a series of selected lectures devoted to this new and rapidly developing field. Various analogies connecting (apparently) different areas in physics are presented in order to bridge the gap between them and to provide an alternative point of view.

Book excerpt: Introducing the subject of superfluid helium three and polarized liquid helium three, this book is devoted to modern problems in many body physics specific to the quantum fluid helium three. Relationships between properties of helium three and topics in other fields are established including superconductivity, non-linear dynamics, acoustics, and magnetically polarized quantum systems. Among the chapters in this collection one finds valuable reference material and original research not published elsewhere. Advanced research topics are presented in a pedagogical manner, in considerable depth, and with appropriate introductory material sufficiently general to be suitable to the non-specialist.

Book excerpt: As the growing number of conference proceedings, preprints, periodicals and popular journal articles are being joined by various electronic forms of dissemination of research, the series Progress in Low Temperature Physics assumes a particular responsibility in providing excellent reviews, guiding the reading of the literature and providing direction for future research possibilities. In this most recent volume, the main theme is research on superfluid and adsorbed phases of helium. In five chapters the following topics are dealt with. Chapter one is a review of one of the essential characteristics of superfluid 4He, the Landau critical velocity. Chapter two reviews the amazing properties of coherent spin dynamics in superfluid 3He. The next chapter examines a unique situation with a number of thermodynamic transitions between superfluid states and discusses the current experimental and theoretical situation. Properties of phases of 3He adsorbed on graphite are discussed in the following chapter, and in a complementary final chapter a review is presented on the properties of multilayer 3He-4He mixture films.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Properties of superfluid 3 He are greatly affected by proximity of surfaces and disorder. In this work, we describe three different experiments for which we use torsion pendulums to study the properties of the 3 He fluid confined within the torsion pendulum heads. In the first two experiments, the fluid was embedded within anisotropic aerogel samples. In one case, we compressed an otherwise isotropic 98% open silica aerogel. In the other, we used a highly oriented, "nematically ordered" aerogel sample, which represented the limit of extremely stretched aerogel. In the third experiment, 3 He was confined within a nanofabricated high aspect ration 1080 nm deep cavity formed between patterned silicon disc bonded to a matching glass piece. We obtained data for the superfluid fraction versus temperature for a number of pressures. We observe great modifications of the superfluid phase diagram for the confined fluid in all three experiments. The order parameters for the A and B phases are distorted and the regions of stability for these phases is drastically different compared to the bulk or previous experiments with isotropic aerogels. In particular, the highly anisotropic disorder provided by the "nematically ordered" aerogel sample gives rise to a phase transition not seen in the bulk. We argue that at low pressures in the temperature region near the superfluid transition we observe a superfluid state that is closely related to Polar phase. In the experiment in which we confined the fluid within the 1080 nm deep cavity, we see an A to B phase transition at all experimental pressures. We, however, do not observe any signature of a new superfluid state (Stripe phase), which has been predicted to occur at the onset of the A to B transition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At least 10 years have elapsed since a comprehensive monograph concer ned with the broad subject of cryogenics has been published. During this time a considerable quantity of research and development has been carried out in the field of cryogenics. Furthermore, there has been a certain degree of redirection of effort within the field, mostly driven by the variety of new applications, ranging from superconductive magnet systems to micro electronics. Greater emphasis is now being placed on low-temperature cryogenics, particularly that of liquid helium. Until now cryogenic books have provided a broad survey of materials and fluid properties over the entire cryogenic regime, T ::5 150 K. This approach does not allow sufficient detail in any particular area to bring the reader to the current level of understanding in the subject. In addition, the behavior of helium has been lumped with that of other cryogenic fluids, although the properties of helium are quite unique. As a result, a clear relationship has not been established between the fundamental understanding of helium fluids and their potential applications. The present book has been written to fill this void. The approach is to survey the field of cryogenics, specifically as it pertains to helium fluids. This approach is more specialized than that contained in previous cryogenics books. Furthermore, the level of treatment is more advanced and a certain knowledge of fundamental engineering and physics principles has been assumed.

Book excerpt: This thesis encompasses a broad study of the properties of the 'dirty' Fermi liquid and superfluid state of 3He in aerogel. The sound attenuation in the first and zero sound regime was determined with longitudinal acoustics, and the transition between the two is found to be completely obscured in aerogel by strong elastic scattering. The (P,T,B) phase diagram of the superfluid phases of 3He in 98% aerogel was determined in the range of pressure from 15 to 33 bars and up to 3 kG using high-frequency sound. The first-order transition between the A and B-phases is suppressed by a magnetic field. We show that the equilibrium phase in zero applied field is the B-phase with at most a region of A-phase ∼20 muK just below Tca at a pressure of 33.4 bars. The quadratic coefficient for magnetic field suppression of the AB-transition, ga(beta), was obtained. The pressure dependence of ga(beta) is markedly different from that for the pure superfluid, g0(beta), which diverges at a polycritical pressure (PCP) of 21 bars. We compare our results with calculations from the homogeneous scattering model for ga(beta), and find qualitatively good agreement with the experiment if the strong-coupling corrections are rescaled from known values of the beta's for pure 3He. The calculations show that the PCP in the aerogel is displaced above melting pressure and out of experimental reach for a mean free path of ∼150 nm. The nucleation of the aerogel B-phase is also studied. Primary supercooling is observed over a wide range of pressures and fields, but secondary nucleation shows no memory effect. At the interface between the pure and dirty superfluids, we find that the proximity effect is insufficient to nucleate the B-phase in either superfluid. We suggest an explanation in terms of decoherence of the order parameter on the length scale of the critical radius for nucleation.
