Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of Experimental Mechanics has evolved substantially over the past 100 years. In the early years, the field was primarily comprised of applied physicists, civil engineers, railroad engineers, and mechanical engineers. The field defined itself by those who invented, developed, and refined experimental tools and techniques, based on the latest technologies available, to better understand the fundamental mechanics of materials and structures used to design many aspects of our everyday life. What the early experimental mechanician measured, observed, and evaluated were things like stress, strain, fracture, and fatigue, to name a few, which remain fundamental to the field today. This book guides you through a chronology of the formation of the Society for Experimental Mechanics, and its ensuing evolution. The Society was founded in 1935 by a very small group of individuals that understood the value of creating a common forum for people working in the field of Applied Mechanics of Solids, where extensive theoretical developments needed the input of experimental validation. A community of individuals who—through research, applications, sharp discussion of ideas—could fulfill the needs of a nation rapidly evolving in the technological field. The founders defined, influenced, and grew the field of what we now call Experimental Mechanics. Written as a narrative, the author describes, based on input from numerous individuals and personal experiences, the evolution of the New England Photoelasticity Conference to what we know today as the Society for Experimental Mechanics (SEM). The narrative is the author's perspective that invites members of the Society to contribute to the story by adding names of individuals, institutions, and technologies that have defined the Society over the past 75 years. Many of the key individuals who greatly influenced the advancement of the field of Experimental Mechanics are mentioned. These individuals are, in many ways, the founders of the field who have written textbooks, brought their teaching leadership and experiences to the classroom, worked on the Apollo project, and invented testing, evaluation, and measurement equipment that have shaped the fields of engineering. SEM's international membership is highly represented by those in academia, as you will read, although there has always been a powerful balance and contribution from industry and research organizations across the globe. The role of the experimental mechanician is defined, in many ways, through the individual legacies shared in the following pages....legacies that define the past and create the foundation for what is now and what is to come.
Book Synopsis Experimental Mechanics by : B. E. Rossi
Download or read book Experimental Mechanics written by B. E. Rossi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental Mechanics presents the proceedings of the First International Congress on Experimental Mechanics, held at the Hotel New Yorker in New York City, on November 1–3, 1961. This book presents the application of the methods of experimental mechanics to technical problems. Organized into 21 chapters, this compilation of papers begins with an overview of the experimental techniques developed for different basic and applied research on strength of materials, performance of hydraulic machinery, and accuracy of mechanisms and machine tools. This text then surveys the developments in the field of mechanical measurements, including rubber gage, bolt gage, digital strain indicators, and waterproofed strain gage. Other chapters consider the experimental study of the transient response of a rocket sled with a vertically malaligned center of gravity. The final chapter deals with the conditions of collapse of stiffened cylindrical shells beyond the proportional limit of the material. Experimental stress analysts will find this book useful.

Book Synopsis Experimental Mechanics of Solids by : Cesar A. Sciammarella
Download or read book Experimental Mechanics of Solids written by Cesar A. Sciammarella and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-03-26 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental solid mechanics is the study of materials to determine their physical properties. This study might include performing a stress analysis or measuring the extent of displacement, shape, strain and stress which a material suffers under controlled conditions. In the last few years there have been remarkable developments in experimental techniques that measure shape, displacement and strains and these sorts of experiments are increasingly conducted using computational techniques. Experimental Mechanics of Solids is a comprehensive introduction to the topics, technologies and methods of experimental mechanics of solids. It begins by establishing the fundamentals of continuum mechanics, explaining key areas such as the equations used, stresses and strains, and two and three dimensional problems. Having laid down the foundations of the topic, the book then moves on to look at specific techniques and technologies with emphasis on the most recent developments such as optics and image processing. Most of the current computational methods, as well as practical ones, are included to ensure that the book provides information essential to the reader in practical or research applications. Key features: Presents widely used and accepted methodologies that are based on research and development work of the lead author Systematically works through the topics and theories of experimental mechanics including detailed treatments of the Moire, Speckle and holographic optical methods Includes illustrations and diagrams to illuminate the topic clearly for the reader Provides a comprehensive introduction to the topic, and also acts as a quick reference guide This comprehensive book forms an invaluable resource for graduate students and is also a point of reference for researchers and practitioners in structural and materials engineering.

Download or read book Elementary Experimental Mechanics (Classic Reprint) written by A. Wilmer Duff and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Experimental Mechanics In this book an attempt is made to combine theory and practice as closely as possible. Success in teaching is in proportion to the extent to which the active initiative of the student is aroused, and nothing is so effective in this respect as laboratory work, if it be of the right kind. The use of the hand and the eye affords an invaluable stimulus to the imagination and the reason. Without such personal work the interest awakened by a good lecture is apt to be superficial and temporary, and the preparation insured by recitations is too often reluctant and unfruitful. Mechanics is the most fundamental and least attractive part of physics, and in the teaching of it lectures and recitations need all of the aid that laboratory work can supply. A grasp of principles is of more value to the average student than skill in measurement. While the exercises in this book have been chosen chiefly with a view to the elucidation of principles, the need of an adequate degree of precision in the necessary measurements has been kept in mind. In most cases a test of the accuracy of the work is supplied by a comparison of the results of theory and experiment. The course is not a substitute for, but is preliminary to, a course in the more precise measurement of physical constants.
