This research investigates the use of surface tension forces to improve current oil-water separation technologies. An understanding of oil-water flows in surface tension driven mini-channels is necessary. This work investigates the effects of mini-channel wall material and tube diameter, along with oil viscosity, on flow regimes and pressure drops in mini-channel oil-water flows. A horizontal closed-loop, adiabatic experimental apparatus was constructed and validated using single-phase water. 2.1-mm and 3.7-mm borosilicate glass, 3.7-mm stainless steel and 4.0-mm Inconel tubes, resulting in Eötvös numbers of 0.2, 0.6 and 0.7 were tested. The experimental data were analyzed and compared using two mineral oils (i.e., Parol 70 and 100) with densities of 840 kg/m3 for both and viscosities of 11.7 and 20.8 mPa-s, respectively. Experiments included a wide range of oil superficial velocities (e.g., 0.28-6.82 m/s for glass, 0.28-2.80 m/s for stainless steel and 0.21-2.89 for Inconel) and water superficial velocities (e.g., 0.07-6.77 for glass, 0.07-4.20 m/s for stainless steel and 0.06-3.86 m/s). Flow regimes were observed and classified as stratified, annular, intermittent, and dispersed flow regimes. Effects of tube diameter were observed. For example, the 2.1-mm glass tube had the smaller range of stratified flows and the larger range of annular and intermittent flows compared to the 3.7-mm glass tube. At the same oil and water superficial velocities and relatively the same flow regime, stainless steel and Inconel always displayed higher pressure drop than the glass tube. However, pressure drops were a strong function of flow regime; lowest pressure drops were found for annular flows and highest pressure drops for dispersed flows. Flow regime maps and pressure drop graphs were created. Overall effects of oil viscosity were modest; however, an increase in oil viscosity enhanced flow stability which affected flow regime transition points.

Book excerpt: The oil and gas industry relies on multiphase flow models and correlations to predict the behavior of fluids through wells and pipelines. Significant amount of research has been performed on the multiphase flow of different types of liquids with gases to extend the applicability of existing models to field-specific fluid conditions. Heavy oil and gas flow research commenced in the past decade and new correlations have been developed that define their flow behavior/regimes. This study aims to plant a foot in the quite deficient area of multiphase flow research that focuses on a sufficiently common situation faced by many heavy oil producing fields: the presence of sand in wells and pipelines. This study will be the first recorded attempt to understand the multiphase flow of heavy oil, gas, and sand. A 1.5" diameter multiphase flow loop facility capable of handling solids was designed and constructed for the study. Data logging instruments were calibrated and installed to be able to withstand the erosive effects of sand. The flow loop was leak and pressure tested with water and air. Three oils of 150, 196 and 218 cP viscosities were utilized to gather 49 single phase liquid, 227 two-phase liquid- air and 87 three-phase liquid, air and solid multiphase flow data points which included differential and absolute pressures, fluid flow rates, temperatures, liquid and composite liquid- solid hold- up data and photo and videotaping of the observed flow regimes. Validation of the setup was performed using single phase flow of oil and two-phase flow of oil and air. Sand was added in three different concentrations to the 218 cP oil and three-phase oil, gas and sand multiphase flow tests were performed. Flow patterns were identified and flow pattern maps were created using acquired data. No change was observed on flow pattern transitions by changing oil viscosities. Liquid hold- up and differential pressures were compared to observe the effect of changing oil viscosity and the presence of sand in varying concentrations on the two-phase flow of oil and gas and the three-phase flow of oil, gas and sand respectively. An increase in differential pressures was observed with increasing viscosities and the addition of sand. No changes in hold-up were seen with changing oil viscosities rather flow patterns impacted liquid hold-up significantly. The slug flow pattern was analyzed. Composite liquid-solid hold-up in slug flow were physically measured and predicted. Liquid slug lengths were predicted and compared with observed lengths using photo and videography techniques. Differential pressures and liquid hold-up were compared with existing multiphase flow models in the PIPESIM multiphase flow simulator to test model predictions against observed flow data. The dependence of differential pressure gradients and liquid hold-up on dimensionless variables was realized by performing normalized linear regressions to identify the most significant dimensionless groups and the results were given a mathematical form by proposing correlations for differential pressure and hold-up predictions. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first attempt at systematically measuring pressure drop and liquid hold up during the three-phase flow of oil, gas and sand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viscous fingering is an unstable flow phenomenon between two fluids with different viscosities, and it is widely found in many kinds of viscous displacements in nature, such as the flow of rainwater or contaminants through soil and flow of oil or natural gas through reservoirs. In petroleum industry, viscous fingering will be encountered frequently during waterflooding or chemical flooding in heavy oil production. Because of the exist of viscous fingering, the breakthrough time is shorted significantly, which causes oil and natural gas production decreases significantly. Many researches have been conducted to further study the mechanism of viscous fingering. Hele-Shaw model, sand-pack model, 3D model and micromodel are the four commonmodel used in this area. Most researchers prefer experimental study about linear displacement using sand-pack model and micromodel with low viscosity oil, while a few scientists prefer to simulater radial displacement using small scale micromodel such as one quarter of five spots model. Considering the flow patterns near wells, larger scale and range of oil viscosity, experiments about radial heavy oil displacement with large scale sand-pack model are needed. In this experimental study, seven groups of experiment are carried out: (1) using sand-pack model to learn the flow pattern of radial flow and compare with linear model and a quarter five spots model; (2) using sand-pack model to study the impact of injection rates of displacing water and viscosity of displaced oil under room temperature and pressure. Four kinds of oil samples with different viscosity (853.9cp, 2946cp, 8082cp, 32080cp) are chosen and the injection rate of displacing fluid varies from 0.01cc/min to 0.5cc/min (0.01cc/min, 0.05cc/min, 0.1cc/min and 0.5cc/min). The results of the experiment illustrate that the flow pattern of viscous fingering in the radial model can be divided into three stages: rapid fingering generation and growth, fingering combination and approximately stable displacement. During the process of displacement, there are also two types of fingering combinations: bottom to top combination and surrounding combination. Surrounding combination also can be divided into the incomplete and complete surrounding combination. The main reason for different flow patterns in the different experiments is discussed. In addition, the effect of injection rate and viscosity is analyzed based on experimental study. The conclusion is that both of injection rate and viscosity can influence the generation and growth of viscous fingering. However, for a specific regression equation between viscosity or injection rate with viscous fingering, more groups of the experiment are needed.
